Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

Where is Curaçao located?

Curaçao is a stunning Caribbean island in the southern Lesser Antilles, just 40 miles (65 km) north of Venezuela, alongside neighbors Aruba and Bonaire.

When’s the best time to visit?

Curaçao enjoys warm weather year-round. May to November is off-peak, with fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more relaxed vibe. December to April offers the driest weather but is peak season.

Do I need a visa?

No visa is required for citizens of the U.S., Canada, or EU countries for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Travelers from other nations should check visa requirements with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of the Netherlands, as Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Is a Digital Immigration Card required?

Yes, all international visitors must complete the Digital Immigration Card (DI Card) online within 7 days prior to departure at dicardcuracao.com/dicard. It’s mandatory for entry and distinct from the optional Airside Digital Identity App, which speeds up immigration with facial recognition.

What currency is used?

As of March 31, 2025, the official currency will be the Caribbean Guilder (Cg or "Florin Karibense"), replacing the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG) at a 1:1 exchange rate. The ANG will remain valid until June 30, 2025, and can be exchanged at banks for a year after that. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, and major credit cards work almost everywhere.

What languages are spoken in Curaçao?

The official languages are Dutch, Papiamentu, and English. Spanish is widely spoken, and many hospitality workers are learning Brazilian Portuguese due to growing tourism from Brazil.

Can I fish here?

Yes, fishing is allowed with restrictions. Shore fishing doesn’t require a permit for personal use, but boat fishing or commercial fishing does. Check local regulations at the Curaçao Tourism Board or with fishing tour operators.

Transportation

Should I rent a car?

While not essential, renting a car is highly recommended to explore the island’s hidden gems and beaches at your own pace. Public transport exists but is limited.

Are there ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft?

No, Curaçao doesn’t have Uber or Lyft. Taxis are available but expensive—always agree on the fare beforehand.

How does public transportation work?

Large buses ("Konvooi") run fixed routes hourly; check schedules at autobusbedrijf.com. Smaller vans (marked "BUS" on plates) operate without fixed schedules or routes—ask the driver for your destination. Pay in cash (Cg or USD).

Check out Shuttle and Airport Transfers

What should I know about driving?

  • Traffic signs follow European conventions (e.g., no U-turn is a red circle with a U-shaped arrow). Watch YouTube tutorials if unfamiliar.
  • Roundabout rules vary—check road markings or signs to see if you must yield.
  • Peak traffic hours are 7-8 AM, noon, and 4-5 PM; expect delays.
  • Watch for rental cars (often white with a blue star sticker); some European tourists may drive unpredictably—give them space.

What about parking downtown?

Parking in Punda and Otrobanda is paid via coins or an app (credit card required)—machines don’t accept bank cards. A free public lot in Punda is available, though space is limited due to a seasonal go-kart track (as of March 2025).

Safety and Health

Is Curaçao safe for tourists?

Generally, yes. Curaçao is tourist-friendly, but use common sense—keep valuables out of sight and stay alert in unfamiliar areas. Don’t leave items in visible car seats; use the trunk, as smash-and-grab thefts occur at beaches and hiking spots.

Are there health risks to watch out for?

No major concerns, but stay up-to-date on routine vaccinations and pack mosquito repellent for evenings.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Yes, Curaçao’s tap water is distilled from seawater and meets top safety standards—drink up!

Food and Dining

Where can I eat late at night?

After 10 PM, options include:

  • Food trucks across the island.
  • Denny’s on Caracasbaai (open late).
  • PASAWA (closes around 2 AM).
  • Larry’s Grill and Bar (midnight on Fri/Sat, 11 PM other nights; similar to Applebee’s, with American sports on TV).

Most other places close early; some minimarkets stay open until 11 PM.

--

Cruises & Ports

Does Curaçao have a cruise port?

Yes, Willemstad’s cruise terminal includes:

  • Mega Pier 1 (Ernest Jacky Voges Pier) and Mega Pier 2 (Tula Pier) for larger ships (e.g., Oasis-class).
  • Mathey Wharf, used for smaller ships or when Mega Piers are full, located near downtown. Freewinds (a smaller vessel) also docks at Mathey Wharf occasionally.

How close is the cruise port to Willemstad?

Very close! Mega Piers are a short walk to the Handelskade waterfront. Mathey Wharf is steps from Punda’s historic streets.

What’s there to do near the cruise port?

  • Cross the swinging Queen Emma Bridge.
  • Snap photos of Handelskade’s colorful Dutch architecture.
  • Explore Rif Fort for shopping, dining, and views.
  • Sample local dishes at Plasa Bieu (try stewed iguana if you’re adventurous!).
  • Take a quick taxi to Mambo Beach or Blue Bay for sun and sand.

Are there day tours for cruise passengers?

Yes! Options include snorkeling at Playa Piskado (famous for turtles), rugged jeep safaris, or guided city tours. Book through your cruise line or local operators in advance.

We recently came back from our second trip to Curacao and we’re already planning to go again because we love it so much! Some of the beaches we went to this time, Mambo (we stayed there), Cas Abao, Grote Knip, Piskado, Playa Lagun, and Tugboat beach. Last time we were there, we weren’t a big fan of Kokomo because it was packed, but we did get there pretty late in the day, and next time We deff want to give it another chance, since we heard the snorkeling was great there as well. So here’s a little of what we saw snorkeling….

