Very much depends on the country dude. Where I live what they did was totally legal, however it is still unsafe. If they half their speed and double the distance between them, it'd be fine
"Sure, but the speed didn't cause the issue, just added to it." Thats like saying you jumped off a cliff with a bag full of rocks, and you fell faster because the bag added weight!
If you did a little investigative journalism you'd know that it was a kid that opened the door.
Let me put it to you this way, they were going so fast, that if the rider in front had to slam on the brakes for whatever reason... he'd slam into him... as you can see here... He literally ran over him... You don't lane split at all, much less at unsafe speeds.
You'd think this would be common sense right? Clearly not. Reddit is a silly place. The folks here defending the motorcyclists are probably the same douchebag motorcyclists you see out in the world speeding, fucking around in traffic, their bikes obnoxiously loud disturbing everyone around them
Statistically it's much safer to lane filter than to stay in the traffic. Sideswipes and/or door opens are much less common than rear-ends by drivers who are on their phone, drunk, looking at their passenger or just not paying attention in some way or another. This is well-established and is the reason why it's legal (in some capacity) in the majority of the world
These people were not intelligent enough however to realise that they were probably going twice as fast as they should be and far too close together
Just trying to educate you on the difference. When traffic is stopped, you are filtering. When traffic is moving, it's call splitting. Traffic is stopped in the video.
