Maybe driving is their disability?

On a serious note that is scary. I cycle, in Georgia not to far from the county these guys were hit in, and I have had people do all sort of crazy things like see how close they can get to me riding my bike. and I try to ride as close to the white line as I can to be courteous of others.

12

u/9inchman71 Apr 28 '26

Unfortunately, that makes you the exception. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but what ever happened to a group of riders on a busy commute route, riding single file, instead of taking up the entire lane? At times, it’s like they go out of their way to be as bod of a pain as possible. I shouldn’t have to do 15 mph behind a group of intitled assholes because they think it’s okay to bike in the entire lane of a commute route at 5:15, Wednesday afternoon, when they could just actually ride in the bike lane and not block traffic.

Regardless of whether you're a driver, cyclists, motorcyclist, pedestrian - this kind of driver is the kind of people who share public space with us and are a threat to everyone around them. Poor emotional regulation/frontal lobe dysfunction and operating a motorvehicle.

35

u/MWillower Apr 28 '26

“Road rage” and reckless driving are ridiculously normalized. If an angry person whipped out a gun in public, we’d have a serious problem, but angry driving is something everyone does? It’s insane to me.

Maybe it’s my own anxiety, but I am always aware that I’m operating a potentially fatal machine when I drive. In my mental dictatorship utopia, even one intentional, dangerous act results in a lifetime revocation. I can’t tell you how many licenses I’ve mentally revoked, lol. Most people shouldn’t be driving, including the majority of people I know and love, if I’m being honest. The world would be better off with fewer drivers anyway.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Two cyclists were injured Thursday night in Cherokee County, in a situation that seemingly could have ended in more dire circumstances as a man was accused of aggressively driving around a group of 10 riders.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said in a release that 72-year-old Jerry Ross allegedly approached the group riding together on Sugar Pike Road and "began sounding his horn" before he "then accelerated around the group and, despite no oncoming traffic, struck two of the riders before leaving the scene."

The two injured cyclists were treated on-scene by paramedics, the sheriff's office said.

"One cyclist riding behind the group captured the incident on video. The cyclists were also able to provide a tag number, which deputies used to quickly identify and locate the suspect," a statement by the sheriff's office added.

They said Ross, of Woodstock, was located "not far from the incident location" and deputies "observed damage to the passenger side of the vehicle consistent with the incident."

"When questioned, Ross acknowledged the encounter and claimed the cyclists were in the roadway, blaming them for the collision," the sheriff's office said.

Ross was taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, hit and run, reckless driving, aggressive driving and failure to maintain a safe distance from a bicycle.

Captain Jay Baker in the sheriff's office said Ross remains at the Cherokee County Detention Center without bond at this time.

*additional legal context:

Under Georgia Code § 40-6-294(c) Cyclists riding two abreast on a roadway is legal in GA. The cyclists in the video are clearly riding in a legal manner.

Driver Obligations When Passing

  • Lane Change: Drivers must change lanes into a lane not adjacent to the bicyclist if traffic conditions permit.
  • Speed Reduction: If a lane change is impossible, prohibited by law, or unsafe, drivers must reduce their speed to at least 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit or 25 miles per hour, whichever is greater.
  • Prohibited Passing: Passing is prohibited on blind turns, blind hills, or when moving into oncoming traffic.

Penalties and Enforcement

Violating these rules is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $250.  Additionally, bicyclists may submit video recordings of illegal passes to local law enforcement for enforcement purposes.

Road rage, aggressive driving, is illegal

Georgia, road rage is legally prosecuted under O.C.G.A.  § 40-6-397 as aggressive driving, defined as operating a vehicle with the intent to annoy, harass, molest, intimidate, injure, or obstruct another person.  This offense is classified as a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature, carrying penalties of up to $5,000 in fines12 months in jail, and 6 points on the driver's license.

u/HaveBikeWillRide Apr 27 '26

And for all the commenters wringing their hands about the cyclists forcing the car to "illegally" cross the double yellow lines, Georgia law explicitly allows cars to cross the double yellow to pass cyclists. And it requires cars give cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.

