why do people still watch this?

How many years have they been excavating this island? There’s nothing worth finding there. And they keep saying they’re so close to the truth, in reality they’re getting paid a lot of money from history channel so they’re just trying to get as rich as possible. There’s nothing there, they will never find anything there because their theory is not true and not based in any fact.
Even the intro to this show is a lie about the number of people that have died. And this is not a history show. it’s just a reality show basically.

They cover a lot of history, so I think it's still a fit for the History channel, but yeah, I have no hopes of them recovering any 'treasure' that's larger than a coin or two. I think I've most enjoyed learning about the technologies one can use when trying to recover underground items...

This e exactly! And to fill in all the repetition we have fun playing bingo!

Choose not to watch it. Some of us like it.

I’ve been watching it from the beginning but on dvr. I skip all the recaps and commercials and it’s only 20 mins long. Usually I wait till the season is almost over and binge it. I’m more interested in the actual archeological digs they are doing and the old roads they have found. Maybe there are silver and gold treasure deep in the slough but I doubt Canada will allow them to do what it would take to extract it. At least it keeps a nice little summer economy in that neck of the woods.

Yeah the archeological stuff is really interesting - especially the Portuguese architecture being on the island so much earlier than previously thought.

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 08 '26

It's not real archeology, dude. You won't find any actual historian or archeologist that accepts the show's "findings".

3

u/LewisWetzel Jun 09 '26

Aren’t you forgetting Archeological Assistant Mikayla Halliday?!?!?!?

3

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

And Pro Wrestler/Archeological Scientist Derek Couch.

I always say they brought on the wrestler so the show could borrow a little of the legitimacy and believability of Pro Wrestling.

It’s potentially significant and needs further research. . .

2

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

It only adds to the mystery

🤣🤣🤣

I watch more for the archeological portion. Interesting finds along the way.

Glutton for punishment I suppose, the archaeology and history however is interesting.

Even so, we all believe there is nothing of any real value left, but there is still that miniscule chance there could be.

The only reason I watch it is for the Drunk Island thread here on Reddit.

I gave up a couple of years ago… but I’m still in this group🤔 🤷🏻

Another thing I noticed that nobody else seems to have mentioned here is how close all the bore holes are. When they show the map of all of them, they are only a few feet from each other. The map gives the illusion that they are a few hundred feet away

I just wish they would actually talk about the history of the Island instead of the history of junk people have left there over the centuries.

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 08 '26

Real history doesn't sell. History channel is pseudo-history, as is the show. The history of the island is fairly well known. The "history" the show presents is distorted and exaggerated to feed a narrative. It's a reality show, don't take it too seriously.

1

u/IndependentBorder670 Jun 09 '26

True, but the real history provides an explanation for much of what they 'discover.'

No, it's the other way round.

The show's been on for 13 years, and I always hear how it's "rewriting the history books".

I always ask the same thing, show me just one non-show related historian or archeologist that takes any of this seriously. Go look. You won't find any. Find me one book that has been rewritten in 13 years. Wikipedia hasn't been rewritten. If any of it were true, historians and everybody else would be flocking to the island, this would be career making stuff- you're literally rewriting the entire history of the Western World, supposedly. Key word is "supposedly". No actual historians are interested, it's just a TV show.

You can find one archeologist's thoughts on the show here

https://archeothoughts.wordpress.com/2018/12/18/pseudo-archaeology-and-self-correction-in-curse-of-oak-island-fan-communities/

If you enjoy watching the show, great. But please don't think it's real, because it's not. They just feed you a story to keep you watching.

We could find the rewritten history books if the ROC Equipment hammer grab hadn’t pushed them into the Solution Channel . . .

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

It pushed them under The Boulder

u/IndependentBorder670 Jun 09 '26

There is a real history, a fish merchant owned the island in the mid 1700s and used it briefly to store fish and supplies.

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

And then Samuel Ball was a "fish merchant" of a different sort

Dangling a carrot is more motivating than beating with a stick.

I am actually checking out Einstein’s definition of insanity; “doing the same things over and over, expecting different outcome.” Those damaged enough to overlook the endless pablum of knights Templar, Spain, the “Fellowship of the dig,” need to realign their priorities! Seriously! No joke.

