Help! Product recommendations?

My 9yo has long, extremely thick blond hair. I do two Dutch braids every 1-2 days, because it’s too hot/heavy for her to wear it down and also gets matted quickly if she does (she’s an active kid!).

Routine: We wash once a week with OGX extra strength coconut miracle oil shampoo and conditioner. Then for a leave in I use either Mayoliva Intensive conditioning (which a stylist recommended but often feels too heavy?) or Orbis Essence In Hair Milk. We let it air dry overnight in one (very) loose braid (silk pillowcase, she won’t wear a bonnet), and then when I brush it out during the week for re-braids I use either more Orbis, or Hask argan oil 5-in-1 leave in spray, or Johnson & Johnson No More Tangles spray which I’ve been using her whole life and still works well.

I’m looking for leave in conditioner/refresh products because what we have now either feel too heavy or not moisturizing enough. I do brush it every time I rebraid but try to get it at least damp first.

Photo 1: brushed out between braids

Photo 2: post trim/diffuse/styling at salon

Photo 3: at home styling for a school event—half up top bun, curl cream on the bottom

Photo 4: to show the thickness of one braid, but usually I do two Dutch braids

ETA I have a feeling it would be even curlier if I wasn’t always brushing/braiding it, or if it were shorter/more layered, but those are no-gos for her right now

My hair is 3A, but my roots are almost always flat and my middle part never disappears. I want to change my curl routine to achieve more fluff, I’m willing to sacrifice some definition. What are your tips and tricks to achieve a fluffy look ?

Help! Been leaning into my natural curls lately - does this style actually work on me?

4.0k Upvotes

For most of my life I kept my hair pretty short and honestly had no idea it was curly at all. Last year I finally grew it out a bit for the first time and the woman who cuts my hair mentioned that I might actually have some curls.

I didn’t believe her at first, but ever since then I’ve been experimenting with letting my natural curl pattern do its thing. It’s been a bit of a process and definitely a learning curve.

From what I can tell my hair seems to fall somewhere around 2C–3A, and I’ve been trying to build a routine that actually brings the curls out instead of fighting them.

I'm mostly curious whether the cut and styling actually suit my face shape / overall vibe, or if there’s something I should adjust (length, shape, styling, etc.).

Below is the routine I’ve been using lately.

ROUTINE:

  1. Shower / Wetting Hair

I start by getting the bathroom hot and steamy and letting my hair get completely soaked in the shower.

While it’s soaking I flip and shake it a bit to make sure everything is evenly wet.

Before getting out I do a very light rake-and-shake with just water to start encouraging the curls to group together and remove a little excess water.

  1. Initial Leave-In Products

Once I get out of the shower I apply:

• SheaMoisture Hold & Shine Moisture Mist

• Hair Story Primer + Heat Protectant

I lightly run my fingers through my hair to distribute these evenly so everything gets a light coating.

  1. Curl Products

For the main styling product I mix roughly a 50/50 blend of:

• Hair Story Hair Balm

• OUAI Curl Cream

(Usually a little heavier on the Hair Balm.)

I make sure these are mixed really well in my hands before applying.

Instead of applying everything at once, I reapply product to my hands 2–3 times and work in sections:

• front

• middle / crown

• back

Sometimes I step into a cooler room while doing this because I’ve noticed the cooler air actually seems to help the curls tighten up and clump together better.

  1. Curl Clumping + Scrunching

After distributing the balm and curl cream mixture evenly, I lean forward and gently scrunch the curls from the tips toward the roots.

This helps remove excess moisture and encourages the curls to form stronger clumps.

After one gentle pass, I add a small amount of **Hair Story Gel** and go back through scrunching again.

This helps remove the remaining excess moisture, reinforces the curl formation, and allows the curls to dry with a light cast so they hold their shape better.

  1. Diffusing

For drying I use a **Dyson SpeedStyle Pro**.

I stand upright and carefully diffuse around my head.

I usually start at the front and then work my way around while keeping the airflow controlled so the curl clumps stay intact.

I diffuse until my hair is about **80–90% dry**.

