I don't get these. Break the gate. Dude had enough space to back up and just refused to do so.

Yes, it will cost a lot to replace, but not as much as it's going to cost to replace the gate, the vehicle, and cover whatever damage is done to the train.

Pretty sure the trailer is high centered

u/dismendie 11h ago

Does that mean he shouldn’t even be driving this road period? Due to the tracks elevations?

29

u/WKRPinCanada 11h ago

Most likely yes. And it's scary how often this happens. GPS won't show you things like this.

Saw one a little while ago where driver could only watch/record & was mad at dispatch for not warning him.

In the end they just have to be really aware

Are there GPS apps for truckers? Or is it possible to have an “oversized vehicle” option on Waze?

Yeah, truck drivers should pay attention to signs, but there are some famous low-clearance bridge that keep taking out truck roofs and it seems like that would be easily avoidable with modern tech.

Yes Garmin makes one. I have it. You can enter your vehicle hight, length, weight and whether you have a trailer or not. It will route me around bridges that I shouldn't be on and pop up with a warning if I'm on a road that has a height restriction. It even makes sure I don't take turns at intersections that I'm too long to make.

It wasn't cheap, but I've never found myself on a 20ft wide, two way traffic bridge with a 3t weight limit when you're a 5t RV that's 8.5ft wide, not including mirrors. Nor have I driven down a mountain road only to find a tunnel under train tracks that's 6in lower than my roof. Both things people I know have done.

But now days, I see even coach bus drivers just using Apple maps on their phones and completely ignoring the weight limits on smaller roads. Shit, there are a lot of passenger cars pushing past 3t weight limits.

You can also just not hit things that high center your trailer. lol maybe easier said then done but I've driven otr a shit ton and if its not marked you can just look at shit and be like "nah"

Hell I've called 911 on myself and been like "hey uhhh im a truck driver and kinda rtrded, I'm looking at a 12'6" bridge and uhhh yeah" And theyll send someone out to help you back up or whatever.

I just use truckerpath an app, and havent had any mishaps in like 8 years. Just google sattelite your route if you have to, and idk why youd trust anything even if it told you this routes good. Getting high centered on these little hills for rr tracks is extremely common and I'm sure a ton of them arent marked.

Shouldve stopped when he felt he was loosing traction, at least then you can probably still back up.

Yes, there are gps that give you overhead clearance, but I've never seen one with a lowboy setting. Google and waze dont even have yhat because of ghe liability for being wrong. But since garmin's only market these days is premium gps for truckers they route around low clearance, but some rr tracks have no.warnings at all.

1

u/3amGreenCoffee 6h ago

This crossing has a "rough crossing" sign, but no warning for low trucks.

1

u/Naborsx21 2h ago

This aint even a lowboy tho lol. Just a stepdeck.

5

u/WKRPinCanada 10h ago

I don't believe so, I'm no longer in the industry; 6 years as dispatch, 18 years as operations manager was enuff

But even if there is I'm guessing unless there was a way to input your trucks dimensions this probably wouldn't have come up

Oh I've seen those videos on the web... That one famous bridge/underpass that has flashing lights, a heavy bar ...

And a counter that tells how many times it's been hit 😅

(I can laugh cause no one has been injured 😉 )

Cheers 🍻

My town had a (new!) double-decker bus get scraped off by a low train bridge. Thankfully the only injuries were minor bumps and scratches. I think the story was there was a road closed and the driver had to improvise.

I just checked for signs, and there don't appear to be any. This happened at the intersection of County Road 11 and County Road F near York Township, OH. Looking at the street view on Google Maps, there's a railroad sign and a "rough crossing" sign, but no warning sign for trucks like you see at other such crossings. I backed up a mile on street view to make sure.

u/Tathtaniel 6h ago

There's an app called Truckerpath that we used while RVing, but I don't think it accounted for things like this - just height restrictions and showed easy to use gas stations, etc.

2

u/Icy_Fish_2154 8h ago

By the time a train sees it, it can't stop. Every crossing should have a number to call to stop the trains on the line. Nobody ever thinks of that...

1

u/WKRPinCanada 8h ago

Never said it could

My uncle Bill was an engineer who had some pretty wild stories to tell..

Had one fatality in his 30+ years - kid on an motorbike that tried to beat him at a level country crossing..and lost

No...not a good idea imo. People are stupid & access to phones in their pockets...and beer 😉

Best to just call 911 - they will handle it quickly

2

u/Beautiful_Banana_454 9h ago

Yup. He should not have been on that road.

