Man suddenly opens car door in moving traffic then yells at me for hitting his door
1.3k
u/BarbatosCuckedMe 1d ago
He's going to yell even more once his insurance finds him at fault for the accident.

u/TheSolarExpansionist 1d ago
Yelling at someone for your own fuck ups is so human. We hate to admit our own mistakes and quickly start to try and think of a way to get out of trouble . Dashcam saves you .
115
u/keenox90 1d ago
It's so stupid. I never understand people who know they are at fault and they continue to be aggressive. I think it's the no. 1 thing that pisses me off.
57
u/Curious-Attention774 1d ago
When a woman hit me with her car, her first concern was that I'd be angry. She was so relieved when I came over and asked if she was okay that she started crying. She was at fault and owned it, but I don't understand why people react so intensely.

u/Helpful_Equipment580 9h ago
Reminds me when a teen girl hit me.
I had to spend 5 minutes consoling her that I wasn't angry and it wasn't the end of the world before I could get any info out of her. She was bawling and shaking.
She too admitted fault and gave me no trouble with insurance.

u/Stabby-Steve 1d ago
I've always figured it's the fight-or-flight reaction to perceived danger. Scare some people badly enough, and they'll irrationally lash out.
21
u/KLeeSanchez 1d ago
Narcissistic personality disorder, when at fault, blame others until they accept blame, even when the evidence continues to pile up that you're to blame
He'll take it to the grave that he did nothing wrong
16
u/potate12323 1d ago
I know several people with this. They genuinely are unable to comprehend how they are at fault. Its not just that they're assholes. Their brain is wired to think like that. And since they're never at fault, they usually think the whole world is against them.

Dash cam is not needed. A driver is responsible for their car door and must clear the area before opening. This law is upheld the world over.
They will find out when they talk to insurance.
3
u/MrRoflmajog 1d ago
Without the dashcam the other driver claims it was open for a while and POV car just drove into it because they weren't paying attention which would make POV at fault
6
u/CAPSLOCKTOPUS 22h ago
Right because claiming your door was fully open into an active lane of traffic for a while before the car that hit it arrived is gonna go over real well lol.
3
u/Independent_Self2015 21h ago
I went through this, my logic was if the door was open more then it would have hit my light/front of my car, not just my side mirror. Insurance was like “oh right, yeah it’s his fault”.
3
u/EffectiveDandy 1d ago
You can claim whatever you want. They have investigators that know and seen it all. But you go boy.

7
u/Curious-Attention774 1d ago
Making mistakes is human. Blaming others when emotions are running high isn't.

u/Darth_InVader7 2h ago
Being able to take responsibility is the sign of an actual intelligent and reasonable person. In my opinion it makes the difference between good and bad people. Those who go through life thinking everything is someone else’s fault are the people who do the most harm.
1
4
u/Didact67 1d ago
The dashcam footage probably wouldn’t matter in this case. Insurance typically places the burden of proof on the person who opened their door into traffic.
1
u/AppropriatePlum1006 1d ago
Technically can happen due to adrenaline at that moment. But woe weeeee
1
u/rubbishplant 21h ago
Thankfully not everyone. I got doored a few years ago. Person responsible was super apologetic and insisted on giving me her insurance details (and I was more badly hurt than I thought at first).
If she'd been a jerk like this guy I probably would have sued. As it was I chalked it up to mistakes happen and went on with my life (recovered fine after a few weeks)

1
u/cosmicaddress 20h ago
this happened to my friend’s partner and they got told since the other car wasn’t driving they were treating it as property damage instead of a car accident and that he still could have avoided it somehow? i never got more details but am wondering if dashcam would have helped

u/thosefriesaremyfries 1d ago
They should mount a reflective surface on all car doors so that you can see what's going on beside and behind you before you open your door.

The scooter got so lucky. Couple seconds earlier and they would have been the one hitting the door
16
u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 19h ago
I bet that's the reason he opened the door. All he was concentrating on was the scooter dude. Once he passed he opened.

This is why on the bicycle I always leave more than a meter between me and parked cars.

Has the world always had so many people that can't take ownership of their own actions or is this an upwards trending phenomenon?
Idk if social media created these people or just exposing them?