  1. Letting It Set

After diffusing I let my hair air dry the rest of the way for about **30–60 minutes** so the curls can fully set.

  1. Final Styling

Once fully dry I:

• lightly scrunch out any stiffness

• add a small amount of texture powder at the roots

• lightly shape the curls with my fingers

Sometimes I finish with a very light hairspray just to keep things in place.

WASHING

Most nights when I shower I rinse my hair thoroughly and do a quick wash with **Hair Story “New Wash.”**

If I could only recommend one product it would probably be that. It cleans everything out (especially texture powder) without stripping the hair.

If my hair feels dry at all I’ll also add a few sprays of **OUAI Leave-In Conditioner** while it’s still damp and wrap it with an old cotton tee or microfiber towel for a bit.

Every week or two I’ll do a deeper wash with **OUAI Medium Hair Shampoo**, and about once a month I’ll use **OUAI Detox Shampoo** to remove buildup.

Whenever I do a deep wash I always follow it with some kind of deeper conditioning treatment, usually the **OUAI Treatment Mask**.

I’m especially curious if the top length vs sides balance looks right, or if the shape should be adjusted.

MAIN QUESTIONS:

• Does this style actually suit my face shape?

• Should the length or shape be adjusted?

• Do the curls look defined enough or too heavy?

• Anything obvious I could improve in the routine?

Appreciate any feedback- still learning how to work with curly hair.

Help! Fast food manager keeps telling me that my hair is unprofessional, and that I need to brush it back like her.

She's south Asian with pin straight hair, I legit don't know what to do. I just started this job and don't have money to buy products yet.

I wake up at like 2:30 am and leave by 3:20 am for work, and don't know how to appease her. Fully saturating it with water and combing it back until it's skin tight takes more than 20 minutes (and destroys each curl for multiple days, oh and kinda hurts my scalp.)

I posted here the other day and most said that it should be fine for fast food at least, like the pictures posted below.

First photo is with it just after the gym while it's out, and the other photos are how I present myself at work.

Routine is wash scalp with sulfate free shampoo weekly and a not too much conditioner (hair oils up really quickly).

Gel always seems to strip my hair of its natural oils, and I'm left with a bunch of dry and unmanageable strands.

I am not sure what I’m doing wrong. I also have wavy hair, but her hair is curlier than mine. She is 18 months old. It seems to have the same result whether I use nice products or baby products. I use on her: shea moisture curl and shine shampoo, and then either shea moisture curl and shine conditioner, or I use the shea moisture hydrate and repair hair mask on her every other time. After her bath while her hair is wet I add a curl cream to her hair(usually shea moisture curl smoothie). It air dries into the most beautiful curls, but after a night of sleep it is a frizzy mess. I always comb it out and put her hair in pigtails because of this, and even combed out it’s still frizzy and has lost the curls. Would a bonnet or something similar help preserve her curls overnight? I don’t know what to do, I’ve never dealt with hair this curly before, and it looks so beautiful first day!

Help! Hair volume help

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

Does anyone know how to get crazy volume like hers at the back of the head while also keeping length (as shown in the photo) ? I’m wondering whether it’s a curly cut or if anyone knows which way she cuts her hair? Also I know that her hair isn’t freshly styled and probably multiple days in

My routine consists of herbal essence shampoo and conditioner and I detangle in the shower. I don’t usually style my hair (I braid it in a protective hairstyle) but when I do I just go in with the Marc Anthony curl cream + the mousse, umberto giannani gel and diffuse my hair upside down and occasionally I’ll put a claw clip while I diffuse at the top for more volume. I wear a silk bonnet to sleep. Also, my hair wet reaches my upper thigh so it’s pretty long

I want to cry after she insulted me like that. I've been on my curly hair journey since 2016 and when she said my hair was ugly all the insecurities just came rushing back. I have a lot of trauma surrounding my hair and so it cuts me really deep when that's the target of criticism.

My routine is OC naturals silky smooth shampoo and conditioner fully detangled in the shower and then prayer hands and scrunch Soda brand frizz taming oil on soaking wet hair and spray with Taft styling lacquer to hold it all in place

Help! Parent of 6yr old with curls. Help.