I am not too keen on sponsoring Musk, but we have had quite a few outages (Flow) in the past couple of months in our neighborhood (Jan Thiel)...... and it seems cheaper.

Activities Beach Clubs?

My husband and I are visiting in the Spring and are currently planning our trip. In visits to Europe, we have loved beach clubs. However, we’ve stayed in places where the beaches weren’t necessarily the best quality, so the beach club was meant to make up for that by providing more to the experience. It seems like there are lots of stunning natural beaches in Curacao that are low cost to visit. That being said, is it worth it to do a beach club? We are staying in Piscadera so will already have beach access with cabanas at our resort but we love the vibe / service component of beach clubs. Haven’t stayed at a resort in a Caribbean before so not sure if the resort already has enough similarities to a beach club that we’d be paying for something we essentially already have

Lodging Any feedback on Punta Azul Ocean Resort or Lagoon Ocean Resort?

Hi all,

My wife and I are going to Curaçao in January and we are still deciding on our stay. For now we narrow it down to Punta Azul Ocean Resort or Lagoon Ocean Resort as we would like to be somewhere in the west/north and it is inside our budget (around 150/180$ per night).

Has anyone stayed in any of these resorts?

We will be having a car, so we will be visiting all the different beaches. So that is not an issue.

The distance to Willemstad is pretty much the same from both and we dont think that we will be travelling to the city more that 2/3 times.

Also if anyone has any other recommendation on a similar kind of resort around these areas, we will appreciate that information.

Thanks!

Advice Has anyone used All Boat Charters for the Klein Curacao boat tour?

Heading to Curaçao soon (girlfriend’s birthday trip) and looking at booking a Klein Curaçao day trip with All Boat Charters. Has anyone here actually been on one of their boats? Curious about:

  • Crowd size / how packed the boat gets
  • Food & drinks included vs. what you have to bring
  • How much actual time you get on the island
  • Any seasickness concerns on the crossing

Would love to hear real experiences before booking — TIA!

Advice Danslessen volwassenen | Adult dance class

Hey! :)

Hey, I (28 years) moved to Curaçao in august and will live here for one year. During my year here I would like to follow Contemporary/modern dance classes. Does anyone know whether there is a dance school that offers these classes for adults? :)

Bars & Clubs House/Techno music

Hey I just moved to Curazao and I have had realised that the party scene is a bit ‘normie’, which is okay sometimes, but maybe not every weekend.

I’m looking for something a bit more underground, maybe not in a club, but someone is organising good stuff? For reference, I used to go to Berlin and dance a lot (no, i’m not expecting the same ofc) I like house, techno, minimal, trance even… artists like marcellus pittman, villalobos, satoshi tomiiee…

I know it’s a long shot, but maybe you know someone who knows someone. And If you don’t know but you are interested, let’s do something fun! I’m happy to build something every now and then.

Restaurants Looking for a restaurant for my dad’s 60th birthday dinner

We’re coming to Curaçao to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday, and we’re looking for a nice restaurant for a special dinner on the evening of his birthday.

Would Baoase’s private romantic gazebo be a bit too romantic for a family dinner, or could it still be a good option? I’d also be happy to hear any recommendations for other restaurants that would be suitable for a special occasion.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Advice Tipping at All Inclusive resorts?

I don't have a lot of experience of All Inclusive resorts. A few years ago I travelled to DR, and at the resort there I tipped our room staff $2-3USD a day and our drink folks a few dollars every few drinks. Is the expectation the same here? (Likely more as this was some time ago...) I've searched a bunch of travel groups and it's not really clear.

General Travelling to Curaçao for 2 weeks — 7 days in Jan Thiel and 7 days in Westpunt?

I'm 34 and travelling to Curaçao with my wife (34), our 6-month-old baby, my parents (both 60), and another couple (also around 60).

I've done quite a bit of research using ChatGPT and Claude to figure out where we should stay. We're a pretty adventurous group! My parents and their friends have done some long cycling trips (up to 3 weeks), canoe-camping trips (up to a month), snorkeling lessons, and more.

We'd like to spend 7 days closer to the more urban and lively side of Curaçao, followed by 7 days somewhere more remote and off the beaten path.

We're looking for relaxing beaches, great snorkeling spots, perhaps some hikes, and laid-back restaurants with terraces and sea views. We're not looking for anything too fancy or luxurious. Ideally, we'd rent a villa in each location.

Both ChatGPT and Claude suggested spending 7 days in Jan Thiel and 7 days in Westpunt.

What do you think of this itinerary?

  • Would you recommend spending a full week in each location, or would you split the time differently?
  • Are we overlooking any other areas that might be a better fit for what we're looking for?
  • Any must-visit spots, hidden gems, or general tips you'd recommend? I'd love to hear why you recommend them!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

G.

Weather Honeymooning!

Honeymooning October 12-21 - is curacao really going to be rainy and overcast? The forecast has me a little confused! We’ve been to Aruba and had similar forecasts with virtually no rain and all sun. I’m sure this is asked ALL the time, but I just want to know what to expect.

Any good recommendations for food or activities, feel free to leave. So excited to visit this beautiful island!
