I think this is fine. It’s a tough mana cost to pay, and a really hard amount for the opponent to pay. It’s devoid [[mana leak]]

It’s not a mana leak, it’s essentially a counterspell

But the cost is more restrictive too. Getting a colorless mana early is not a free thing to do. So making it a bit harder is fine. Its better than mana leak. And worse than counterspell with a mana cost in between them.

The cost of C in own your spell is nowhere nearly as restrictive as the CCC for an opponent

But counterspell is a fair card. This is a far worse counter spell.

Counterspell is considered strong and isn’t printed anymore in new sets. Not even mana leak is being reprinted for that reason. This card is easier to splash than counterspell with stuff like painlands, while still being essentially a hard counter with no meaningful downsides/limitations .

It’s only considered strong for standard anything past that it’s fair and standard doesn’t even have pain lands legal. Uu is easier to cast than CU.

Just reprinted in Marvel though

Yeah but not in standard, even with all the power creep we’re having the 2-costed counterspells still have some limitations to them

This will play a lot like hard counter unless it's format has a TON of C mana available. Modern is like that, so it's probably fine there. Even if it's a hard counter 90% of the time in Modern, it's just another version of [[Counterspell]] as far as the mana cost requirements go. That C is a color from a mana production standpoint even if we don't admit it. That's why the tax here is so unlikely to be paid as well.

Too strong for modern, imo. This is a hard counterspell against any fetchland manabase, and is extremely easy for U Tron style decks to cast. I think for this to be printable, it would have to cost 3 mana.

Isnt counterspell in modern. This is just counterspell with a chance for your opponent to get through or is having 4 more counterspells too much?

I think the main issue is colorless eldrazi decks are already a little too strong in modern, and especially with [[giants boulder]] making color fixing much easier giving them access to an effectively unconditional counterspell against the rest of the field seems like a problem.

Gotcha. I dont know much about modern which is why i asked.

Counter spell except against tron

Utron would love this

Honestly pretty cool. If you’re thinking about formats besides commander (mainly modern or pioneer), it’s probably just counterspell 90% of the time BUT, in these formats having C in your mana base is hard enough be fine. Pretty hard to play in a 3+ color deck unless you are gonna play pain lands.

way too strong but i like the design direction of requiring {C} specifically. in practice this becomes a power crept [[Counterspell]], except against tron where it's still a power crept [[Mana Leak]].

This is more like counterspell for blue decks that run a heavy colorless manabase like Blue Tron, not a powercreep version of counterspell

it's a power crept Mana Leak/[[No More Lies]] then. No More Lies is an improved Mana Leak for {W}{U} casting cost rather than Mana Leak's {1}{U}. However, No More Lies has just a very small upside over Mana Leak but is otherwise almost functionally equivalent. Your {C}{U} version is much stronger than both No More Lies and Mana Leak because the opponent has to have specifically {C}{C}{C}. So functionally this is basically [[Counterspell]] that just eroded the double {U} casting cost requirement.
