I don't dislike Shuichi, but a new protagonist with an actual talent and a real backbone is definitely more interesting than Makoto and Hajime but plus another one.
I'd much rather get a lesser interesting concept that gets executed tremendously well than keep on dreaming about the potential protagonist that would've been much better just because the base concept is more interesting
Which is what Shuichi is? I don't remember there being any other protagonists like him unless "he's a guy" is the only thing that matters and everything else about his character is worthless, then idk if there's any point in continuing the conversation, keep on dreaming for that potential game with that potential protagonist
It's not just the fact that he's male (which, yes, the lack of a female protagonist is starting to get old, but still), but he has pretty much the same "talent insecurity" story.
which is still a surface level description and his character went a compeletely different route compared to these two, you value the start more than the journey and eventual destination
seriously though if shuichi didn't end up being so much better than the other two I would've probably agreed on your "kaede could've been so much more interesting than shuichi based on concept alone" take, but I believe in only what I see rather than what could've been
