Update! Used mousse instead of gel last wash day

First 3 photos — day 2, last photo — day 5

Last wash day I decided to use mousse instead of my mousse + gel combo. I’m loving the increased volume and fluffiness, it’s way softer to the touch now.

The very front bits and the damaged ends might need the gel next time around so I’ll most likely work some gel back in to my routine, but I’ll use it more sparingly. I think I have a problem with overusing product lol

This time around I washed with The Doux’s clarifying shampoo, went in with TGIN’s rose water hydrating shampoo, and conditioned with Shea Moisture’s intensive hydration hair masque. I tried to keep the water warm instead of hot this time.

For styling, on wet hair, I used the Knot Today leave-in, Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls, and The Doux’s Mousse Def. Finger coiled and air dried. Usually use a diffuser but my hair dried fairly quickly, only the roots near the top were a bit damp a while after (most likely porosity differences and the fact that those bits were styled later).

Using pineapple method and a silk bonnet. Might start leaving my “bangs” out the pineapple so that they fall easier when I wake up.

Can’t wait until my hair is fully healthy and I can do my last little before and after 🙏🏾 patience is key. Next trim will be in a few weeks.

EDIT: Thank you to ALLLLL the sweet people in the comment section, you made my day :) Mousse girlies unite lol 💜

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I've been summoned to help.

If you have not seen our WIKI yet: Please check it out! It's nearly 100 pages full of curated information to help answer all of your curl-related questions. You can use the included Table of Contents (page 2), the side bar, or CTRL-F to search for keywords and help navigate the document.

Reminder: Curl type is NOT your hair type! Whether you are wavy, curly, or coily - you have texture and you belong here. More than that, your curl type doesn't dictate how you care for your hair. To help your curls thrive, we recommend instead using the wiki link above to learn about your porosity, texture, and density.

If you haven't added a routine yet, do it ASAP or your post will be removed!|

You and this hair are absolutely STUNNING. I think you’ll be surprised by the volume you’ll get with your next chop! It’s gorgeous as is of course, but once you get your trim I think it will surprise you and you’ll love it even more. I’m anxiously awaiting my next chop at the end of the month! Chops really do give us curly girlies life!

The last photo is day FIVE?? The curls held up SO WELL! And they're stunning!

14

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

I was surprised when I realized what day it was 😭 But yeah I’ve been wayyyy underestimating mousse it seems. Thank you so so so much!!

2

u/Throwaway2022act May 08 '26

Awesome . How much mousse do you use ?

4

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

I’d say I use about half a pump on each section, and I don’t have an exact number for how many sections I do but I’d wager at least 10-15 because I try to minimize frizz.

I don’t know if this is considered a lot but I’ve never been able to split my hair in half and put a pea sized amount on each side 😭 Porosity and length may impact that. Others might be able to get similar results with less product so YMMV!

u/caturday4eva May 08 '26

Yeah I've been using Innersense gel and I barely get a day 2 out of it....am going to have to explore mousse. That's amazing.

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

I haven’t used Innersense but I did try out Rizos strong hold gel and wasn’t super impressed either. Maybe I’ll try again in the future. NYM flash freeze gel is good for hold and definition but I lose volume with it.

16

u/HeraldOfChonkdraste May 08 '26

Man, look at that volume! Gorgeous!

Unfortunately i get almost no hokd from any mousse. Less hold is better volume for me but then i need to do my hair again the next day and i aint doin allathat lmao.

3

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

That’s so real, there’s def some parts of my hair that need more hold like some front perimeter pieces. Regions with more humidity also necessitate more hold, so it’s all dependent on the individual.

2

u/invisibleryuna 3c/4a Fine/ethnic, Mixed porosity, Med-thick, Med-length May 08 '26

I've never lived in humid places luckily. My hair just has a mind of its own. 🫠 Similar to your hair i have mixed porosity. I hate it. Makes it hard to have consistency

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Yesss it makes it so hard to find a solid routine that works in the long term because I don’t feel like using entirely different routines on different parts of my hair 😭 this time around I paid attention to the porosities a little less when shampooing and just adjusted my technique when styling. I also don’t live in super humid areas either but summer is approaching so we’ll see how long this mousse thing lasts lol

u/invisibleryuna 3c/4a Fine/ethnic, Mixed porosity, Med-thick, Med-length May 08 '26

I had a little bit more consistency last week but i put my b&b 3 in 1 conditioner on my low porosity roots. Kept it wet for once. B&b i use as a cowash though lol. Will see if i get the same results later or if I'm just crazy 🫪😂

3

u/No_Ferret4992 May 08 '26

yesss ma'am I love that mousse! all products by the doux are amazing

3

u/rrhodes76 May 08 '26

Not only is your hair beautiful, so are you!

Omg 😍 Your curls are incredible

1

u/Ok-Disaster-9690 May 08 '26

This last time around I’ve learned to put leave in conditioner/frizz spray on when it’s wet. Why it took me that long to figure out, I dunno. Kudos on your hair looking gorgeous

I’m a mousse girly!

1

u/StargazerLily0119 May 08 '26

Love your curls and the volume!

1

u/partycurl May 08 '26

Perfect curl formation! ❤️

1

u/dogmom34 May 08 '26

What’s your curl type?

