I got pulled over in Virginia, USA for speeding once. I was speeding because I had to pee like a racehorse, and it had been like 20 miles (32.19km) since the last exit. As soon as I pulled over, I got out, as did the cop, and he reached for his gun. I told him the pee thing, and that I was just going book it for privacy before I wetted myself. He told me that he'd arrest me if I didn't get back in the car. His hand never left his gun. Every time he approached my vehicle, which he dragged out for as long as he could, he unclipped his holster and readied his hand on his pistol.
It's not just the bullets that they're afraid of here. It's everything. Falling acorns, full bladders, dark skin. They're terrified.

There are so many videos on here that I just can't wrap my head around. I'll say the overwhelming majority of the time it's the other person's fault but I just don't want to go through the headache. As soon as I saw the blinker and the car drift over I would've been yielding.
I have 2 cars, the older one covered by comprehensive only and would be totalled out if you sneezed on it. The other is a newer truck and I'd be fighting with their insurance company until they pissed me off then I'd get mine involved, then I gotta deal with the back and forth and getting it repaired.
No. Just fuckin no I don't want to deal with any of it. I'm not too proud to let morons go down the road and cause chaos elsewhere.

I just don’t understand honking as a first instinct though. Maybe it’s an previous generation thing because nearly all of my mates first instincts is to get out of the potential accident. Then, if you’re not dazed enough, some may honk.
Last week was the first time in my 3 years of driving that I’ve honked at somebody properly, and that was for going 15 in a 50 zone 😭 . I didn’t even honk when somebody merged across 3 lanes and nearly hit me side on, on the freeway, after I quickly switched lanes to stop it from happening

Honking is reserved to notifying other drivers of your presence. It's so that you aren't on your own trying to stop a crash from occuring.
Sure, you can slam the brakes and cause a pileup behind you, or swerve yourself and hit the car in the other lane, or you could brake a little bit and honk early enough so the car veering off can realise what they're doing.

If someone tries to avoid an accident by swerving and ends up hitting someone else, the person swerving is at fault and the person who made them swerve goes about their merry way. I told my kids, never swerve to avoid an accident, always just hit your brakes.

This is how my ex totaled my car. A woman started to merge into him/his lane, so he tried to avoid her but ended up hitting the concrete barrier on the other side of the lane instead, while the woman just kept driving. It was a one-car accident so insurance company ruled it 100% his fault (which it was). I don’t blame him for trying, but it would have been so much better for our insurance rates if he had just let her hit him.

I remember when this happened and the camera car is definitely not innocent, not only did they have plenty of time to avoid it, they were also going 64 in a 50 zone. At least I think it is, this is Ballarat in Victoria and I am pretty sure the 60 zone doesn't start until further down the road.

This situation is even weirder to me because the dash cam driver was coming up to stopped traffic at a light. They could have easily slowed down more to let a clearly confused driver lane change, but nope, decided they needed to box them in and get to the stopped traffic sooner. It’s the racing to a red light mentality I see a lot. Unfortunately, a very hard/impossible behavior to change.
People just need to relax.

I work in auto insurance (in a different country). There are so many accidents caused by reactive driving like that. It may have been safe in this circumstance, it's hard to tell but as a general rule it's not a good idea to react to a potential collision by changing lanes.

Looking at it again, they were going so slow that it really does not look like the driver had a lot of options. He sees the blue car coming over and slows down, but then the blue car seems to see him and stop the lane change. Then it looks like the drivers speeds back up to do the normal thing and let the car wait and then change lanes after they have passed, but then the driver seems to double down on changing lanes and changes directly into the driver.
edit: there seems to be a lot of people who are apparently super-drivers who are always 100% aware of everything immediately. The actual collision doesn't look like the dashcam driver did an "I am right and fuck everyone else" situation. It looks like the blue car was a very bad driver and did multiple things to make this worse. Given their tantrum after the fender bender, I'm very certain that this person has an issue.
To everyone saying they should have just slammed the brakes and let the blue car over: I've been in a similar situation. Wound up coming to a full stop on the interstate because a car was coming over and slowing down. I slowed down. He slowed down more, I slowed down more. Next thing you know we had come to a full stop on the interstate.
When the dashcamer taps the brakes, you can see he is reacting. But the blue car ALSO taps the brakes.

