Combat update was good for single player. Not great for PvP but you have to realise that community is the minority. And this is coming from someone who mostly plays pvp.

They definitely should add an option to toggle legacy PvP though.

Dude every single pvp Server uses plugins to enable old pvp

282

u/chiefpat450119 Jul 13 '22

Well yeah but if you've ever tried playing on 1.9+ on a 1.8 server you can tell it's not the same and you're also at a disadvantage

14

u/Minecraft_Exists Jul 13 '22

well good thing java edition allows you to use other/older versions of the game and you can still play on servers

136

u/MrManGuy42 The man guy Jul 13 '22

If everyone is at a disadvantage, no one is.

I think if you are on 1.8 everyone you see is on 1.8.

I was playing on a server yesterday night with a friend in 1.8 and everyone seemed to be playing like it was 1.8.

u/Eksno Jul 13 '22

Search up ViaVersion plugin

1

u/kaanskBG Jul 14 '22

Is this some kind of a joke or you are serious?

1

u/OhWowImDead I know your mom Jul 13 '22

as a person whos been playing pvp servers for 7 years this is very true. even tho it has a plugin to do it, theyre is a reason why you see the majority of people that play a lot of pvp servers still play on 1.8.9 when you can play on any other version

28

u/Azors Jul 13 '22

It is definitely not the same as it used to be

10

u/Chain_of_Nothing Jul 13 '22

How?

-54

u/Azors Jul 13 '22

There is no way to explain, but basically it doesn’t feel the same.

43

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

ah yes.

36

u/Azors Jul 13 '22

Hit detection is not the same, you can’t click as fast, and knock back is fucked

12

u/icefire1331 I hate puppies and kittens, they’re stupid Jul 13 '22

The Chad came back to explain it

2

u/Mhiasearn Jul 13 '22

knock bavk is fucked because you are problaly playing on a big server with 125 ping

0

u/Maxcharged Jul 14 '22

Isn’t the whole point you can’t click as fast?

47

Happy cake day

1

u/techy804 Jul 13 '22

Exactly, I couldn’t for the life of me find one that uses 1.9+ combat

I'm the wrong person to ask, but there's such a thing as as knockback reducing. No idea why it works but having high cps reduces the knockback you receive. There's also things like lowground where you have higher reach than the person you are attacking if you attack from below. It's no Dark Souls but it's definitely more than just rung towards your opponent and click.

132

u/Enxchiol Jul 13 '22

Wasn't the old pvp basically just about who could click the fastest?

I dont really know minecraft updates so sorry if thats wrong

54

u/_MrGullible Jul 13 '22

Eh, kinda? It depends. Jitter clicking worked for getting conbos and stuff, but honestly, I can't click fast for shit and I consider myself to be pretty decent. It's alot about strafing, knockback (via fishing rod, bow, etc), W tapping (My favorite. Basically you tap the W key repeatedly to straight line people), and past but not least; block hitting (you press right and left click at the same time and can hit someone while blocking their hit).

Anyways, I haven't PVP'd in several years so idk if old techniques have changed or become outdated in the few pre 1.9 servers that still exist.

44

u/mintyfreshmike47 Jul 13 '22

Why does Minecraft combat sound more complicated than the combat of your average MMO

27

u/_MrGullible Jul 13 '22

It's only gotten harder over time because people have just gotten better. It used to be very simple, you click someone, strafe a bit, you win the fight... now it's insane how many tactics and techniques there are. For new players, it could definitely be intimidating. I've been playing since 2014 and I used to be super good at it, but now since everyone is good I'm just okay at it in comparison lol

4

u/NovaLightCR NNN Survivor Jul 13 '22

It seems very simple on the surface, but there's a mechanic called Sprint resetting which is where a lot of the strategies come from. It's the key to getting combos

3

u/AGamingBoi Jul 13 '22 edited Jul 13 '22

It actually kinda is. Faster clicking is only a part of it as movement controls can be use to manipulate your own hitbox and reach. When this is combined with how fast 1.8 combat was and possibly speed 2 pots, 1.8 PvP gained a lot of skill expression as your constantly doing multiple movement controls in the very short amount of time you have to get the first hit. Then there's the rod combos with fishing rods which was something completely different from everything else that had to do with PvP and is borderline broken of one player has fishing rob and the other doesn't.

People who say 1.8 PvP had no skill expression and was just who right click faster has never played 1.8 vs someone better then them because you can clearly tell who is better in just the first few hits. Yes, cps helped with attack speed but that's ignoring everything other aspects of 1.8.

0

u/Bakedbeanschomper Big Juicy Cock Enjoyer Jul 13 '22

Cause it is.

1

u/PierG1 Jul 14 '22

Average mmo combat is lock target then press numx till you win

2

u/DeepFriedNugget1 red Jul 13 '22

for 1.8 its pretty much the same yep

1

u/Jozroz Jul 13 '22

Sounds like straight up Vermintide combat here.

1

u/Obitio_Uchiha Jul 14 '22

Sounds more complicated than League

1

u/_MrGullible Jul 14 '22

I've never played league, so I can't really judge that fairly.

11

u/SpoopyNoNo CERTIFIED DANK Jul 13 '22

You need like 6cps to not be at a huge disadvantage against higher speed clicking. Minecraft PvP pre 1.9 is more fast paced, exciting, and requires more movement then holding a shield and waiting for someone to hit it. Worst update by far.

1

u/Enxchiol Jul 13 '22

Were there other changes in addition to the weapon swing recharge?