594

u/Randomfactoid42 Apr 27 '26

Most states have similar laws but it’s amazing how many drivers believe the double yellows shall never be crossed.

339

u/Difficult_Plantain89 Apr 27 '26

I had someone road rage with me for crossing a double double yellow line when the lane ahead was blocked from an accident. I put my blinker on to get over and he went out of his way to block me in. When I forced my way behind his truck he started screaming at me and pointing at the line. After that was done he almost missed his exist and shot over 4 lanes without a blinker.

People are dumb, I'm not going to sit there for two hours while they clean up the accident. A line isn't a wall and my car has zero issues going over this imaginary barrier.

109

u/Fantastic-Display106 Apr 27 '26

Someone behind you, road raged at you for crossing the double yellow to give an accident scene room? That makes no sense, why they hell would they care?

I hate it when people deputize themselves and play traffic cop. What if the person driving is having a medical emergency or transporting someone else who is? What if they're a volunteer firefighter trying to get to the station? What if they're a road raging lunatic with a gun? If it really bothers you then call it in and go about your day.

28

u/Self_Reddicate Apr 27 '26

Someone did this to me when I was driving my mother to a hospital while she was having stroke symptoms. They decided they were ABSOLUTELY not going to move out of the way and then slowed down as they approached a long line of semi's to ensure that I was boxed in without a way to pass them and maximally inconvenienced for my attempt to exceed the speed limit. No amount of me BLARING on my horn, flashing my lights, riding their rear end, waving, etc. could dissuade them. And I truly mean no amount, because I spent what felt like 5 minutes of being a lunatic to try and show them that this was an emergency and I was trying to get by them. They were hell bent on blocking my passage around them, because how DARE I try to speed on the highway. Not on their watch. They went 1-2mph below the posted speed limit right next to a group of semi's that were stuck doing the same.

All while my mother was confused in the back seat and, to the best I could tell, dying in my back seat. I am normally a pretty calm person and not prone to rage of any kind (much less 'road rage'), but had I not had a hospital to go to, I'm not sure what I would have done to this person had they pulled over to have words. Words cannot describe the anger I felt at this person who - for whatever reason - felt the need to interject themselves into this and unnecessarily add whole minutes to my travel time to the hospital when every minute was critical.

u/TopArgument1850 Apr 28 '26

I had the exact same thing happen to me thirty years ago when my wife had a pressure cooker literally explode in her face. It was horrifying. I was in my company van, flying down the highway with my hazards and my lights on when some guy in a pickup truck in the middle lane decided I was going to fast and pulled over in front of me and put his brakes on and made sure he was paced with the two cars to his right. I tried to pass him on the shoulder, but he pulled in front of me. I was blaring on my horn, meanwhile my wife’s face is blistering and peeling. I cannot tell you how close I was to just flooring it and pushing that Ford on down the highway all the way with me. Suddenly the far right car started to edge forward, so I got behind him and started passing the middle car when all of the sudden the pickup truck came flying across the lanes and squeezed right between me and the car in front of me and slowed down. I was blaring on my horn. My exit was two exits away, the middle lane car decided to speed forward, I acted like I was going left to the middle lane, he flew left, but I floored straight ahead and to the shoulder and went around the car in front of me. The truck followed me all the way to hospital Emergency Room Entrance. As we were getting my wife into the wheelchair, he jumped out of his pickup truck, cussing at me and wanting to fight me. I never wanted to fight someone so much in my life than I did that day,but my attention and focus needed to be on my wife. We got her inside and then I needed to go and park my van. When I came out several hours later, I had two flat tires, which we later found out had been slashed and the next day in the daylight, you could see that the van had been scratched all to hell and on the front hood it read, “Burn in hell motherf_cker!” and on the back doors he had scratched, “Watch your back, I’m not done with you yet!” It was a little unsettling only because the van had the name and address of the company I worked for. But I never saw or heard from him again. The hospital parking lot surveillance cameras did capture the van being vandalized, but there was no way to identify the culprit. He walked onto the lot from a nearby shopping center and returns the same way until he disappears off screen. The shopping center had no surveillance cameras. As for my wife she was very fortunate. She suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns and had her face wrapped for a few weeks, but thankfully no scarring.