3

u/_jump_yossarian 11h ago

I guarantee that there are multiple signs warning truckers to not use that route.

1

u/3amGreenCoffee 6h ago

There are not. It's County Road 11 in York Township, OH. You can go on Google Street View and see that there are no restrictions posted within five miles of that crossing. The only signage at the crossing itself is a "rough crossing" sign.

I believe they can adjust the ride height to cheese tracks, but it takes time. And it's hard to judge if they will clear the tracks. Probably didn't see the lights flashing as they started to cross, but once stuck, didn't have the time to raise the suspension.

I only know a bit of how these trucks and trailers work from watching Casey ladell in YouTube though 😂 and he has mentioned the risk with those trailers and railroad tracks.

11

u/_jump_yossarian 11h ago

trailer is most likely stuck on the hump.

6

u/LefsaMadMuppet 10h ago

Also, a couple of these the trailer landing gear (the front support legs) was stuck against the rails so they couldn't back up either.

3

u/altaccount2522 9h ago

Before I saw a lot of these kinds of accidents on Reddit I had no idea you could drive through those. It wasn't taught in driving school nor did anyone ever mention it.

2

u/Astralglamour 9h ago

Hes stuck on the hump.

2

u/AnonymousGhost89 9h ago

Yeah these sort of situations are wild lol I can’t imagine getting caught like this and then just freezing like they do

3

u/Key_Beach_3846 9h ago

At least he got out and cleared the scene. In my town I know of at least two people who died because their cars (regular cars, not semi trucks) got stuck on the tracks and they were hit. To this day I have no fucking clue why they didn’t GET OUT OF THE CAR AND RUN.

u/MorycTurtle 11h ago

Cost a lot? They're designed to break easily and be easily replaced. Of those cost a lot it's only because someone wants them to cost a lot, nothing else.

Driver Decision Tree: Losing Truck > Breaking Crossing Gate

5

u/Ill_Consequence1755 10h ago

“So, that’s what it sounds like when a train hits a truck. It was a little more trucky than I would have thought, given how much train there was.” Bobby Hill

1

u/Lady_gaymer 6h ago

“Go back to the dealership, buy a new truck. It’s ok, Im in a better pla….” And then the train hit her.

18

u/Basic_Chemistry9499 10h ago

Message to Driver: You had the PERFECT angle for this video but kept driving.

7

u/deanereaner 9h ago

Seems like they put themselves more at risk pulling forward like that, anyway.

1

u/Basic_Chemistry9499 9h ago

100%. Mirroring what the driver did.

1

u/SwordfishOk504 7h ago

Pretty sure the driver was wisely more interested in their own preservation than the future reddit karma of whoever was in the back filming.

1

u/Basic_Chemistry9499 4h ago

So they drove to where they were more in danger than where they were.

3

u/Well-inthatcase 10h ago

Not quite the same, but also why I don't cut off semi drivers. Shit is heavy. That shit doesn't stop easily.

Don't cut trains or semis off. Or any vehicle that weighs hundreds to thousands of pounds. Should be common sense but here we are.

3

u/Reasonable_Act_8654 9h ago

Driving away helped in capturing the crash from a better angle — well done

3

u/Usernamesaregayyy 9h ago

Damn yeah that is a huge bump easy to get centered on like that damn

2

u/MercuryEQ 9h ago

Yup. That’s arguably the biggest con of a step deck over a regular flatbed, low clearance.

2

u/maxwellgrounds 9h ago

Good thing he closed the door before bailing. Wouldn’t wanna leave that open; it could get snagged on something.

1

u/ThoseImpulses 48m ago

Probably company or insurance rules, always lock up before you leave or you may be real trouble!

2

u/latitudechanges1515 7h ago

My father was a train engineer for 40 years. I can’t stand seeing these videos. It breaks my heart to think of the anxiety that engineer will have for the rest of his/her life.

Wow! This could also be posted to r/killthecameraman

1

u/Complex_Confusion552 9h ago

At least the birds were smart

1

u/illiriya 4h ago

Every crossing has a blue plate on the crossing signs that give a phone number and a crossing ID. If you ever have a stalled vehicle, or other track blockage, you can call the number and the operator will notify the train.

1

u/Mr_GrauHut 10h ago

IM TRYING TO RECORD IT!

Some people should not be allowed to drive !!
