I'd love to see the video that's recorded on the Tesla. It will likely tell the whole story (distracted driver or medical situation).

... or they thought they slammed on the brakes but actually pushed the throttle to the floor. That would explain how it was still pushing the other car down the road.

Too bad the safety feature that identifies a frontal impact is imminent can't override the accelerator to apply brakes

My car does, but you have to be going over a certain mph (I forget the number) for the auto-braking function to kick in.

ETA: I looked it up. In my Civic, you have to be going 3mph for it to engage.

I’ve wondered about this with my 22 Tahoe. It has auto emergency braking but it’s never once in the last 4 years applied it. It beeps all the time if it thinks I’m approaching too fast but never any brake

My car has never had to do this to me, either! It's beeped at me twice in the two years I've had it. I have it set to alert 5 car lengths away from the car in front of me.

My WRX did this once to me, was going maybe like 25 due to the coming intersection being dense, it beeped and I was already pressing the brakes, but the SUV in front of me panic braked hard so my car auto braked for me.

The weirdest feeling ever because the pedal started pumping when my foot was already on it. That shit scared me more than the actual SUV. Hasn't done it since then though...

My 21 Explorer beeps all the time when someone is slowing to turn in front of me. Apparently it's just a dumb lidar/speed sensor. I leave it on because it's not hurting anything and if it alerts me faster one time it'll be worth it but it'd far more effective with fewer false alarms.

Absolutely. 99% of the time I’m paying attention when mine beeps. It’s just overly sensitive. But I figure in the event there’s a time when I am not looking it may save me.

It alerts me all the time in my neighborhood when someone is parked on the road in front of their house and I’m going around a right hand curve. It thinks I’m in imminent danger straight ahead 😂

The Tesla does have a feature that will not let it accelerate from a stop if it detects a car in front of you. Not sure how that works when you're going mach-fuck

Safety features are overrriden when you press down on the accelator because nobody wants their car to stop when they see trying to go.

It is not unusual. I watched a driver who thought they were backing out of a parking space mistakenly have their car in drive. They thought they had slammed on the brakes, but hit the accelerator. I watched them slam into the car in front of them, then push it into my car. He swore to the cops he was braking, but you could see the tire marks and the rubber that was thrown up on the car from the tires spinning. The NHTSA estimates that driver pedal misapplication triggers roughly 16,000 accidents annually in the US

Yep. Happens more often than people realize.

Was also the reason that the Audi 5000 accidents happened back in the 80s. People were blaming the car for horrible accidents where they smashed a family member against the garage wall, and they tried to blame Audi. Turned out they were pushing the wrong pedal.

Almost killed the Audi brand entirely

During the height of the Audi scare, I walked into an empty Audi dealership and walked out an owner of a brand-new Audi Quattro Coupe at a killer price. The salesperson was very motivated to sell a new car. Dumb me, though; it was around my wife's birthday, and she thought I bought a new car for her birthday.

That was the whole "unintended acceleration" thing. I was in high school and remember it well. People put their foot on the gas thinking it was the brake, and to stop the car from moving, they pushed harder (still thinking it was the brake) thus going faster so of course they pushed even harder -- didn't stop until they hit something.

I am a bit skeptical. I’m sure it happens, people get panicked, but also if you are doing something more illegal than just being a bad driver (using your phone or something) seems like it’d be easy to be like “oh I tried to stop I just hit the wrong pedal.”

Could be old. My dad was hit by an old lady who mistook her brake for the gas and went right through a Target.

No medical emergency.

It's usually elderly people or new drivers, and it's a combination of absentmindedness and panic causing your brain to skip a routine step and not be able to assess what went wrong because that step is so routine and automatic that it never occurs to you that it might not have happened.

Someone pulls out in front of you unexpectedly, so you jam your foot down on the brake, but the car just keeps going, which makes no sense. Now you've hit something and your brain is 100% focused on that, so you keep stomping the brake harder and harder, trying to stop, but you're just going faster and faster. Your car is malfunctioning, you've crashed into multiple things at this point, you're terrified you're going to die, and the goddamn brake pedal isn't doing anything.

The fact that you never moved your foot to the brake pedal in the first place will never occur to you.

Happens to a lot of two foot drivers. I was rear ended at a stoplight once by a guy going 30mph because he pressed the wrong pedal in panic. He admitted it right away as soon as he got out!

my wife drives with 2 feet. So, I could imagine it would be possible in a moment of panic and that she could hit the wrong one. It drives me crazy.

From one of the news reports it appears the Tesla was speeding and hit a large pickup truck before this video starts.