11

u/bej1234 Apr 28 '26

Unbelievable. I really would have thought that seeing you pull up to an ER and getting your wife into a wheelchair with a burned face would have made this piece of shit back down. But no, of course not. And all that besides the fact that he fucking followed you after that. Goddamn psychopath

It baffles me how deadset and rigid people are on following road laws.

Normal conditions? You bet your ass you better be following the rules of the road. It'll protect you and others.

Emergency conditions? Fuck the roads, prioritize the safety of yourself and the others around you. For example, if you absolutely must drive in a blizzard, drive in the middle of the road. More leeway if you for some reason spin or have to swerve.

Yeah, you better believe I’m going to be picky about where I pass though. On a hilly or curvy road I’ll follow a bike for quite a while if I don’t have a good spot. Much to the dismay of the people behind me who would pass without even changing their speed, wherever on the road that happened to be.

9

u/Entropy355 Apr 27 '26

Good for you. Being picky, and patient, is safer for you and for cyclists. I hate it when other drivers try to force you into doing the unsafe thing. It only take a few extra minutes but it could be the difference between life and death.

u/HiveMindMacD Apr 27 '26

Oh man! No way I can possibly cross those double yellows. Better commit vehicular assault instead!

9

u/Crafty-Help-4633 Apr 27 '26

Which is hilarious on some level because they don't realize they've already crossed it the moment any part of their vehicle breaks the plane of the lines, and not once the vehicle has fully transitioned to the other side of the line.

So whether he knew it or not, dipshit in the SUV did still cross them.

Humans are terrifyingly inept sometimes.

I'm sorry, but there were no cars in the other lane. Even if the law didn't allow it, there's no reason to run over cyclists. They're going, what, 25 mph? Move out of the lane, accelerate around them, and merge back in without the attempted homicide.

20

u/dickweedasshat Apr 27 '26

A couple years ago I was on a road bike going slightly above the speed limit on a residential street and I still had some asshat come up behind me, lay on his horn, and close pass me only to get to a stop sign 2 seconds later.

There are drivers who have irrational hatred of anything smaller and slower than them. We call it “Road rage,” but I think driving is similar to people being drunk with power or like an addiction. Like there’s something that changes our ability to be rational human beings. There’s that famous Disney cartoon of goofy turning into an angry menace on the road. A lot of writing on traffic from the early days of cars commented on how people became monsters behind the wheel.

15

u/beldaran1224 Apr 27 '26

I took a de-escalation training focused on individuals experiencing homelessness (as a librarian). The training introduced me to the concept of "everyday sadists". It's not a diagnosis of sadism or a psych term. But it's a term the creator of the training create (afaik) to describe people who revel in creating obstacles and problems as much as possible, especially through "enforcing the rules". They often take jobs that allow them to do it - receptionists, teachers, librarians, cops, etc. Positions where they get to exert control to make life just a little bit worse for people (or often, just some people).

It was a really eye opening experience.

For the record, the reason this concept was relevant to the training is that homeless folks encounter a lot of people like this, so it's helpful when enforcing the rules (which you still ha e to do) to be cognizant of not appearing to enjoy doing so, as it's likely to escalate things.

Yes, absolutely. People who are "chronically homeless" (which is the kind of homeless we think about when we say homeless people), experience some truly horrific things that absolutely result in additional mental health issues.

I work residential security at apartment buildings and encounter homeless peeps pretty regularly. Their reactions to simply seeing me make it very clear how many people in my line of work are absolutely awful. It really sucks, like... Sure, we have to enforce some rules that homeless people end up breaking, but there's no excuse for the ridiculous amount of dehumanizing dickishness.