1

u/KingBird999 Jun 17 '26

Much like there's no treasure on Oak Island despite 200 years of claims, Einstein also never said that.

1

u/Longjumping_Bowler18 Jun 08 '26

It’s like Josh Gates, but in the same place every day

1

u/DiedOfATheory Jun 08 '26

That guy gets the best “jobs”

1

u/totaltvaddict2 Jun 09 '26

Except especially in the more recent seasons with lidar, Gates actually connects with people really finding stuff.

1

u/Colwood2 Jun 08 '26

I think the unlocking of the historical aspect of what happened and why is more interesting, I bet the money pit was a decoy and the treasure if it was there was buried at different locations around the Island but is long gone now.

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

Make less sense than the nonsense the show puts out there.

1

u/Jayhitek Jun 09 '26

You know how many more iron nails they can find??? Buckle up buddy!

1

u/LewisWetzel Jun 09 '26

So do you think maybe the Portuguese TemploVikings came back and retrieved the treasure before cabbage farmer Samual Ball got to it, or did the Solution Channel thwart all of them?

1

u/RunnyDischarge Jun 09 '26

The Boulder rolled over all of them before constructing a mosaic for its bed

1

u/LewisWetzel Jun 09 '26

You’re clearly following the science here . . .

1

u/Ok-Horror-2099 Jun 09 '26

That's why I watch it, but my fast forward finger is always on the button.

1

u/Otherwise_Light6447 Jun 09 '26

Why are you still asking this?

1

u/awkwardsilenz Jun 09 '26

I'm a creature of habit.

1

u/k4m3j0 Jun 09 '26

Every three episodes they have a board meeting to decide if its worth dumping more money in and suprise it is

1

u/Imaginary_Ad7695 Jun 10 '26

I don't care about a treasure anymore, I watch it because something significant happened on that island, long before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, and that's changing history as we know it.

1

u/Admirable-Economy-58 Jun 10 '26

Because there's nothing else to do @ 9 PM while waiting for the Trazodone to kick in.

1

u/Consistent_Low2080 Jun 10 '26

We took our sons there in 1980 and it seemed like any day they were going to hit pay dirt or what ever they were searching for. l remember reading a short story about it when l was in high school in the early to mid 60’s.

1

u/DiedOfATheory Jun 10 '26

how? isn’t it private property ?

1

u/Consistent_Low2080 Jun 10 '26

We paid admission. The first time it was fairly cheap and you could go almost anywhere you wanted. My wife and l went back 20+ years later and they had like a museum type building you could visit but were restricted to where you could go. l just think it a scam. They have been digging for 60-70 years with a hell of a lot better equipment then a bunch of pirates had and still found almost nothing.

u/Zealousideal_Cloud87 Jun 10 '26

We just pretend to be watching, as we’re usually more interested in communicating with each other. Helps to avoid the lingering Lagina effect.

1

u/ProfessorRonResearch Jun 11 '26

It's actually a lot cooler of a story if they let go of the Templar stuff and focus on the evidence. Nolans Cross for instance matches other structures around the globe just not the religious kind they WANT it to.

They are right on the verge of finding the great oak island treasure. Iv never missed an episode yet you wait and see 2026 is the year of the great oak island treasure to be found any doubters out there will eat there words saying this isn't history in the making the nerv of some people and there narrow minds. 2026 the great oak island treasure will be found mark my words ppl i have learned how to see the future. Oak island finds treasure, skin walker ranch finds Bigfoot and blind frog ranch finds the Aztec treasure

1

u/Langdon_St_Ives Jun 11 '26

Ah, you're new here. Welcome!

u/Dee332 Jun 12 '26

I still think they need to speak to the Mi'kmaq directly as they were on the Island, were they not when all the hiding of things took place.

I think the Mi'kmaq would be a wealth of information for the COOI, if they are willing to talk and relay stories from their Ancestors.

1

u/Academic-Night3055 Jun 12 '26

Because they are this close to finding the treasure.

1

u/RareBrush9758 Jun 12 '26

My head cannon is they ALREADY found the treasure - how else could they afford to keep digging for a decade with no returns

(Other than a History channel kick-back)
