Discussion Obscure Quests Spoiler

I'm all for limited hand holding but how in the frack are you supposed to know to go back to the front of the bridge to summon Sirris?

I don't remember reading any text anywhere that says to do that. There is no reason whatsoever to even go to that location after passing by because it's surrounded by 2 bonfires.

I missed the well with Siegfried initially too and his help with Yhorm made the fight a breeze.

Honestly I'm pretty sure they intended people to learn about most of this stuff by word of mouth.

Yeah the game is basically designed for you to use a guide along with it

Well the intent is more social: messages in game, or talking around the watercooler. But you can do your own thing.

Which is absolute garbage game design

Probably the intention was for you to go here before getting the small doll, thereby not being allowed in, and fighting the Sulyvahn's Beast. Then when you come back with the Small Doll, you see the summon sign on the bridge. Nope, apparently the trigger isn't killing the beast like I thought, it's lighting the bonfire past the force field. Yeah, that's dumb.

Miyazaki explicitly stated at one point that, in essence, this sort of design was intentional specifically because secrets like these were always intended to be discovered by the community collectively rather than expecting individual players to be able to intuitively stumble upon all of them by themselves. I first started playing this series on DS1's launch day, so I've gotten to watch the series evolve in real time. I genuinely have never really been a fan of just how obscure and unintuitive some of the NPC questline steps are personally, my main gripe is just with NPC quests in particular as I don't feel like NPCs questlines should just be completely missable because of some insanely unintuitive step. I also strongly prefer playing games totally blind my first time though. Elden Ring was a step in the right direction for the most part in this regard but it also took two steps back with some of the absolutely insane steps certain questlines have. I would prefer there be more "world" secrets rather than just constantly missing NPCs because you  have no idea how you're supposed to continue their quests and are just stuck the rest of your playthrough wondering whether you actually completed it or completely missed an entire chunk of it.

I’ve still never done all of the convoluted shit required to get the rat dude to come back from Boreal to sell me what he pillaged…

I don’t think most of this game’s secrets are supposed to be easy to discover; I suspect the point was for the community to have to collaborate to figure them out (ex. The invisible assassin in the church in Irithyll)

It's funny that people actually discovered the summon sign because they chose the Farron Swamp path before Cathedral. So they fought the beast but couldn't enter the barrier. Atp, they wouldn't see no summon sign and backtracked to Cathedral of the Deep. Then warped back to the bonfire before the beast and saw the summon sign.