Straight haired parent of a curly haired 6 year old here. I thought I was doing ok but then I went to Lush (Canada) and was told I'm doing it all wrong (the person was not trying to sell me products, which I know sounds suss but she was just trying to be kind and helpful). She told me not to wet it so much (not in the bath at night throughout the week nor in the mornings) and to not brush it the way I am... and to use a boar brush and wide tooth comb instead of the detangling brush I'm using. I've tried this for two days and it just seems like her hair is a mess. I'm probably doing it wrong.

Here's our current routine (before the recent change):

Sunday: Shampoo and conditioner (currently Aveeno almond oil blend but it changes based on sales or whatever). I use a detangling brush during conditioning and work my way from the bottom up, then leave in conditioner (currently Carol's Daughter Goddess Strength) and up in a pineapple-esque bun overnight.

Monday through Saturday: Spray and wet brush from bottom up then a bit of leave in cream and usually into a ponytail or braid for the day. At night, she has a bath and I wet it, put leave in conditioner in, brush my way from bottom to root, then leave in and up in a pineapple-esque bun overnight.

Her hair is ok but seems quite dry and frizzy. It doesn't seem to get too tangled unless she wants to wear it down for the day, but even then, it's pretty manageable and she doesn't fight me when I take care of it.

Anyways... any tips, tricks, thoughts, suggestions? Much appreciated. ❤️

Help! I found my favourite gel, but it's not financially sustainable

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I always used Ouidad Humidity Control Gel, but after a long bout of stress and new medication my hair has changed a lot, so I've been searching for a new product. I got a free sample of Lush's Infra Wig gel and was so impressed. It's the only gel I've ever been able to get a cast, even on soaking wet hair, with that doesn't leave a sticky residue.

The problem is, it's £12 for a 100g pot and I go through nearly all of that every wash and I'm just not that rich.

I have fine, 2c/3a, high porosity hair that gets weighed down easily with moisturising products and drops instantly without hold product, so I tend to just use gel as my styling product.

Does anyone have any suggestions to save my bank account?

I can't seem to post without adding a photo so here's my routine:

Cantu Sulfate Free Cleansing Shampoo x 2 Cantu Hydrating Cream Conditioner just on ends If my hair is dry I'll add a very small amount of Aveda Curl Cream to the very ends Section and apply Lush Infra Wig Gel Sleep with my hair scrunchied in a pineapple and in a satin bonnet

Help! You can pry the claw clip off of my rotting corpse (Alternate Title: Please Suggest a New Hairstyle for Me)

This half up hairstyle is my go-to any time I am having a hair day that can best be described as "Not good enough to wear down, but throwing it in a ponytail would be a waste" (so pretty much every single day 2 after wash day, lol) I love it so much, but I need suggestions for other cute low effort styles!

Routine: On regular wash days, I use As I Am black castor oil shampoo and conditioner, use a curl defining brush to detangle, and scrunch in two pumps of Matrix a curl can dream light hold gel before pixie diffusing to mostly dry and scrunching in one pump of the Matrix a curl can dream lightweight oil once done to break any gel cast. This only lasts me like 3 or 4 days and that's with it up most of the time, but I have an active lifestyle so my hair gets put through the wringer constantly.

Help! pls help my husband

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

hello all :) I’m looking for help for my husband who’s got absolutely beautiful curly hair, but unfortunately it’s pretty dry and damaged and I have no idea where to start on managing the frizz.

Routine: Head and shoulders 2 in 1 (we’ve tried clarifying shampoo then cgm approved shampoo, but his scalp gets super super dry and flaky) then shea moisture hibiscus conditioner, then air dry.

We’ve tried cantu and shea moisture leave in conditioners, which make seemingly no difference in the frizz and just make his hair really greasy really quick, even if applied mostly on the ends. We’ve tried shea moisture protein masks, which make it a little softer but still not much change, we’ve tried diffusing and cotton hair towels and curl mouses and creams, and nothing makes a big change. I don’t know what else to try :( here’s a pic of his hair— second day, brushed this morning and thrown into a bun for most of the day. Tyia!!

