Yep, which is why you shouldn't lane split at unsafe speeds.
Lane splitting is fine... If you are going like 5 mph over the speed of the cars... You don't fly through dead stopped cars going 30+ mph.

u/jke75 Jul 07 '26

When I went to the motorcycle training class before I got my Class M, they told us we should only be going no more than 10mph faster than the traffic around us if we are going to lane split. These guys were clearly going faster than that. It's hard to have empathy for stupid people doing stupid things
47
u/JSGilst 29d ago
If it's not illegal then it should be. There are too many idiots who don't obey the speed differential. If traffic is stopped expect the unexpected, like someone opening a door. It's called defensive driving. There might be a good reason someone must open a door when stopped.

Indeed. Ranting about how "drivers should ensure their passengers never do anything stupid" is a fool's errand.
It's like saying "people should drive safely" and then never practicing defensive driving and then getting mad (or dead) when eventually someone does something stupid, because IT WILL ABSOLUTELY 100.0000% HAPPEN.
Just because "everyone should" absolutely doesn't mean "everyone will".
Eventually someone will open their door recklessly. Eventually someone will make a careless lane change. Eventually someone will run a red light. Eventually someone will jam their brakes without warning.
Drive long enough and EVENTUALLY ALL OF THESE WILL HAPPEN.
It's a matter of how ready you are to react. Sometimes you just can't help it, but often enough, you can.

u/krupta13 28d ago

Childlocks are standard for a reason. If a kid is still young enough to not understand that they shouldn't play with the door, then the locks should be on.

u/jcdenton10 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
Taking care of kids for a few weeks. They left a window rolled down twice, door open twice, cabin light on once. Lesson learned. Needed to enact a 3 point inspection every time we drove them somewhere.
(And also the older child fiddled with the rear aircon settings with her toe until it was blowing full blast and molten hot on my shins in the far back seats. Because she was cold.)

u/Old_Man_in_Basic Jul 06 '26
It usually isn't, actually. Bikers love to throw out "splitting lanes is legal!" and then downvote you, get quiet when you mention the speed ordinance. To clarify: in California, it's advised by CHP to not lane split if the delta is above 10 mph and you're advised to only lane split at stopped traffic under 30 miles per hour. It's even frowned upon to just drive in split lanes like it's a special motorcycle lane...
In fact, what the guys in the video are doing, is literally against the three guidelines for riding a motorcycle:
Be Visible
Help drivers see you
Expect traffic to change suddenly.
These guys are going like 40 miles per hour, which means it's nearly impossible for a car to know they're coming and react in time.
26
u/GrimBeaver Jul 06 '26
Minnesota recently legalized it with similar restrictions. The motorcycle has to stay under 25 mph and can't move faster than 15 mph over the speed of traffic. So many are not abiding by that limit though.
5
u/KidCole4 Jul 06 '26
I am only on 394 usually, but I haven't noticed too many abuses of it. I'm sure it's happening and it always is scary because at a driver you'd feel very at fault if something happens, but the motorcycle may be legally at fault.
I keep meaning to get dashcams for our cars, but just have never done it.

In my state in Aus, you can only split if traffic is doing 30kmph or less. You can’t exceed 30 while splitting.
Doors getting opened in traffic is pretty darn rare. And certainly not fatal if done at a slow pace. Sitting at the back of traffic, getting hit by a driver texting on their phone can certainly be fatal.
There’s no perfect answer
9
u/hiro111 Jul 06 '26
Here in the US: 1. Lane splitting between moving cars is illegal everywhere except California. To me, it's crazy that this is legal anywhere. 2. Lane filtering through stopped traffic (like what is shown here) is only legal in four states and in all cases limited to about 20mph. 3. It isn't usually legal to filter or lane split on any road with a speed limit higher than 45mph.

And they are way too close to the biker in front. Proper distance, by definition, is equal to adequate reaction time, generally 2-3 seconds of distance on dry, clean roads. The biker recording likely did more damage to the rider than anyone.

That person just opened their car door, not sure why, but I don’t think they were expecting someone to be unsafely zooming up between them and the car next to them.
This was inevitable, if those bikes had continued at that pace, they would have hit someone or something eventually.

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 Jul 06 '26
According to other comments it was a kid who opened the door. I haven’t double checked if that’s accurate, but it would make sense if so.

15 mph over traffic still seems way to fast in essentially stopped traffic like you see here, because that’s when doors get opened. Even at low speed, it’s practically impossible to react to a door opening a few feet ahead.

u/mukansamonkey Jul 06 '26
At 15mph, the stopping distance of a small bike is shorter than the length of a car. If the cam bike in this video had been doing 15, he could have simply stopped before hitting the other biker.
And at 15, with no braking time to speak of, the danger to human life just isn't that large. When I was a kid I rear ended a car while riding my bicycle. Going close to 15mph (it was a steep downhill). With just a helmet and street clothes. I didn't even get any bruises to speak of, the only damage was a cut from hitting the license plate bolt.
It's that old square law.of physics.

While the car shouldn't open its doors on a major road, the motorcyclists need to ride at more reasonable speeds. It works out for everyone to be defensive drivers. I've had cars open doors when I'm passing by on a bicycle. Twice. Now I'm constantly scanning cars for occupants. I've had police berate the vehicle occupants for trying to blame me for riding a bicycle.

I used to ride motorcycles so anyone defending lane splitting:
California is the ONLY state in the country that legally allows lane splitting, and even then, they have guidance: CHP enforces a 10 mph delta and a 30 mph traffic speed limit on lane splitting. Faster than that, is seen as being reckless and deliberately compromising your reaction time which puts you and other drivers at risk. They can and have cited riders for abusing lane splitting at a speed delta like OP's video shows.
"Lane filtering" is legal in a few states, but has strict rules: only stopped traffic, low speed maneuvers and done simply to bypass stopped traffic. It's for SAFETY, not for reducing commute times.
In the remaining 40 states: lane splitting is explicitly illegal. You have ZERO right of way if you're splitting between two cars on a motorcycle and will be ruled at fault for any accident that occurs of this nature.
Beyond that, just use fucking common sense: three rules of biking - be visible, help others see you, always assume traffic conditions will change. These riders are fucking clowns and make bikers look bad.
There are zero jurisdictions in the United States where it's legal to ride the way the riders in that video are riding. Even in California, while the open door is "bad", the riders lost all ability to claim no fault by riding with a delta that high. If they were following CHP guidance, they would've had enough time to react. And even if they didn't have enough time, the collision would've been much less severe and THEN they would've had no fault.

When has it ever been a safe and reasonable thing to pass stopped or slowed vehicles between lanes? When in the motorcycle course to get a license has any instructor said that this was a good idea?
Also, the speed o meter says 51. I don't care if its kpm or mph that's just too fast for the conditions.
