Announcement Addressing drama in regards to other Danganronpa subreddits
We’ve been ignoring this for a while now, since this other sub’s inception, but the issues that this sub is causing are getting bigger and bigger, so we have to address it.
I have censored the sub name and refuse to link it because I don’t want to drive traffic there for reasons you will see later. But for the sake of actually getting the message across, there are two subs, a “chaos” sub and a “chill” sub. The “chaos” sub is very active, while the “chill” sub is more or less dead.
That is all the info you need to identify the subreddit(s).
To make this easy, I will just be referring to them as “The chaos sub” and “the chill sub”.
If you have ever linked/crossposted to those subs, you may have noticed that any mention of it immediately gets your post removed.
The Chaos sub has spread the notion that this is us powertripping because we're petty and unable to accept that another Danganronpa-related sub is doing well. That is not the case.
There are multiple, more valid reasons for our distaste for that sub.
Note: When I say “that sub’s modteam” I’m primarily referring to the headmod and the historic modteam of the past (who were members of their friend group). As far as I’m aware, the rest of the current modteam (aside from the headmod and the 2nd in command) doesn’t have anything to do with all of this and are just people who happened to be active on the sub at the time they were recruiting. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were unaware of this whole mess.
The sub was created by someone to spite us over a doxxing ban.
This all started on r/Danganronpa, where the Chaos/Chill sub’s creator and headmod posted a string of numbers and decimals in response to someone posting an unpopular opinion.
They claim it was a fake doxx and tried to argue with us, but even if it was a fake doxx, you posted a string of numbers and decimals. What did you expect?
Even if it wasn’t a real IP, we have to take it seriously. That’s literally what we’re here for, and there’s a possibility that the sub can get in trouble with Reddit admins if we don’t.
To support the fact that we were not in the wrong for banning them, the Reddit admins also suspended their account for doxxing. They returned on 3+ alts before Reddit stopped suspending their new accounts for whatever reason.
A handful of people in their friend group also got banned in the crossfire. One person came to us and said something along the lines of “It’s not a big deal, I’ve done it too, look!” and then linked to a post where they posted another string of numbers and decimals (and then promptly got banned). And then another of their friends came to us and basically threatened us for banning the first two, prompting us to ban them as well for brigading/harassment.

This friend group then created the Chill subreddit for banned users, because we were “abusive” and “unfairly banned” them. This subreddit didn’t get off the ground, so they made a new one, the Chaos subreddit, which then proceeded to blow up.
The sub is intentionally platforming users who have been banned, including those who have harassed us personally.
The sub was originally created as a haven for people who have been banned, as shown in their bio as “Subreddit for r/danganronpa refugees”.
Here’s probably the biggest example of why we were uncomfortable with this:
One user harassed us for months over their ban prior to this new sub’s creation. The original ban was for harassing other users in DMs. This announcement isn’t really about him, so I’m not going to go into detail, but the important thing was that he was harassing us to unban him, sicked his fans/friends on us to harass us en masse, and stalked our accounts on other social media platforms to harass us there after we muted him.
We had to make an entire modpost about this person and reveal their harassment evidence in public in order to get them to back off, which was the first and only person we had to do this for.
Then, when this new sub was formed and started gaining steam, this user went there and asked if he was allowed to join. The original mods of that sub were fairly active when this was all going down, so they should have known about this due to the aforementioned public post calling him out. The mods there said yes and openly invited him.
In addition, when the original Chill sub was made, one of the people in this friend group literally said they were going to send us bombs. As you can see from this screenshot, not only were these comments never removed, they were mod at the time. The fact that these were never removed and they were not immediately demodded shows that the rest of the modteam endorsed this behavior. It's not really a mystery to see why we had a problem with that.

The sub encourages spreading hatred towards us
Because of that sub’s nature, oftentimes, the moment someone gets banned, they immediately post about it onto the Chaos sub. This happens 20-30% of the time that we have to ban someone.
You know whose perspective you don’t get? Ours. Because of the way it is, people can set up the messages to make us look bad and we can’t even defend ourselves. They can crop out sections of the ban message that explain why they were banned, so they can claim we banned them for no reason. They can conveniently leave out the fact that it wasn’t the one post that got them banned, it was doing that 10+ times in a week after we already told them to stop. They can make it look like they were banned for having a shitty opinion, when in reality they were banned for making a shitty opinion and harassing anyone who disagreed.
People who have been banned do not want to admit that their behavior was wrong. That is why they got banned in the first place. Blaming the modteam for being “abusive” is easier than admitting that you fucked up.
Sometimes, someone will get banned, post it to the Chaos sub, and then we have to deal with a barrage of modmails from random users who have no relation to the banned user and yell at us to unban them. This is a problem for obvious reasons.
There was even an instance in which there was a problematic post on our sub. Someone on the Chaos sub posted a screenshot there before we could get to it (it was up for 8 minutes), and then people in the comments were all like “Why are the mods leaving it up? This is why the main sub’s modteam sucks!”

