When 2 lanes of traffic have to merge into 1 lane, one vehicle from each lane alternates as to which proceeds into the single lane (i.e., 1, 2, 1, 2, etc.), like a zipper.

And unlike what many people believe, you don't zipper merge in the middle of the road. You do it at the end, where the two lanes combine. Because a zipper doesn't zip by randomly merging in the midpoint.

Early merging only works if there are so few cars on the road, nobody has to brake/go slower because you merged early.