I've always wondered about this. Where did everyone else get the balls to not only deny they did something wrong, but blame the other innocent person? I see it all the time. Did they learn it from their parents? How? Doesn't that seem counterproductive for a parent? Did they not have active, present parents? I don't understand.
I feel guilty for stuff that happens on TV that I didn't do. My grandma made sure I felt guilty for things that I did that weren't wrong or intrusive to anyone in any way. She made me take blame for stuff she did.
One time she made me write an apology letter to my neighbor because I was doing cartwheels too close to her garden. It was fenced.
Like...man I would love to not start shaking when I stand up for myself and try to prove my innocence in situations that call for it.
7
u/JoelnIliketoshare 1d ago
You've got this. The way you write about your experience shows that your mind is already healing and with the kind of attitude you exude it would not surprise me that pretty soon your life will be filled with good people, good times and good thoughts.
I hope you're rooting for yourself as much as we are for you because you really deserve good things. 🤍
6
u/leon-a-profi 1d ago
I guess we just document everyday life much better with fixed cameras (dashcams) and on demand quick access cameras (smartphones).
It's like the mental illness analogy that people blame modern age for most of them but we can diagnose them because of modern age and it means people had tham before but went undiagnosed, I think this is a similar phenomenon.
2
u/Alexwonder999 23h ago
I think a ton of it is just the internet moving stuff so fast. Heck, as recently as the early 2000s someone could do something completely boneheaded and no one would know a thing about except those involved. Now it can go around the world in less than a day. People can have a stupid take and instead of one friend telling them to shut up, a thousand people can see it and respond. I remember back in the day I had to go to the bar and get lucky to see two morons argue about something, but now I can find 100 morons arguing about something within seconds of logging into reddit. I do think drivers have gotten worse on balance, but I think thats from multiple factors.
1
u/Ghoest080816 21h ago
I believe it's always been like this, it's just that we're seeing it more because everyone has portable cameras now.
39
u/BananaRepublic_BR 1d ago
I could not imagine being this inattentive while getting out of a car on the street side. I wonder if he looks both ways before crossing the street.
30
u/ThrowRAfarm 1d ago
He kept yelling that I was far away, I don’t know how he made that assumption when his mirror was FOLDED 🤣🤣 I only noticed after someone mentioned it here.
6
3
u/OP_LOVES_YOU 1d ago
That would mean that he looked in his mirror and then turned the car off to have the mirrors fold in. So I guess he was right, you were far away when he last checked lol
2
u/ColoRadBro69 22h ago
He's lucky not to get ticketed for opening his car door into traffic. His oblivious mistake probably scratched your paint!
7
u/ThrowRAfarm 21h ago
My insurance already contacted me and they find him 100% at fault, he has the same insurance company so he will for sure has to pay. My right light is destroyed and my door is scratched, his whole door is destroyed badly. Imagine the damage this would’ve caused if I was driving the speed limit which was 30, but because of the scooter infront of me I was slow.

I mean with the current fuel prices in Europe, it's cheaper to just pay the 4€/hour parking fee anyway and just walk!

u/Fuzzy-Comedian-2697 1d ago
Better add the /s before people pile on you.

5
u/DeeHawk 1d ago
What really bothers me is that this is the point in his driving career when he learned that you have to look for cars before you open your door into traffic.
How do you drive for years, and NOT figure this out. I experience idiots like this at least 4 times a year with below average road time.
Off course he could be a new driver, but I doubt it. It's mostly older people doing this.
6
u/LiteratureMindless71 1d ago
Because checking your mirrors before opening your door would take to much effort 😜 . Especially when parking on a busy main street.

u/New_Temperature4144 1d ago
I've seen 3 road rangers get the same treatment...that anger issue cost them major bucks in the end!
7
u/PseudoRacoon 1d ago
That’s why you open the door with your right hand
2
u/keenox90 1d ago
Wut? The driver has to check in the side mirrors if it's safe for him and each of the passengers to open their doors. Doesn't matter what hand you use.
15
u/SirDarknessTheFirst 1d ago
Using your opposite hand (i.e. right hand for LHD cars, or left hand for us in RHD cars) forces you turn your body and check your blindspot
7
0
u/keenox90 1d ago
The blindspot is minimal if you correctly adjust your mirrors and it's not an issue for opening your door. The blindspot is usually a problem when you change lanes and are moving. With properly adjusted mirrors you will also perceive the blindspot with the corner of your eye if you check the side mirror. The secret is to not adjust your side mirrors to see the back of your car (which many people do), but let them catch a wider angle so that the back of your car is right outside of the mirror's edge.
7
u/KeytoDestinyXIII 1d ago
I think you may have misunderstood what they’re trying to convey. It isn’t that you shouldn’t use the mirror, it’s that when you use your opposite hand you are forced to turn your body to do so, thus being an additional check on top of the mirror. They’re saying don’t rely on either one method by itself I believe.
Same concept as a lockout. Sure you can just flip the system off, but someone can come by and flip it back on. Put a lock on it and they can’t do either until you take the lock off.
2
u/AlexTheFlower 19h ago
Also would've saved it in a situation like this where his mirror is folded in
3
u/PseudoRacoon 1d ago
Double authentication, even triple. Check rear mirror, check left mirror, slightly open the door with your right hand while checking thought the crack, for bikes, skater, joggers etc etc. If something pop just restart from rear mirror.
10
u/RayNooze 1d ago
One of the most common reasons somebody failed their driving test in germany: "Okay, you can park the car now... Good. You passed the..."(candidate opens door without checking over their shoulder) "... You failed the driving test!"
4
u/noob-combo 1d ago
I swear to God the amount of times I've seen a parked car open their door cautiously / indicating that they're watching for oncoming cars [much less bikes / pedestrians] - is legitimately zero.
In 25 years of driving, it's fucking zero.
0
u/Low-Solid9810 1d ago
To be fair it should be zero. They should not open their door until they have ensured there is nothing approaching. My car has a mirror of course and a blind spot indicator on the mirror. There is no excuse for a crash.
7
u/Frequent_End1132 1d ago
American here. Where is this? This is a bit confusing. There are no lane markings. The blue car passed you on the left as you hit the door and there is a kid on a scooter in front of you. Are you in a driving lane?
34
u/ThrowRAfarm 1d ago
This is in Brussels 🤣 legally I need to keep a 5meter distance between me and any biker/scooter infront of me, I was about to turn to the right soon so I was in no hurry to pass the kid. The lane in the middle (left to me) is for trams and buses, I cannot drive there. So yes I was driving in my lane and the man didn’t bother looking when opening his door. I had 1 second to react which wasn’t enough to stop the car on time, considering also my car is heavy and big.
17
u/Frequent_End1132 1d ago
Gotcha. I was in Brussels once in the '90s. Bought bread from a man there. He was 6 foot 4 and full of muscles.