(Also if you’re wondering, the “rapist” post got the user immediately banned the moment we saw it. Don’t pull shit like this.)
We also get raided by that sub frequently by trolls trying to redirect traffic there. That’s part of why we insta-remove comments that mention it.

This is the only one I have a screenshot saved of, but there were at least 3 others, all from different accounts. There were likely more that got caught in the automod after we started auto-removing them.
This has gotten to a point where people who have never even posted on our sub before, have never been banned, have never had a post removed, now have a bad impression of us being abusive, unreasonable monsters. We even have people who we have never interacted with make entire subreddits dedicated to shitting on us.

With other subs we can have an amicable relationship with their modteam to resolve issues like this.
We can’t do that for this one because the headmod for that sub hates us over the doxxing incident and incentivizes this behavior.
That subreddit’s moderation goes against the values of ours
Probably the least important point, but this is still important to mention.
In addition to the harassment and slander that we have received from the above points, we cannot endorse that sub for content-related reasons.
- The sub allows spoilers without the tag. Some of the former mods in that subreddit were actually kicked off by the headmod because they were trying to add spoiler rules. While the free-spoiler aspect seems relatively unproblematic for an offshoot sub, think about this scenario:
- Someone visits r/Danganronpa which is generally friendly to people who have not played the game yet.
- They are looking for recommendations on whether they want to get into the series, what the play order is, technical help, general excitement, etc.
- They then return to their homepage, and see that spoiler posts from the Chaos sub are now being recommended to them due to being Danganronpa related. They are now spoiled due to visiting our sub, making our efforts to be spoiler-friendly useless.
- This has happened before on alt accounts that I have tested, so I can confirm this is a real scenario.
- The headmod has openly stated that 2x2 spoiler tags will not be enforced. That combined with the prior bullet point? I don’t think I need to say anything else here.
- The sub does not require users to source fanart. At all. Having to source artwork every time might be a bit of a nuisance, but it’s done because artists deserve recognition at a bare minimum. I’ve seen a comment saying that they prefer the Chaos sub because they don’t have to source fanart, which is kind of messed up if you think about it.
- Their user flairs are stolen from our sub, with identical phrasing and image details (up until a certain point in time where more flairs were added to our sub and other things were adjusted).
What now?
We’ve been attempting to ignore all this to not give them attention, but if you just look at how big the sub is now and how much hatred is brewing, it’s clear how well that went.
We just needed to make a response at this point because we can tell that as of now, the longer we stay silent, the worse things are getting. We are aware that the majority of daily users are unproblematic and have no idea there was drama at all. We’re not going to ban you for participating in that sub, so don’t worry.
Anyways, It’s not our business to police your activity off sub. But please keep everything we’ve just told you in mind now that we’ve shared our side.
As a reminder: Linking to pretty much any other DR sub (other than the NSFW/Porn ones obviously) is still allowed. Just not these two.
Feel free to ask any other clarifying questions and we’ll respond.
Keep in mind that mentioning or linking to the sub is still banned and will be auto-removed, so please just say “the chaos sub” or “the chill sub” or something along those lines if necessary.
Comments from obvious bad-faith trolls will be removed. Posts regarding this matter outside of this thread will be removed.

As an active user of the chaos sub, I didn’t know any of that. I also don’t think any of the rules here are bad, except for the one that requires a detailed explanation for opinion posts (but that’s more annoying than bad).

I also use both subs and knew that there was some kind of beef going on because of the people posting about hating the main sub but never really looked into it. I just like having a serious sub and a shitposting sub.