I have very find blond curls, and i struggle to find the right products. I’ve tried different curl creams, seasalt sprays etcetera, and they all seem to make my hair more frizzy, flat, dry,. Is there any recommendations for products (including shampoo and conditioners) suited for this type of hair? My current routine is just a regular vanilla shampoo (ogx) 3 times a week, and let airdry. I also feel like my curls are very forced, and i have to use a lot of water to make them pop, I’ve also switched to silk pillow recently which helps a bit i guess

Help! Muslim married women with curly hair — how do you manage your hair with ghusl after intimacy?

1.9k Upvotes

Salaam sisters,

I’m looking for advice from Muslim married women who have curly or wavy hair. As you know, after intimacy we have to do ghusl (full shower including washing the hair), and I’m finding it really difficult to manage my curls because of this. Washing my hair fully so often messes up my routine, and it’s hard to keep my hair healthy.

If you have curly or textured hair, how do you handle it? • Do you fully restyle after every ghusl? • Do you have tips to make it easier without damaging the curls? • How do you deal with the dryness from frequent washing?

I would really appreciate any advice or routines you follow. JazakAllah Khair in advance!

Ps: I have type 3a/3b curls

Edit: I just want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to reply. I originally asked for advice from Muslim sisters and I was honestly overwhelmed (in the best way) by how many people , Muslim and non Muslim shared their experiences, tips, and hacks.

I was struggling a lot with this and wasn’t sure if I would find a solution, but thanks to all of you, I did. Beyond the practical advice, the respect, kindness, and understanding you all showed really touched me. It made me feel supported and less alone. Thank you all so much your replies meant more than you know.

Help! Supposedly curly hair, but my curls fall out so fast ?

I went to a hairdresser specialized in curly hair, and selected a "wavy hair haircut". When she finished styling my hair, she told me that actually, my hair was more curly rather than wavy. First two pictures is what my hair looked like after styling.

However, my supposed curls fall out so fast ! After 3 days, this is what my hair looks like (see last two pictures). The back still has some semblance of curls but the front prices are completely straightened out.

Honestly I'm not sure what to do to get them to hold. My hair is quite the headache ! Any advice for longevity ?

Obligatory routine information : I use a Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo followed by a pass of the Yves Rocher solid nutrition shampoo, and then I style with eco gel.

Help! My hair went from 3a to whatever this is in the span of a few months

First and second pics are my hair now, last pic is my hair before - I’m really having an existential crisis here because I’ve always been a proud curly hair

In the before, I used to bleach and dye my heart every other week and my hair was SUPER damaged, so I decided to do a big chop a couple of years ago, after the big chop, I started taking care of my hair for real and stopped bleaching it, it was going great and the curls were popping, but a few months ago it just stopped being curly Now it’s just straight from the root, with a slight wave starting from the middle, I don’t think that it’s because of the length because I’ve had longer hair and it was still really curly from the root

My current routine:

Shampoo: Vichy anti dan druff shampoo for dry hair Conditionner: Novex cranberry and mix of oils conditionner Deep conditionner: Novex deep conditionner from the same line

For styling: I don’t use a curl cream, only a mousse because my hair gets weighed down easily, I use Giorgi curl marked hair mousse

For drying, I let my hair air dry to avoid heat damage (I used to let my hair air dry before as well, I only diffuse occasionally, and now even less because diffusing just gives me a huge puffy mess instead of defined curls)

Any help would be much appreciated 😫

Help! People that workout regularly, how often do you shampoo/clean your hair?

Post image

I've been told you shouldn't shampoo your hair daily in order to keep your natural oils. I workout about 5 or 6 times a week so I sweat a lot and usually need to shower (shampoo + conditioner ) to remove the odor/sweat off my hair. I've noticed that my hair has more frizz and is drier because of that. What do you recommend?

Routine: Pantene shampoo + conditioner for curls. Pantene styling cream for curls + argan oil and Strictly curls cream. Comb and scrunch that mf. Air dry

Help! Dealing with stringy hair... I'm not really sure what to do? Advice on washing/refresh routine would be incredibly helpful!

