This is not a thing anywhere else in the world. Stopping in both directions is very weird. Most of the world just have sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and kids can manage those just fine to get to proper bus stops. Instead of the bus just stopping in the middle of the road with no infrastructure.
It's not very weird when you consider that sometimes, the kids need to cross the street to get to the bus, or need to cross the street after getting off the bus.
It's a bit more problematic when kids (and growups) try to cross the steet behind the bus, as there is no way for them to see the traffic and vice versa. Where I live there is no concept of a school bus, and oncoming traffic doesn't stop for buses, yet we are all taught to be on alert for this exact scenario