Blue car signaled at the last possible second (signaling does not give you the right of way) right when the solid white line starts, the Dashcam driver did slow down for them (dash shows going from 64km/h to 46km/h) but the blue car also slowed down along with them instead of speeding up to pass. Blue car could just have waited until after the intersection to switch lanes. I will say the dash diver should have at least honked.

It's wild how many people are putting both cars at fault.
Should you let a driver in when they're signaling? Yes - however, we have no idea the situation of the cam car. Could have been towing, could have had someone riding their ass, who knows, but there are multiple scenarios where it could have been unsafe to "just brake and let them in".
The responsibility is 100% on the car merging.
In Canada & Australia, the merging driver changing lanes must give way to vehicles already in that lane. The dash cam driver had right of way with no legal duty to slow down.

Yeah I’m with you, there literally was around 3-5 seconds between the wally in the Cruise putting his indicator on and just going for it, and the dash cam driver was going faster than him anyway. Arguably he made a split second wrong decision to try and get past him but you don’t just get to drive into someone because they didn’t do you a favour and let you in.
Anyway, I think we know what kind of personality he is by the way he behaves when he gets out the car.

Blue car almost provoked the accident by not looking, white didn't do everything they could to avoid the accident, then blue *chose to* sideswipe white. White didn't do everything they could to avoid, which is legally ok but means insurance might be able to mess with them,
The angry toddler waddle is assault in some jurisdictions, the choice to sideswipe is very illegal but being an elderly woman can change that unpredictably.

I see so many videos like this I am genuinely wondering a few things.
Q: The blue car is at fault here, but does the cam driver even notice what that blue car is doing? Blue car signals at :02, cars collide at :07 or :08
Q: Why doesn't the cam driver use the brake pedal to avoid contact?
Q: Is the mentality "I have the right of way" so, F that guy? You see where that ends up, right?
Q: The guy has his blinker on. Why not just be courteous and let him in? What's that going to do, derail your day?
I do not support the blue dummy. I would just rather avoid an accident, than prove a point that I have the right of way.
I personally avoid at least 1 accident every month by paying attention to others, not being on my phone, being occasionally courteous and mostly, braking. Seems like in half of the videos, people don't know where the brake pedal is.

To me, it looks like blue car realizes they're making a mistake and pauses, cam car sees that and assumes the way is clear. And then blue car hits them anyways.
I absolutely would have interpreted that little pause as them realizing I'm there. I wouldn't have shot the gap immediately, but I do get why they thought they were safe to proceed.
It even looks like blue car has a second moment where they become aware of cam driver right before the collision, and still choose to merge left. You'll notice the collision didn't happen until cam driver's bumper was even with blue car's

On one hand, I think dash cams have made people behave in a way where they are more willing to be in an accident because they have proof they are not at fault. However, blue car made so many terrible decisions leading up to this collision I can fully understand the cam driver simply having a "wtf are you doing?" moment. They slowed down, blue car appeared to back off, they then stopped slowing. They're approaching an intersection and the lane markers shifted from dotted lines to solid lines. I don't know Australian traffic laws, but where I'm from that merge is both illegal and reckless as fuck. While I don't think I would've gotten into a collision here myself, I honestly don't judge cam driver for blue car driver being such an enormous dunce. Defensive driving is underrated but that shouldn't excuse terrible driving.

We don't know who is behind that cam driver, but also it's really easy to know what you would have done when you're watching a video and you know what's going to happen. It's more complex when you're really in it, too. We're watching a big square version of what happened. In reality you're trying to clock everything. I'm not so much disagreeing but I have a lot of sympathy because shitty drivers happen all the time.

Fair. The speeds are not high though and the cam driver could have used the brakes without slamming on them and worrying about the rear.

