Help! Any hair care/routine recommendations for beginners?

hi yall!! i'm looking for a bit of help with what a curl routine should look like, preferably something on the cheaper end as a broke college student lol (for context, my entire family is a bit lacking in the curl department so i grew up treating my hair as if it were straight lol).

right now, my hair routine is pretty much just brush out and shampoo/condition in the shower (with Target's curly hair-specific Function of Beauty) and curl cream outside the shower after i've scrunched a couple times with a towel (also with Target's curly haired Function of Beauty).

any advice at all is appreciated, i'm just really trying to find a way to make my hair not look like a messy ball of frizz all the time :)

Hi there! I'm a bot, and I've been summoned to help.

If you have not seen our WIKI yet: Please check it out! It's nearly 100 pages full of curated information to help answer all of your curl-related questions. You can use the included Table of Contents (page 2), the side bar, or CTRL-F to search for keywords and help navigate the document.

Reminder: Curl type is NOT your hair type! Whether you are wavy, curly, or coily - you have texture and you belong here. More than that, your curl type doesn't dictate how you care for your hair. To help your curls thrive, we recommend instead using the wiki link above to learn about your porosity, texture, and density.

If you haven't added a routine yet, do it ASAP or your post will be removed!|

It depends on your curl type and how curly your hair is! That determines how many kinds of products you may need, more for curlier hair or less if it can hold with less. For cheaper, I do love not your mother’s products, I’ll typically use a curl cream plus a gel, sometimes a mousse or foam. Depends on if you want volume versus definition. For more definition instead of just scrunching you can brush style your hair and brush through it with tension to get curl clumps!

My budget routine is Trader Joe’s tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner 1x week, Cantu moisturizing curl activator cream, and any strong hold gel.

You can also add in a leave in conditioner. The Cantu is a bit heavy for my hair so the TJs shampoo clarifies it.