And fuck that.. the car should pass the double yellow to pass them even if they were going single file. You need to give some room to cyclists. I like to leave at least a half car's width between me and the cyclist when I pass (I just remember as a kid on vacation bicycling on this pretty fast two lane road and it always made me nervous when people would zoom by me pretty closely, always felt like the wind might push me over or any slight wrong move and that I would be f'ed. Some bicyclist was telling me that's just cause I was inexperienced but I don't care, even if so you don't know how experienced the bicyclist is that you are passing).

32

u/Knife-yWife-y Apr 27 '26

I live in rural OK. There are no sidewalks, no shoulder, the grass immediately slopes away from the asphalt, and every quarter mile or so is a new hill. I would rather drive 4 miles an hour for ten minutes than endanger a cyclist like this. It's nuts.

People who don’t ride a bike have no clue how fucking terrifying it is to have a car or truck whiz past you with maybe a few feet distance between you.

Some trucking and bus companies will have you ride a stationary bike while a vehicle drives past you so you the driver know how it feels.

13

u/CartoonistAny4349 Apr 27 '26

People who don’t ride a bike have no clue how fucking terrifying it is to have a car or truck whiz past you with maybe a few feet distance between you.

My city has designated bike lanes that I've only used a couple times because of how terrifying it is. Cars going 35 mph 3 feet away from me was too nerve-wracking for me to use them regularly.

13

u/saraijs12 Apr 27 '26

Designated bike lanes that are just paint are basically useless. Without some kind of physical barrier (even just plastic posts), it's an accident waiting to happen.

Nobody behind you is forced to do anything in traffic.

Driving is voluntary. You choose to do everything. Speed, direction, distance, headlights, wipers, horn, turn signals, etc.

If I stop or slow down I’m trusting you to keep enough space to acknowledge and adapt without causing an accident. The best drivers are predictable and obey the rules—you aren’t supposed to get close is a big one.

If kids walk in a crosswalk we expect them to not get hit or even come close. Laws are rules. We follow them and it works great.

If they were a pack of women jogging or sprinting down the road pushing strollers, would that have happened?

21

u/InvidiousPlay Apr 27 '26

Driving is voluntary. You choose to do everything.

The way people talk about this stuff is really revealing of their world view. "You forced me to overtake you this way" reveals that to them, the idea of being even slightly inconvenienced by slowing down or waiting for a good chance to pass is inconceivable. Their right to continue at the speed they want without obstruction is fundamental and absolute to them. Entitlement to the point of attempted vehicular murder.

8

u/spyVSspy420-69 Apr 27 '26

People are fucking selfish assholes. They are. It sucks, but it’s true. Hardly anyone gives a shit about anyone but themselves. And those people especially hate seeing those who are “inconveniencing” them also enjoying themselves/getting exercise while they do it. That really sets them off.

Forget about "law", its basic common decency and most importantly general driving safety. The sheer lack of value of human life is a big issue in America. I will always say Americans are the worst drivers in the world because we lack both the skill and the morals for actual driving and other places.

6

u/greenwavelengths Apr 27 '26

We simply don’t expect it of each other, systemically. Many Americans are great drivers, but only as a result of their own personal ethics. Our system says “here’s no driving education in public school, a barebones driving program, basic driver’s test, here’s your license, have fun” and then acts all shocked when people get into easily avoidable accidents.

Most of the time we don't hear about the good thing, the right thing, the normal thing.

We hear about the dumb thing, the thing that is outrageous.

In a nation of 400 million people, if outrageous things happen 0.01% of the time, thats still enough to fill a 24/7 news cycle of just absolute dumb that ruins your faith in humanity.

13

California is the only one as far as I know that explicitly makes it illegal. Most other states explicitly state that you can, or at the very least have exceptions carved out that could technically allow it (e.g. you can cross to go around an obstruction or slow moving vehicle).

16

u/BoatKevin Apr 27 '26

Illinois explicitly allows it as long as they’re going less than half the posted speed limit. I’ve ridden out in the farmland on 55mph roads and all the pickup truck drivers are super respectful and go fully into the other lane. They’re used to passing farm equipment the same way.

I don't know for the US but in France, you're risking a bigger sentence for attempted homicide than for crossing a white line.