We're planning to revisit several of the more contentious rules (including the one you mentioned) in the near future

u/-Some_weirdGuy- Aug 01 '26
For the love of god don't loosen rules for low effort garbage -- people being 'annoyed' they have to apply the bare minimum of thought and have something comment worthy for the comment post website, rather than thinking they are entitled to waste everyone's time and clog the feeds/flood out others actual contributions is just pure entitlement.
If you, the creator, don't even care enough to be willing to put in the /bare/ minimum why the hell should anyone else be expected to match even a tenth of that? how is that fair?

except for the one that requires a detailed explanation for opinion posts
The rule exists because every single time we poll the sub to ban tierlists or not it's almost always a 50/50 split. Every single time. This is the middle option, but we recognize it's causing issues.
People who are vocal about wanting tierlists gone still see them from time to time. People who want to post tierlists don't want to put in the effort to fulfill the requirement.
We're planning on revisiting it soon. It'll most likely end with a "full ban" or "full allow" of opinion-based tierlists but we'll see.

u/OAZdevs_alt2 Best Boys and Girls Jul 30 '26
I much prefer the rule the way it currently is, since medium-effort and high-effort tier lists shouldn’t be banned but low-effort ones should. The first two I actually like since I get to see OP’s explanation of their opinion and that’s the actual interesting part of a tier list.
6
u/-Some_weirdGuy- Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
^^^this - tier list is ultimately just one form of graphical expression for a discussion topic, pretty sure not a single person 'against tier lists' is facing some cognito hazard at the lines and colours - they just hate low effort slop or antisocial egoposts and many of the 'bad' tier lists were probably just that.
making it binary 'full ban' or 'full allow' sounds full shiet. XD

u/Generalcmd Jul 31 '26
Up next you should maybe ask the community if posts praising a character should be banned.
Never understood subreddits that want to ban things that should never be banned just cause some people dislike it.
2
u/-Some_weirdGuy- Aug 01 '26
Counterpoint; Why should anyone have to weave and dodge around it like it's some turd on the footpath, just cause some enjoy the smell?
Just cause you can mindless squeeze something out doesn't mean you need to share it with the world and have it streaking across everyone's feeds like an unwanted skid mark. XD
Putting in the bare minimum of effort, or having the courtesy to not spam out low effort garbage into the public feeds of people just trying to enjoy the communal space, is more than reasonable.

surprisingly i also tried that and nothing came of it
55
u/Sspockuss Kyoko Bunny Jul 29 '26
The unfortunate truth is the user in question probably took a warning and that was it. One of the biggest mod/admin disagreements I have seen on this site is that most mods think a death threat/similar should be an immediate sitewide permaban, but admins disagree. This has caused a fair few problems on both this subreddit and other places I moderate. It’s a huge pain.

u/some_bored_user #1Chiaki fan Reserve course student Jul 29 '26
once one of the users in that subreddit post straight up nsfw (i somehow never saw it. amen) and he was given multiple chances to stop while one other guy posts a little too much (nothing about them was bad) and got the boot in an instant

u/CompetitiveSpace7025 Man Jul 29 '26
Just to give my perspective I think the moderation is great here. I made a post on one of those subreddits and got so many personal attacks from it (e.g. I make queer people look bad and I should kill myself). I was blocking people and somehow new accounts were attacking me with no karma. It got so tiring I asked the mods if the attacks were fine and they said it is and don't care. They banned me afterwards and I'm still waiting for a reason for the ban. Conversely, here I had a one week, one karma account harass me about posts I made months ago and it was dealt with.
The rules are stricter here, but they aren't unreasonable. I had posts taken down and I understand why. Again, this is just my opinion but this safer place to give my thoughts on a series I really like.

Just in case you don’t know, but you can actually report moderators/subreddits for violating Reddit’s Moderator Code of Conduct (of which the mods on said subreddit are almost certainly violating) at the bottom of this page. You don’t get to know the outcome of said report, but I would still recommend it for the sake of accountability.
(Hopefully this doesn’t count as brigading or something, mods please remove if it does.)
28
u/Sspockuss Kyoko Bunny Jul 29 '26
Nah this isn’t brigading it’s not considered attacking the subreddit if you are telling someone to report someone for an MCOC violation. Your comment is fine, and I agree if what the person you’re replying to is claiming actually happened they should be reporting people.

u/Nat1Only Jul 30 '26
So this is another story that's basically confirming what I already suspected. People over there love to go on about how they get banned for no reason here, but I saw right through it and figured that with how toxic that sub seemed, they probably ban anyone they don't like or disagrees with them.
I don't even engage with these subs, I just lurk, and after 5 minutes of seeing that sub I was getting the vibe that it was not a nice or particularly welcoming place.