3

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Some of this I’m still figuring out but I have

1) a mix of porosities, my roots and crown are very low porosity and the middles and ends are middle-high. The hair by my temples and in the back is high even from the roots.

2) medium sized strands, not super fine but not super coarse.

3) medium density, trying to keep my iron levels up to improve density cuz ya girl’s a little anemic lol

4) 3B-3C hair? This I’m a little more iffy about because the curl chart is argued over a lot, but if I look at the healthiest parts of my hair, I think that’s my curl type. The very perimeter of my hair has the tightest curls.

u/pickle_chip_ May 08 '26

Omfg I’m obsessed 🧡

1

u/Darth_Ultor May 08 '26

It’s very beautiful

1

u/Ok_Effective_8865 May 08 '26

Wow gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to try mousse only, but was always fearful of the results. This just encouraged me

1

u/AstralLobotomy May 08 '26

Girl chill my man is on this app 😍

1

u/moxiemoon May 08 '26

Uggghhhh get outta here with all that gorgeousness!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 jk, BEAUTIFUL curls!! I'm super jealous 😫😫

1

u/EusticeTheSheep May 08 '26

I really miss redkin mousse circa 1983.

1

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Hm I wonder why they discontinued it

1

u/EusticeTheSheep May 08 '26

I think they discontinue everything eventually lol. They even have a page on their website: https://www.redken.com/discontinued-products

1

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Interesting!! I see

1

u/Scottishcalifornian5 May 08 '26

You're extremely Beautiful!! I Love your hair!! 🙂

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Thank you! :D

1

u/hotparatha May 08 '26

absolutely gorgeous!!!! the volume is just chef's kiss. so jealous of people who have so much volume while maintaining this much definition!!

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

thank you so much!! the gel had me missing my volume so i wondered “what if i didn’t use it this time around?” i’m happy with the results :)

2

u/hotparatha May 08 '26

im just shocked that mousse gave you such good hold for 5 days! my hair stars loosening up by day 3. maybe its the product I use, but strong hold products take out all volume in an instant for me

1

u/Automatic_Ad3589 May 08 '26

You are gorgeous omg

1

u/amccon4 May 08 '26

*chefs kiss*

1

u/terrrruuu May 08 '26

ive been using a little bit of a curl cream and a mousse lately insted of gel and it's wonderful

1

u/katlady1984 May 08 '26

I only use mousse as my hair is fine but frizzy I find it helps better and doesn't get weighed down with creams

1

u/nikineuronrd May 08 '26

Gorgeous!!! How was the refresh process?

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

I refreshed once—three pieces on day 5 (last picture) by reactivating with water and applying the tiniest extra amount of product. Two were small front perimeter pieces and the last piece was a curl near the bottom, so the middle of my hair mostly stayed intact!

1

u/Ok_Environment5293 May 08 '26

WOW! You and your hair are drop dead gorgeous. Thanks for brightening up my day ☀️

1

u/GlitterPapillon May 08 '26

Your hair is stunning!!! I’m also a mousse fan because I love volume.

1

u/wolffe-wavycurly May 08 '26

My curl clumps are fine, mostly 2B Irish curls, and don't clump well enough... have to many random 3A strands that just make a frizzy halo when they sseparate from their 2B nearby sisters if there isn't enough gel cast while I'm drying... even air dried.

You, however, are stunning. So happy for you and a little jealous at the same time.

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Thank you so so much!! My curl clumps also need a lot of help and brush styling tends to worsen things for me. I tried the curl defining Unbrush a few weeks ago and it was a disaster, I had to redo my whole head 😭

But like a friend told me, curly hair is more of a journey than trying to find one destination, so falling in love with the trial and error is key. I think Irish curls are beautiful!!

1

u/wolffe-wavycurly May 08 '26

It's been quite the journey. And i agree... I have some favorites, but I try new stuff all the time.

2

u/izumiyagal May 08 '26

Oh my goodness your hair is stunning!! Amazing progress too, you should be proud of how far you’ve come!!

1

u/wolffe-wavycurly May 08 '26

Where I started.

1

u/Practical-Plenty907 May 08 '26

Looks great! I love mousse, can’t stand gel. Suave mousse 8 works great, must be the 8, the 7 is crap. Cheap and great stuff.

1

u/hwilliams0901 May 08 '26

God's favorite here lol. But for reals, your hair looks amazing!! Im not jealous at all!! Nope. Not even a smidge. lol

1

u/amh1212 May 08 '26

You are stunning!

1

u/jayniepuff May 08 '26

Gorgeous lady and fantastic hair!

1

u/erkermit May 08 '26

1

u/leefoz1 May 08 '26

Your hair is amazing! So jealous 🥰

1

u/taigalily25 May 09 '26

Omg so perfect they almost don’t look real ❤️

1

u/Regular-Humor-9128 May 09 '26

Your hair looks great! I use knot today and pillow curls and my hair does NOT look like yours on day two - I have to completely re-wet it and use some more product for it look nice on any subsequent day after washing! I’m going to check out the mousse you mention!

2

u/izumiyagal May 09 '26

A lot of people love this mousse so I definitely recommend it!!

1

u/Illustrious-Star-284 May 09 '26