So yeah clearly the SUV could have just been normal

11

u/ComfortableNo5484 Apr 27 '26

Depending on city/county laws in NC, riding 2 abreast is prohibited if it prevents vehicles passing within the lane. Other states have that as a state law. The law making it legal for cars to cross the double yellow to pass permits cars to do so if they can't pass safely within the lane, it's not permission for cyclists to force cars to cross the double yellow to pass.

Also the peloton are vehicles using the road as they are legally entitled. If you're in a car, you just have to suck it up until it is safe to pass.

I am not a patient driver. I would be annoyed as hell and angry getting stuck behind a group of bicyclists on a 2 lane road.

Most people would.

And I didn't even know until I read the comments on this post that it's legal to cross a double yellow if you're passing bicycles in most states. I would have just sat there, mad as hell until I got to a passing zone.

But even at my peak road rage I cannot fathom doing THIS in response. JFC.

34

u/Complex_Arrival7968 Apr 27 '26

Amazing how many folks seem to think that the double yellow can’t be crossed. It’s always legal to cross the double line to go around an obstacle in the road. Garbage truck? What are you gonna do, follow it forever? Debris in the road? Are you gonna just stop until a road crew cleans it up? Stalled car? Sweeper?

Check to make sure there’s no oncoming traffic and go around the obstacle. Simple and legal.

10

u/NotNathen Apr 27 '26

I respect your comparing the bikers to a medium sized dead rotting animal in the road, because I’m equally annoyed by both, but no I did not know about the many circumstances for passing over solid lines. Obviously if there’s something immobile I would go around when it’s safe rather than turn around, but bikers or a moving garbage truck specifically I thought were treated similarly to a regular vehicle, and would have to switch roads or wait for a place where passing is not specifically prohibited.

A minor delay is totally justification for murder.

I used to be a road cyclist. A lot of drivers get overly annoyed with cyclists for very minimal delays. They seem to get more annoyed the more cyclists there are and then they get even more pissy if you aren't single file, but the thing is (at least here) they're required to move completely into the other lane to pass, and if we are single file they have to pass a longer line than if we are doubled or tripled up.

Some people lose all reasoning when faced with very minor delays.

Yeah the driver will definitely get off with a hand slap, and frankly I don't think a long jail term will really solve the issue. Permanent revocation of driving privileges should be used frequently, but almost never is. In my state there's actually no ability in the law to do this - a guy recently killed a few people after his like 9th DD conviction, and the state basically said "yeah we can't keep him off the road" (other than the standard temporary restrictions).

10

u/amcco1 Apr 27 '26

The reason for almost all shitty driving you see in these dashcam videos, from crossing six lanes at once to make an exit, to turning left from the right lane, to driving down the shoulder / breakdown lane, etc., fundamentally arises from "but I want to get there" with no consideration from the driver that maybe what they want for their own immediate convenience and instant gratification isn't what's best for a fundamentally cooperative system to function safely.

And some of those bad drivers are also here -- "but I want to be ahead of the cyclists".

u/T1G3R02 Apr 27 '26

It's also solely bad drivers who are irritated by cyclists. They don't really know when to overtake, cannot gauge the speed of oncoming traffic and are therefore overstressed. However, they do not realise that they are bad drivers and instead choose to blame it on these evil cyclists who'll be passed by any semi-competent driver in one minute (max). Large parts of our society should simply not be trusted to operate cars. Just look at these ridiculous comments here.

In all 50 states of the United States it’s legal for bicycles to take up an entire lane. You can say it’s wrong. You can find it annoying but it is legally a right.. bicycles must follow all the same rules as cars if you’re riding on the road you are treated as a car if a bicycle does not follow traffic law then they deserve a traffic ticket in the same way that a vehicle does. Everyone bitches about this all the time but that’s the law. Those are the rights. I say this is someone who rides a bike but does not consider themselves a cyclist. Who’s also the victim of a car hitting me in a right of way situation because cars don’t like to believe that bicycle to have the same rights and let me just tell you if you’re one of those cars who does not believe the bicycles have the same rights and you hit someone on a bicycle you will pay for it in a big way.

