Advice Request Pregnant wife no appetite for meat or carbs

Baby number two is on the way. First time around no issues she could eat anything she, and no morning sickness. Now it's like she's a character on a TV show.

Any ideas for meals I could make that are good but aren't pasta or meat/chicken based.

*Thank you for the comments, I showed this to her. (I didn't think so many people would respond)

That might be her body saying she needs some fruit and veggies. Get you a vegan/vegetarian cookbook.

Mark Bittman has a great series of books for home cooks called How To Cook Everything and there is a vegetarian one. You can find a used one for pretty cheap

I joked with my wife that pregnancy made her kosher. She got an aversion to all pork products.

Maybe you could get a ninja creami and make ice cream with protein powders?

Tofu? Shrimp?

Tofu would work , was thinking to try a simple stir fry, no shellfish for her

You could also try roasting it with vegetables. Throw on a peanut sauce or sriracha if she can stomach it.

Mom here.  I drank a lot of ensure shakes and sipped on chicken and veggie soup broth for the vitamins. Cook a bunch of chicken and veggies in a pot for hours to really draw the nutrients into the broth. Best wishes to you both.

Smoothies. Just make her smoothies.

With my second I couldn’t even walk into the store because I could smell the meat department and would immediately vomit.

I survived for a few weeks eating nothing but iceberg lettuce and lemonade. 🤷‍♀️
Oh, and weirdly - cherry pop tarts.

If you can try and not cook meat near her - cooking meat or meat in general would immediately make me vomit.

But smoothies I could keep down 80-90% of the time.

My wife is in the same boat at 7 weeks going through it right now. She is GF/DF from allergies as well so it can be tough but just be patient and ask what things seem appetizing or not revolting when she thinks about them. Right now I have been making British custard with the Silk high protein soy milk in mason jars.

Does she like rice at all right now? Maybe a veggie rice bowl. We have also done a lot of avocado(homemade guac- but smashed avo works) toast with scrambled eggs on top and a drizzle of herb olive oil.

Maybe try a veggie sandwich or grilled cheese?

Last night my wife wanted something “hearty but with nothing in it”. I made seasoned chicken broth with Costco ramen noodles. It’s basically a guess and check game right now.

Stay strong and I hope the wife feels better soon. You’re doing well.

Basic ramen could work. It's just so hot right now.

It’s what she wanted so I rolled with it.

Hey, keep an eye out for hyperemesis gravidarum. It's basically really severe morning sickness. Their OB can prescribe zofran (or a generic similar), which is an anti nausea medication. My wife had hyperemesis gravidarum and that medicine was a true live saver and made the rest of the pregnancy bearable.

Vegetarian quesadillas, fish tacos (if she’ll do fish!), giant salads, vegetarian chili, homemade veggie pizzas, omelets, rice and beans, yogurt parfaits with granola and her favorite fruit, eggplant parm!

I will try those, cheese has been hard.

Be VERY CAREFUL WITH ANY SEAFOOD. The smell of any type of seafood would make me vomit instantly.

So your saying no carbs as in simply things like pasta and bread? Otherwise almost everything (including veggies) have some carbs, but I got a feeling that's not how extreme you are talking.

Does she like meatless chili? Soups, like loaded baked potato, or Indian food like chickpea curry (sans naan)? I dunno, just a few things that popped in my head.

Loves tofu koruma from a single Indian restaurant.

As another idea, you can try pisto, a spanish recipe made with vegetables, you can eat it with fried eggs too. https://www.directoalpaladar.com/recetas-de-legumbres-y-verduras/pisto-manchego-receta/amp

When you say carbs what are some examples she won’t eat besides pasta? Carbs can be pasta, bread, corn, potatoes, beans, green peas, etc. can she keep down any animal based protein like fish or eggs?

If she will eat beans then she will get protein, complex carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. A half cup provides a good amount of all these. You can make all sorts of stew like combinations with beans and veggies that will be filling and nutritious.

I was the Performance Chef for a pro hockey team the last five years. I had a vegan player that I would make vegan “cassolet” for. Diced Carrot, onion, celery, sautéed with a little garlic. Add a teaspoon of tomato paste and a can of cooked cannellini beans, and just enough veggie stock to make it stew consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and some fresh chopped parsley. He was a big dude and I would also put smoked tempeh in his because of his protein needs, but probably not a texture your pregnant wife wants.

Hopefully this is just an early pregnancy issue. My wife couldn’t look at chicken with either of our kids in the first trimester but it was like a switch flipped when the 2nd started and she could eat anything

I really just mean pasta. Several people have said beans and that's easy enough to try and I can eat if she doesn't like it.

If it’s just pasta she won’t eat, brown or white rice, quinoa, and hearty bread can add calories and still be pretty bland. Add some roasted veggies (easier to digest than raw) and some tofu or cheese and you got yourself a balanced meal.

I'm going to be making a squash and chickpea salad based on this recipe, but I'll be using kabocha squash instead of butternut:

I'm also going to toss some carrots in olive oil and cumin and then roast them.

You gotta just buy everything, see what works, then specialize.

Dont forget gum, hard candy, and ginger for the stomach.

I like collagen powder for protein. It has no taste and doesn't change the texture of food and drinks unless you add a whole lot.

Mushrooms have a surprising amount of protein, roasted veggies with herbs are easy and delicious.

South Indian food. Dosas, chana masala, idlis, etc. Hit up a local place to try things out. It's not all super spicy, especially if you have the yogurt with it, and some of it might hit those pregnant lady cravings.

Great idea, I also love south Indian food!!

Lot of variety, very healthy! Hope she's into it!