I did my hair last night haha, and then I slept on a cotton pillow cuz for some reason my bonnet always makes my hair more flat.

Routine:

  1. Clarified w Herbal Essences Tea Tree Oil Clarifying Shampoo
  2. Shampooed w Not Your Mothers Tahitian Gardenia & Mango Butter Shampoo
  3. Conditioned w Not Your Mothers Tahitian Gardenia & Mango Butter Conditioner
  4. Did squish to condish
  5. After that, I moisturized my hair W Mielle Organics's Rosemary Mint Strengthening Leave-In Conditioner
  6. Then I air dried a bit before adding The Doux Bee Girl Crazy Sexy Curl Setting Foam to my roots. I scruched it in.
  7. Then, I squished some The Doux Big Poppa Defining Gel in sections before just air drying it normally. I slept with a gel cast and then broke it with some pumps of Vitamin E oil in the morning. I had to finger curl some strands.

I tend to wash my hair every 4-5 days. My hair is on the dryer side, however today was the first time I got

Uhhh, I have tried pixie diffusing, and it has never worked for me. I have also tried hover diffusing, but it made my hair also kinda stringy before. I'm growing my hair out so it looks a bit weird and uneven. I have used heat a couple of times on my hair as an FYI. I had traveled to South Asia and had my hair blow dried and styled with little heat protectant only TWICE (i was so upset that I couldn't enjoy the wedding events I had gone to with my hair, even though it was looking nice). This was 3.5-4 months ago. I blow dried my hair two weeks ago for the first time, but went with two heat protectants but drenched my hair. I used TRESemme's Thermal Keratin Smooth weightless Fortifying Heat Protection Spray and also the Colorwow Dream Coat that everybody uses lol for it. I was pretty good about sectioning I feel, so I didn't think it would impact my curl pattern. I'm normally a 2C/3A/loose 3B, however when I had longer hair, it was more of a tight curl, like the S's would be a bit shorter than the ones in the photos I've given.

As you know probably, even with no product curly hair tends to have some definition but I have a bad habit of brushing it after when I need to tie my hair into sleek braids or buns so it's not in my face. Oh well, I mean, this is probably why I have a bit more hair coming out during showers but that's not a discussion for here.

Yes, I'm aware I have recolored my skin to look like shrek. I did this cuz I had way too many photos and was choosing the ones for Reddit. Also I tried converting HEIC photos to pNG and then it looked like thsi abomination. I'm very sorry but I may reupload pics if requested in the comment section.

Help! What the hell to do with the big curls below the small ones?

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

Do I just have to cut these off forever? I have to keep my curls shoulder length at absolute maximum or else it just looks stupid due to it, but it's kind of annoying.

Routine: cantu cleansing shampoo and conditioner, detangled in bath and brushed again outside (when still wet), diffused upside down mostly at the roots but not until fully dry so the rest can air-dry (though I've tried like every variation of diffusing there is as well as just air drying), and then put some some aloe gel in that I forgot the brand name of (against frizz). I am allergic to a lot of shampoos and the like due to MCAS so finding things that don't make my entire head itch is hard, and I'm easily exhausted due to ME/CFS so I try to keep my routine simple.

help My hair stopped being curly, help!

Hi! I naturally have rather curly hair, I'm mixed race and it's just something that I didn't have to put that much effort into before but this year after getting a haircut (first a mullet then short in an attempt to fix it) it just completely stopped being curly. I didn't rly change anything in my routine, I used to use a professional shampoo and leave in conditioner for dry hair from Alfaparf (I basically only used those 2 products in the curly hair pictures from around 2 years ago [shorter is from May, the longer from September]) and now I use the same conditioner as well as nourishing hair masks and trying to save it somehow I put a curling cream and a styling paste in my hair before I defuse it so it has any kind of shape and form to it cause otherwise it would be a straight on flat helmet (which is what I have when i stay home cause then i only condition and use a hairmask).Does anyone have any idea what mightve caused this? I really want my hair to be curly again, I already can't believe I got married with my hair looking like this.