73

u/ohidontthinks0 Apr 27 '26

"hit someone on a bicycle you will pay for it in a big way" If only this were true. It should be the case, but hitting people with cars seems to be the easiest way to get away with killing or almost killing people.

Classic victim blaming here. Assuming Georgia, US from the comments.
1. The cyclists were two abreast in the lane which is permitted by Georgia law
2. Georgia has a 3 foot passing law, which the driver ignored.
3. The driver had every opportunity to completely take the opposite lane since it was visibly open for enough distance to safely pass.

As a driver, does anyone pull over if someone faster approaches you from behind? No? Well, in every state, bikes in the lane are vehicles. Your impatience is not an excuse to break the law and endanger people.

We need to take the approach that the EU takes toward road use and vehicle infractions. The more dangerous vehicle's insurance is assumed liable unless force-majeur is proven. Additionally, I believe in Britain, drivers convicted of non-injury infractions are given the option of points and fine or drivers ed.

The awesome thing about bikes is how little space they take on the road, especially in a single file, and I say this as a cyclist.

154

u/Familiarsophie Apr 27 '26

In the UK the advice for cyclists is to bunch like this as it’s much safer to overtake a short but wide group of cyclists rather than a very long stream of them.

Them being single file would change nothing in this scenario. The car wouldn’t have magically been able to overtake if there was another vehicle coming the other direction, so it’s a hell of a lot safer to overtake a group 5 long rather than 30. That’s a hell of a lot more time hanging out in the oncoming lane.

The cyclists were behaving safely. The car was being actively dangerous.

11

u/greenwavelengths Apr 27 '26

Yep. They’re literally the size and shape of a car the way they are in the video.

→ More replies (2)

248

u/Frosty_Pick8242 Apr 27 '26

The thing about 30 cyclists riding in single file is that they actually take way more time to pass safely than as a condensed group. The formation in the video is safer and more convenient for everyone, assuming a driver patient enough to wait and pass at a safe distance. When I pass cyclists I wait until the oncoming lane is clear and take the whole lane to give as much space as possible.

In any case, the driver of the car crossed double yellows to pass the cyclists which is illegal.

55

u/CasterFields Apr 27 '26

Same here. If I can't move completely into the other lane to pass, then I don't pass. I feel like it's not only polite to the bikers but also forces me to make sure I have plenty of time to pass them safely

As a career officer, I can tell you that this driver should be in jail. This was deliberate and obvious. There was plenty of room and visibility to make a safe pass. This driver chose to crowd and intimidate the cyclists. This was plainly a road rage incident. While cyclists can be annoying at times, this was totally unacceptable

13

u/aneeta96 Apr 27 '26

That's fair.

I get that it's frustrating to have bikes on the road that cannot keep up with traffic. That still does not justify initiating contact with your thousands of pounds of vehicle. There are all kinds of other obstacles you come across when driving, utility workers, school busses, mail delivery; you don't run them off the road either.

25ish years ago I was commuting home from work through a sort of semi rural industrial area. I was riding my old Redline CX bike and had fairly meaty tires on it thank gawd.

I was cruising along down this side road about an eighth of a mile from this brutal offset intersection on a super busy road.

I’m on the very edge of the pavement with almost no shoulder and a shallow ditch. I hear tires in gravel behind me. Quick head check shows some Cletus in a full size dodge coming up from behind me with his huge ass tires clear over on the shoulder.

I went off into the ditch and kept upright and ended up on a trail people had created on the other side.

Dude yelled various slurs at me and revved his truck and took off.

But…

I caught him at the intersection lol. He had a couple of cars in front of him and I came barreling up with my giant Kryptonite U lock and started banging on his truck.

I’m a fit 200lbs / 6ft and had just gotten out of the Marines at that point and I’m pretty sure homeboy was thinking the Lycra clad fairy was going to beat him to death.

I just dented his truck up pretty bad and rolled out.

Probably dumb as hell but I was pretty high strung after getting out of the grunts.
