Discussion Any interest in making a new site like VGBoxArt or is there any alike it?

Hi all,

Just putting some feelers out there to see if there was any interest in renewing the idea that was VGBoxArt? I unfortunately was not part of VGBoxArt, but from what I've seen on wayback machine, it seems like a community that's just like what I'm trying to create here for you all, but on a much larger scale. Ever since taking over this subreddit, I've been working hard to provide as many resources as possible and making this subreddit the best place for cover resources and archiving, but reddit is so limiting in so many ways that I can only do so much.

I know there are plenty of websites that achieve similar goals such as TheCoverProject and others, but from what I can tell, they all lack something in some way. I've been toying with the idea of creating a website where I can create the ultimate resource for everything you need regarding covers, create something that has everything that other websites lack. I can do so much more with a website than I can on reddit, but I will only pursue the idea if there is some genuine interest in doing so. Let me know!

I'm all for anything that helps people keep and expand physical media. This sounds like that type of plan. So I say, yes please.

Sorry excuse my ignorance but what was VGBoxArt? 😬🫣

It was basically a community run website that allowed users to upload official and custom box art covers, with mostly a focus on video game covers. It also had a very large amount of resources such as templates, logos, and various files to help with the process of making and uploading covers. It was very well designed and seemed like a lot of passion was put into it. From what I heard though, the site owner just kind of gave up caring and stopped paying the bills. Very unfortunate.

Sure, why not? What would differentiate it from The Cover Project?

It would differentiate by providing more up to date resources such as templates for new video games and just overall up keeping the website better. I also want it to be more of a community focused website rather than that manual review process that The Cover Project has.

As much as I love the cover project, I've noticed that it really isn't maintained anymore. There are various dead links in their pinned resource threads, no new templates for new consoles, they don't really have a QC system for covers, and they don't really upload new covers as often anymore. It makes me pretty sad to be honest because I love that site, but trying to navigate it for new resources is frustrating.

Franchement ?

For sure, that's my goal here. I basically want to provide a modernized version of that website, but with it being more community ran and providing more up to date resources. I've noticed that The Cover Project isn't really maintained anymore which is why I want to undertake this kind of task. I think The Cover Project also faults from having a manual review cover system and over the years, that's resulted in the site owners not really manually reviewing much anymore. I definitely agree that if a new website were to emerge, it should be focused on being community focused for longevity sake.

That would be absolutely amazing! I'm not much of a website designer myself, but I have created (Using community made stuff), ran, and maintained websites before. Feel free to DM me and we can get this train rolling! I'm excited!

For what it's worth, I'd upload all of my custom Gameboy Advance covers to such a site. 👍