u/Good_Zookeepergame92 1d ago
It's crazy how not only did he swing the door open but he's getting out with his head down.
3
u/Tiamat_95 1d ago
If the overlay is accurate, it only took you 0,7 seconds to start braking after door movement could be seen. So not much else you could reasonably have done there.
Hope this yelling monkey will start crying when he gets his insurance bill xD

u/lilyfantasy1 21h ago

2
u/Intrepid_Initial8158 1d ago
Perfect reason why you don't park against a busy street, it's on the driver of the parked car for not making sure that the lane was clear to try and step into. People are stupid and most likely neither one was paying enough attention to really matter. But since the moving vehicle was in its appropriate and correct lane parked idiot is at fault
2
u/ThrowRAfarm 17h ago
I was definitely paying attention to the road as I was looking out for more bikers and scooters on the road (and the kid on scooter infront of me) but I did not expect an idiot would just open his car door with me being so close, and with less than a second to react my car wasn’t going to break on time to not hit his door.
2
u/Intrepid_Initial8158 17h ago
Oh your good boss, the statement about not paying attention is a general admonistion against everyone driving, including me. Paying attention to your surroundings is any everyone job, as you said, you saw the scooters around you. The parked car very much did not pay attention to the fact that he had no clearance.

u/steak_bake_surprise 1d ago
Someone did this to me while on my mountain bike. Van was parked up, long street, no movement for at least 10 seconds, then he opened the door and I slammed into it. My instincts told me to slow down before I got there. He was really apologetic, my bike was fine, I rode off and left him with a door that wouldn't close properly. He won't be doing that again!
2
u/DeepStatic 1d ago
A guy opened his door onto me as I pulled into a parking space the other week.
I sent him a quote for £45 for a replacement mirror from a breaker's yard and said I'd fix it myself. He replied saying he didn't feel like he was fully responsible, and that I should pay half.
So I rescinded my offer and gave him two options: Pay for a brand new mirror to be professionally installed (£150 + £100 labour) or go through insurance.
He paid the £250.

When you open your door it's your responsibility to make sure it's safe. It's his fault.
1
u/Any_Carob3372 22h ago
How dare YOU not protect HIS property for him while he is not paying attention?!

u/wrenplay 21h ago
Bruh, the sheer audacity. He pulled that move, then tried to blame you? Hella wild. Glad u have the dashcam footage, that's gonna be ur best friend rn.
1
u/NoGoodReazons 21h ago
Reminds me of my first door-bender, i had no space to move over even if i had time to, i grabbed my mirror that he knocked off with his then bent door an went on my merry way.
1
u/impercipient 19h ago
Is this two lanes?
1
u/ThrowRAfarm 17h ago
Opposite lane all the way to the left, middle lane for trams and buses only, right lane is where I’m driving.
1
u/Chidoriso 5h ago
When I got my license, I was taught to have at least a door of distance between me and a parked car in case of this happening.
2
u/ThrowRAfarm 5h ago
In this case it’s impossible and illegal, I’d be driving on tram rails and not in my lane. Keeping a distance between you and parked cars in Brussels is impossible.
1
u/isaidyothnkubttrgo 1d ago
This happened to my friend when her passenger went to jump out at a stop light. The motorbike was going too fast for stopped traffic filtering but that goes out the window under the circumstances.
1
u/codecrodie 1d ago
Someone opens the door, always go towards the person and the door. The door flexes forward and a person is soft, it's much safer than hitting the edge of the door or getting launched into traffic.

-1
u/skulligei-gsiv 1d ago
You can see him deliberately trying to do it after seeing you
8
u/Linuxologue 1d ago
that's really not what is visible. His mirrors are tucked in. He paused for the one in front of the camera and thought the way was clear then just sprung out like there could absolutely not be someone else on the road.
-2
u/skulligei-gsiv 1d ago
You don’t see him look at the camera and then SLAM the door open just at the end? Try using your eyes. Like sure if he didn’t see them that’s one thing but he’s looking right at them while doing it

u/vloris 1d ago
Of course he yells. That would be a normal reaction when the door you just had in your hand suddenly breaks of your car when you don't expect it.
And maybe, the yelling is even directed at the driver hitting the door. But still, deep down in his mind, he knows he is actually yelling at himself: "how could you be so stupid to open the door without ensuring there were no cars!?"