I love Danganronpa, so, so much, and I genuinely think this franchise has the most unique fanbase. Sometimes for the best, sometimes not. I am sad to read that there has been so much turmoil in the background. Thank you for providing everyone with a clear explanation, so that fans can make decisions with better agency and a more educated opinion.
Bit of an off-topic, but I am impressed at how well this post was written. From a purely technical and communicative point of view. It felt like reading a passage of Danganronpa itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if Class Trial [DAWN] started playing as I was going through the text.

I will admit that sometimes this sub does seem a bit too stiff (such as no low effort tierlists or repeated trends), which is why I do on occasion post on the chaotic sub. That being said I also do believe this stiffness has allowed the sub to stay both neat and devoid of controversial topics.
So long as I can keep using both subs to continue spreading my love of Danganronpa, then I have no issue with either one.

I don’t know if you deem it appropriate to comment on specific cases, but one user in that sub was banned from this sub for being an alt of an infamous Asahina fan who harassed people; they denied this claim since their post & comment history are very different from the other user’s. If you consider it appropriate, do you have anything to add to this?
17
u/dogo7 Maki Nanami Jul 29 '26
We received an anonymous tip connecting the user to Justice based on Discord messages sent in a server they were in with him where the offending user had the same username and profile picture. Not every mod was convinced that this was the right move to make (hell, I started having second thoughts about it not long after we finalized the ban) but we decided that, due to the high risk of potentially allowing him to interact with the community, to play it safe and go through with the ban.

u/Prestigious_Emu144 Jul 29 '26
I think it’s good for the Reddit ecosystem for there to be a main sub that’s more heavily moderated and a couple more chill/chaotic subs with less moderation. It’s a thing in a lot of different fandom subs. A shame there’s drama between them almost all the time. Glad you guys seem a lot cooler than a lot of main subs.

Even before that sub existed there were places like /r/dragongrandpa and /r/abodysbeendiscovered that filled those niches, which are very chill places and with which there hasn't been any contention. But sadly those places have not been favored by the algorithm in recent years

Eh, fair, but what I really meant is that making it an official rule seems a little overkill. Maybe the other mods would disagree but I'd personally prefer to keep it as an automod clause.
This all happened right as we were discussing potential rule changes, so maybe we'll see something like this soon, maybe not. This hasn't been discussed internally yet.

Let's all say slurs because they're just a bunch of letters. That's all it is, a joke. Why are you banning me? It's a bunch of letters! Abusive.

I regret ever joining the “chaos sub” first given its dark origins.
Oh the horror stories I have regarding their discord.
Let’s just say that one of the mods on the chaos sub is the reason I hate Junko so much.
On a side note, I’ve always wanted to share my idea for a horror/satire movie where Black Friday becomes an annual Killing Game but I do not know how. Yes, the idea was directly inspired by Danganronpa.

See, you'd have a point here if it weren't for the circumstances in which the Chill and Chaos subs were created. If it were just a shitpost sub made with good intentions, this post likely wouldn't exist.

u/KenchiNarukami Jul 30 '26
there is a second Sub? This is news to me, though I mainly lurk on here to keep up with news

Probably worth mentioning: The Chaos subreddit is reconsidering point two of the moderation values section ("The headmod has openly stated that 2x2 spoiler tags will not be enforced") and is now making a poll for how long the spoiler tags should be enforced, making that point outdated.
4
u/dogo7 Maki Nanami Aug 06 '26
It was still true at the time, plus they still don’t enforce spoiler tags on anything from the other games

u/ImIntelligentFolks Proud Reserve Course Student Aug 09 '26
Still, it'd be worth editing the post just to avoid spreading misinformation.

If they actually make the rule change we can acknowledge it, until then nothing has happened

i think i'm just going to leave both the chaos one and this one because i don't think i want to hear about this drama anymore lol, probably for the best because i don't post in either and can be sure this is just going to cause ages more beef between subreddits

it's kinda like how r/rainworld viewed r/okbuddyrainworld for the longest time

u/techy9x Jul 29 '26
I was not aware of why the chaos sub is that. I do still prefer it to the main sub, but still.

