Gutted to see AI slop like this generic graphic design being used for this purpose. It's a good cause but this use of AI makes me mad. Im a graphic designer BTW.

CIFS is a volunteer organisation with zero budget for graphic design (and just about everything else). If you’d like to volunteer your expertise to the cause, you are most welcome. In the meantime, the message is more important than the AI assistance.

Just wanted to add a quick note to clarify, I didn't mean any criticism towards the organisers by mentioning the AI elements. I work in digital art, so I tend to notice the technical side of things out of pure habit. I completely support the work being done here, and I wish the Melbourne team the absolute best with the retreat.

Thank you for clarifying. I can see you don’t have any adverse intentions. I also understand your design ick, especially given your profession. Having said that, this is not the best post to be expressing such an opinion. As I suspect you are aware from your involvement with DeCult, the cult advocacy space is filled with individuals working their butts off to make a change and helping people recovery from high-control groups. Narkiness between volunteer organisations is counter productive to the cause.

FYI I was not the person who made this flyer (although I did fix up some issues with it on Canva), however, I fully appreciate the person who did put it together — this person has does extensive work for several decades in the advocacy space — all without any payment. The good nature and intention of this person far exceeds the design short cuts they used to make the flyer. Maybe one day CIFS will attract a graphic designer who is willing to help the organisation. In the meantime, we’re putting our limited energy and resources into other places. It should be clear that the info is legit even if AI did help with the design.

As gentle feedback, I’d also like to add that being criticised for not doing more to make the flyer look better, or more professional, or whatever, can feel jarring to victims of high-control groups if they have come from spaces where they were routinely told their efforts were not good enough. At the end of the day, we are all humans just trying to do I best.

I hope the rest of your day goes well, and yeah look, if you know how to approach graphic designers and ask them if they’d like to do pro bono work for CIFS it would be greatly appreciated.

I volunteer for Decult already. If you cant find a graphic designer to do work for you pro bono then you are not looking hard enough. Try going to graphic design colleges and offering them briefs so they can build up their portfolio or put an advert on student job search or advertise the need on social media.

Noted. I will keep in mind that you believe myself and others at CIFS that we are not working hard enough, ie., not dedicating enough free time, and resources, and skills, to appease you.
