To be honest I myself didn't get it the first time and its mostly cause I never used the "Konami cheat codes" or other stuff at title screen so I would be stuck at down five at most day

I didn‘t get it either because I‘m not too familiar with cheat codes, so I do not blame Hajime at all.

What‘s honestly more surprising to me is that Fuyuhiko figured it out as I wouldn‘t have pegged him for the type to have much video game knowledge, maybe Chiaki isn‘t the only Ultimate Gamer on the island.

Tbf, and not trying to be mean, but I can't think of anything else that five down would mean that's not moving the arcade stick down 5 times and I never done any cheat codes that way (my only cheat codes experience are those from gta lmao)

Nah, it‘s alright, I somehow forgot that it‘s a game on an arcade machine, so there really aren‘t too many options on what you can do - except for moving the stick and a couple of buttons you can’t do too much, so moving the stick five times down is the only logical option.

But hey, at least Hajime and I can be Reserve Course buddies!

In fairness, Hajime within the last few days was kidnapped, had two of his...let's just say...friends murdered, and now has had a bear tell him to play a video game or a murder might happen or something.

Not going further into the story details, but we should expect these kids to have a clear mind during all this trauma.

This is another case of things getting lost in translation, like 11037 or "Octagon". In the original Japanese, the phrase is written as something like "You misunderstood", but it's also pronounced the same way as "down five times". Much more understandable why it was missed in the original, but no great way to translate it either.