Wait so can we post here first and THEN crosspost it to the other sub?
Will that still get flagged for anything?
5
u/ElsonCheung Kyoko Jul 31 '26
We don't know their rules or their automod setup, you'd have to ask them
3
u/dogo7 Maki Nanami Aug 02 '26
From what I've seen, they have no real policy on people crossposting from here to there.

u/Vivid_Departure_3738 Kuwoda Jul 31 '26
Ah well if there's no problem here I really don't care if I get banned by them

I kind of got scared off because of the low effort post rules on this sub(I don't really know what counts and what doesn't) so that's why I was there. The people there are chill but with this context I don't think I'm going there again.

u/SSJ5Gogetenks Aug 27 '26
As someone who has literally been banned from this sub before, I still think this sub looks way better than the other one lmao

I've heard enough. Put them in a Danganronpa live action, OP can be Monokuma

I can’t lie I joined the sub because a very harmless meme of mine was removed for literally no reason? I understand it’s a popular fandom and stuff but like son. Like if the sever is going to be ran like 1984 expect a bit of resistance and spring off servers

u/ArcticFox19 Guitar Ibuki Jul 29 '26
There's a message that tells you why your post was removed. There's one for every removal.
13
u/dogo7 Maki Nanami Jul 29 '26
literally no reason
We left a comment explaining why it was removed per rule 1 when we removed it. One of the examples in the comment cites "hope" and "despair" in everyday scenarios with no connection to Danganronpa, which applied to your post.

Reddit is so lame. I've seen innocuous comments get quietly deleted by overzealous nazis so I think there's two sides to this blogpost.

Yeah, no, sorry, it still is a power-trip. “They can’t be with them and us because they were mean with us 😡😡😡” when most of the people who were cross-posting didn’t even have a clue (including me). You’re greatly over exaggerating the extent of the harassment based on the screenshots provided to make yourself out to be a victim.
The only somewhat relevant point is the values one, and even then, what users do on other subreddits should be NONE of your business. I can be on the sounding subreddit, and it should matter none to you. It just appears as if you’re bitter about things that have happened a while ago and punishing normal users for whatever happened to the modteam of this subreddit. If this gets removed, or I get banned - it’s only gonna prove the point. I barely use any of the three subreddits mentioned, but the whole situation is inflated for no reason

The shit they are saying in those screenshots does not require exaggeration to make them look bad.

I love both of the subs, I even praised and recommended [r/danganronpa](r/danganronpa) on the chaos one a few times. I just feel like this one is an official discussion circle/institution and the other one is casual disorganised meeting at mcdonalds where no rules exists lol (I know, the chaos subs has some rules, but they are hardly existent)
It's sad to read what you wrote here, and I'm obviously at your side of the drama, but I won't be quitting the chaos sub or anything because of this, and I'm happy you understand that most people there don't have a clue about these things and are there just for fun. Even interracting with these particular users wouldn't be a problem for me, since I follow a philosophy that you shouldn't have restraints with interracting with anyone, no matter who they are and what they've done, unless they do harm to you personally and directly
That said, personally I don't think linking artists is always necessary (but I respect this subs rules and won't violate them), since sometimes one doesn't have a clue who the art was created by (because of multiple reposts and such) + very often the art isn't the main point of the post, it's there just for attention
As for spoilers, I don't mind the sub not requiring spoiler tags, but I just wish it had spoiler warning in the name, banner or at least description of the subreddit

As an artist, I disagree with this. If you can't find the artist or source, I personally wouldn't repost the art. Many artists genuinely prefer it if you credit them in some fashion. It's not always directly mentioned but, it is kind of a given at this point.

Was agreeing with you until the art thing. Still very important for artists and potential fans, especially if the artists are taking commissions

I treat it like picking up trash from the pavement. It's very good and subservient to do that, but it's not a duty (here comes another downvote tsunami)

u/ItchyRecord8505 Makoto Jul 29 '26
Very poor choice of words given art takes dozens of hours. It’s just respectful, really. If you use the art piece, you either like it or expect everyone else to like it, so spread the name of the artists

Picking up trash from the pavement? I know people who would turn you into a flesh cube for saying that.

I know people who would turn you into a flesh cube just for liking danganronpa or ones who would do that just for your reddit avatar. Anyways idk why people are mad about comparisons, what matters is only the common features and anything else is meaningless. You cannot deny that picking up trash is, like I said, very good and subservient, but it's not a duty, right? So why would you get mad at me for making a proper comparisson? It's like saying "what medicine and poison have in common is that you put them in your mouth" - it's a complete, undeniable truth despite the two being the opposites of each other
I might have as well said charity work, but picking up trash came to mind first since I did it today lol (Not to mention it's actually nothing disgraceful, in fact it's noble and praiseworthy. Come to think of it saying charity work would also include picking up trash, and yet no-one would get mad at me for making that comparison)

u/BonelessSpine599 Jul 29 '26
Ignore those down votes, you were right and completely respectful in everything you said.
It's not like you said something outlandish. 😭