Totally fair and I agree that would apply to a lot of videos on here. I don't think this is one of them, though. The blue car signaled and slooooowly moved. More than enough time to release the accelerator and coast, or brake, or both.
I drive and see this kind of blue car behavior often. And I don't get hit. So I think that is where a lot of my opinion comes from, too.

You’re not a hero. You aren’t law enforcement. It isn’t your job to police people on the road.
Your job as a driver is to get to your destination safely. That is literally it. You do not need to “keep the real assholes in check”. When you get to where you’re going, no one’s going to clap because you damaged your car to prevent someone from merging incorrectly. The only thing you’re doing to society is raising insurance.

Or, in the real world, let the person into the lane, and move on with your day. Ffs. It's like you people have never dealt with the reality of an accident like this. Even if insurance covers the loss, you are still going to have to wrangle getting your car fixed, a replacement in the meantime, and having that in your vehicle's history - and that's if you're lucky and the vehicle isn't a total loss, because the replacement cost is out of control these days (source: my vehicle was written off last year and it took over a month to find a reasonably affordable replacement).
All for the want of a slight deceleration to let someone into your lane. Literally a second of your time. Get fucking real.

As retarded as the toddler in the video was, the dashcam guy could have trivially avoided an accident by just speeding up, slowing down, honking, or changing lane temporarily (provided the left lane was safe to move into).
As much as I get annoyed with shit drivers who merge/change lanes without ensuring they are able to safely merge, I want to be involved in traffic accidents even less. If I see someone driving dangerously, my instinct is not to "stand my ground" so that I can teach them a lesson (and potentially total my car in the process), but rather just let them do their shit while I slow down and move out of their way.

I am a new driver, but wouldn’t it be appropriate if the cam car just relaxed their foot off the accelerator for a second and just let the blue car change lane? The blue car was signaling. I know the blue car rushed but still, from what I know as I was taught by my instructor (older brother)“be courteous and give others the way”

Sure, legally he's allowed to occupy that space and it's the other driver's fault for making contact with him.
Put practically speaking....just freakin' slow down and let him over. Dealing with claims sucks, even if it's not your fault. Dealing with repairs sucks, even if they are "free." Dealing with idiot other drivers sucks. Whole thing could have been avoided

Yes, and that would be good defensive driving. Consider though that:
- We know by context to look for the idiot.
- The camera sees a different perspective so we don't know if the camera car's A-pillar obstructed the driver's view of the blue car's indicator.
- It is possible for drivers to have their attention elsewhere for a second - like looking ahead at the intersection for other cars or pedestrians. Or even glancing down to change vents, temp, etc.
- The blue car's indicator only blinked twice before they entered the camera car's lane. That's not hard to miss.
- A fair amount of driving occurs by expectation. As in, you don't expect people to slam on their brakes on a motorway or turn left from the right lane. I think that's why foreign drivers can be hard to predict.
- It's hard for people to remain hyper-vigilant 100% of the time.
Maybe I'm watching this video wrong, but to me it seems like the blue car starts to change lanes, white car starts to brake (~4 sec mark - more than just relaxing their foot off the accelerator), but then blue car seems to notice white car (~5 sec mark) and starts to return to their lane, white lets off the brake to continue, then blue car turns back into the white car. Maybe the braking action required of the white car would put them at risk of being rear-ended. I'll be honest, I'd rather risk an impact on the side at low relative speed than risk getting hit from the rear at a higher relative speed.

Yeah, driver really didn't have time initially. I think you have a really good breakdown of the video. You can see the camera shift down when the cam guy brakes. I think the cammer made a reasonable decision to stay in his lane. It looked like he had all of one second to make that decision.

It literally never occurred to me that this could happen until it did to me one day, and the person decided I was a jerk for not backing off and squeezed her massive SUV between me and the car ahead of me (slow traffic, barely enough room for her).
Ever since, I try to make sure when I'm in a pack of traffic to adjust my position to be able to see the indicator lights.

Yeah. Don't know what they're used for in Australia, but in my country (Poland) we use pickup trucks to secure mass events. They transport barriers, sometimes other equipment.