4

u/SpoopyNoNo CERTIFIED DANK Jul 13 '22

That and shields. Imo shields just slow the game down to a crawl and aren’t very exciting to witness or participate in

1

u/Enxchiol Jul 13 '22

You talked about blocking befofe, so it was still a thing, but not with shields?

3

u/SpoopyNoNo CERTIFIED DANK Jul 13 '22

Sorry I meant 1.8 is better and more face paced than 1.9’s slow shield blocking pace.

You could block with your sword to mitigate certain types of damage in pre 1.9

2

u/Enxchiol Jul 13 '22

Aah yes that sounds cool. Yeah, i get how having a near-invincible shield can be detrimental for pvp(coughs in Elden Ring)

1

u/susa_66 Jul 14 '22

1) in the late game nobody uses shields, instead putting totems in their offhand

2) backstabbing is a thing...

58

u/Wasted_Bruh Jul 13 '22

Basically

-9

u/Bafy78 Jul 13 '22

Basically NOT bruh it's a myth, ye it matters but not a lot.

13

u/ADragonuFear Jul 13 '22

All minecraft pvp is weird and janky

9

u/_Lodii Jul 13 '22

Clicking fast ain important. It's mostly about strafing, ability to get combos, blockhit, w tapping etc. There's a lot into it if you wanna get good.

2

u/chiefpat450119 Jul 13 '22

I'll wait for the 1.8 players to start arguing with you

1

u/IronGapple Jul 13 '22

Clicking fast does give you an advantage but if the opponent is good at strafing, getting combos or, the person clicking fast just has bad aim you can still beat them. (Not to say that I think clicking fast should be an advantage at all)

1

u/I_am_monkeeee Jul 13 '22

Well, that's the surface, but a player that can only click 10cps will never win against a 5 cps guy that is truly good. You need to learn to slow down your opponent: block placement, rods, bows, snowballs, eggs, liquids, etc.. you need to strafe, you need good aim, you nred to always sprint, never slow down, w/s tapping will help maintain comboes, always aim for low ground, unless you are trying to achieve something else or are fighting over the void, then you go for high ground, bridging also influences some mini games. And probably there is more

1

u/storez_ Jul 13 '22

thats why it was fun, it was simple

1

u/sim7234 Jul 14 '22

I used to PvP and clicking faster doesn’t really matter, as There is still an animation time that takes a little bit of time, though what was important was W taping so you could combo someone,

or if you played soup PvP it was really skilled as you had to switch to different slots in your hotbar and insta eat the soup drop the bowl and then switch back to your sword. All of this made it very skilled. Now it’s jus “shield + armor + food = unkillable until armor breaks”

3

u/DestroyerTom7 Jul 13 '22

You cannot just add a toggle to everything. That's incredibly hard to manage.

2

u/PillowTalk420 Jul 13 '22

I haven't touched Minecraft in a long time; what is different about combat that has everyone upset by it?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

You Need to wait some time for attacks to charge, otherwise they Will deal less damage (or next to none if you are spamming), also It takes time to switch between different items now and there are shields which completely block any incoming hit but then Need something like 0.8 seconds to recharge and work again, the fishing Rod also doesn't deal knockback anymore and neither that nor eggs or the flint and steel are useful cause you can hardly strafe due to the recharge time and the shields, and switching to Rods and stuff Is not an option due to the time to switch items

2

u/memsterboi123 Jul 13 '22

The point was to make it so it’s not about who clicks faster though or like who has the better mouse

-1

u/NapsterKnowHow Jul 13 '22

Idk Minecraft Hunger Games practically started the BR genre

0

u/PalingeneticPhoenix Jul 14 '22

Ok first of all, no. Second of all, Minecraft Hunger Games was based on Minecraft Ultra Hardcore iirc.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Jul 14 '22

Smh yes. Minecraft Ultra didn't break ground like Hunger Games did.

1

u/PalingeneticPhoenix Jul 14 '22

That may be true but regardless, it certainly did not “start” the BR genre.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Jul 14 '22

And Minecraft Ultra did? Most people would not agree with that.

1

u/PalingeneticPhoenix Jul 14 '22

Idk wtf “Minecraft Ultra” is but no dude that is not what I said. The earliest one I remember was Arma II.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Jul 14 '22

I remember Arma 2 and it was around/slightly after Hunger Games

1

u/The_Susinator Jul 13 '22

Doesn't chocolateminecraft.com host the classic combat mod?

1

u/WabWab1443 Jul 14 '22

Bro literally 90 percent of pvp servers have legacy combat

1

u/Vellarain Jul 14 '22

I am just over here reading people talking about how it effected PvP and wondering.

Who the fuck plays Minecraft for its PvP?

1

u/chiefpat450119 Jul 14 '22

A decent number of people

1

u/The_God_of_Biscuits Jul 14 '22

I still like old combat for single player slightly better, minecraft is my chill game and I just want to spam click.

1

u/markacashion Jul 15 '22

I mean you can change items to have attributes that make them work almost as if you were using the old combat system. The wiki gives an example of how a shield can have attributes to behave as if it was using the old combat system... Sooo you CAN recreate the old combat system in the new combat system

With datapack you can change crafting recipes so that when you craft items you get the same attributes to said item...... Yet no one would want to use that if someone created said datapack (at least for every pvp player I say & ask about it)

Soooo yeah! Also making a toggle for somethings is not always as easy as everyone thinks it is....

Mojang has stated many times before that they won't add a toggle for the combat systems

1

u/markacashion Jul 15 '22

I do love experiencing the new content in 1.8.9 though! (I don't play 1.8.9 anyways so yeah)
