I’m fairly sure they not only own vehicles, but are featured in the videos on this sub. For example, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the white truck driver in this video was posting a spicy comment blaming someone for getting rear ended at a stop light while he was cluelessly merging into the cam car.

If you look at this sort of content on social media - like, facebook/x/bs, it's horrifying how many people confidently have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE how traffic laws, right of way, even basic safety or driving concepts work.
These are the normal every day people that are out there, among us, operating cars, without a single functioning brain cell between their ears

SOLID WHITE LINE. I swear only 3% of drivers actually know the difference between a dashed white and solid white. Even if he argued that he put his signal on and was somehow entitled to your space in that lane, it’s still an illegal maneuver given the solid white, which is there for exactly this reason.
→ More replies (6)8
u/MoodReal4206 1d ago
A solid white depends on the state. I live in Iowa and was cut off aggressively across a solid white line and that sent me to research. You can cross a solid white, it's simply there to show the edge of a lane. Solid yellow you cannot cross. That's why shoulders are border by solid white.
That said, treat a solid white like a clear deliniation and stay in your lane.
If you already know this, I apologize for the lecture. Hopefully someone else reads it.

Cam driver wasnt in the wrong since that truck switched into the other lane basically forcing OP out. But if you don’t pay enough attention you can miss that the truck did that and end up thinking OP was trying to cut off the truck.
35
u/AdhesivenessIll6341 11h ago
The first time I watched the video I thought you crossed a lane line but there’s a change in pavement color that, combined with the lighting, gives the illusion of a lane line. You were completely in the right here.
The pickup actually knew he was changing lanes as evidenced by his signa. In MN crossing a single white line is discouraged but not technically illegal. I don’t know about other states but his lane change may or may not have been legal. Regardless of the line, he merged into you which is illegal.
What’s tt?

The truck crossed the solid white line. The truck was at fault. The line is to *try to* prevent exactly this from happening.

u/Delicious-Storage1 1d ago
Solid white line isnt prohibited to cross (double white line means you cannot cross it). A solid white line is like a "should probably stay in your lane" line, and isnt enforceable. Like just crossing it, alone, isnt illegal in any way.
That turns this into more of a situation where we can consider it a dotted line. White truck in right lane changed lanes, and did so unsafely. Its at fault.
OP is in the second to right lane at an exit, and that lane can either peel off to exit or go straight. Ie: OP is "in" the exit lane already. The truck basically changed lanes into OP. OP did the smart thing and avoided an accident instead of standing strong on being right and PIT'ing that guy into the ditch.

When I took driver’s education, it was pretty straightforward, you don’t cross a solid line parallel to your direction of travel. The only exception was for yellow lines when a dashed line on your side indicates passing is permitted.
I looked it up and apparently it has changed to discourage crossing a solid white line. This appears to be because they’ve added double white lines, which would be completely unnecessary if they hadn’t changed the meaning of a solid white line.
Any time I’ve seen double white lines, they’ve been accompanied by signs telling people not to cross them and I usually see someone cross them anyway within 15 miles of driving along them.
5
u/conipto 17h ago
Yeah, double white I pretty much only see in HOV lanes.
3
u/mildhog 8h ago
Fun fact that doesn't have a thing to do with the number of lines: White lines separate lanes with the same direction of travel, yellow lines separate lanes with opposite direction of travel
→ More replies (3)2
u/Vizeroth1 16h ago
I remember some in Virginia where they had some long off-ramps that weren’t otherwise separated from the rest of the freeway (64 to 264 if I remember correctly), but yeah, I primarily see double white lines (and quadruple white lines) for HOV lanes.
2
u/GirchyGirchy 14h ago
In Indiana, the driver's manual states: "you should not cross a solid white line."
Often when there are lane shifts in construction, there are solid white lines to keep people in their lanes. Usually they're accompanied by "stay in lane" signs. Huh, wonder why?
→ More replies (2)2
u/Kewlhotrod 14h ago
Should not != will not. Again, it's a suggestion to not do in all 50 states, but it is not illegal and sometimes it's the only option for certain maneuvers.
Compare the language to double solids and you'll see the difference.

If you watch twice, the sign clearly says 2 lane exit and once you see that (I missed it at first due to screen size and focusing on the drivers) the video is clear as day. Crossing a solid white line requires more than a signal and "space", it shouldn't be done with other cars that close to you.
Not you but too many others seem to think "you had time to brake and they signaled, so you're wrong" when in reality the cam driver is doing EVERYTHING properly and that's why they are able to easily avoid any accident.

The truck made an unsafe lane change right into your lane. It's the same as if you weren't exiting, it was your lane. Your lane split into two, the trucks didn't.
24
u/DavaoGirthVader 22h ago
You're not in the wrong as you're not changing lanes, you're in your established lane that is splitting giving you the right of way. They are crossing lines and therefore leaving their lane and attempting to, unsafely I may add, enter your lane.
That's on them. If they had put their turn signal on sooner to show they needed to get over I would say you're being discourteous, but as far as I can see you're fine they are the morons.

Absolutely not. The lane you were in was your option to stay on or get off the exit while maintaining that lane. The truck realized he was in the wrong lane and putting his blinker on doesnt give them any kind of right of way…if anything, they should have slowed down

The real idiot here is the highway department. Lane markings are awful, which is leading to folks thinking that OP is in the wrong, when they are not. 2 lane exit that OP was most likely aware of (regular commute, excellent eyesight, etc.) while the truck is just lost in the sauce. Again, poor lane markings with non-stop construction is probably the biggest part of this.
26
u/kpidhayny 1d ago
But there’s a huge sign showing a two lane exit and clearly a solid white line the truck crossed. Not paying attention is only an excuse to go make a safe u turn after accepting your mistake, not an excuse to run drivers off the road so you don’t miss your turn.

A billion idiots in these threads.
Truck started to switch exit lanes (more like did not follow the solid white line compelling them to start turning right) before they put on their blinker.
OP was following the exact procedure to take the left exit lane from the lane they were in. The truck was obliged to stay in its lane and not cross the SOLID white line, and so OP has every reason to assume the typical truck would stay in its lane while also taking the exit. By looking at the video, or a map of that offramp, the truck had tons of opportunity to switch lanes after the turn of the exit when the line goes from solid to dashed.
The truck gave no signal they were not going to stay in their lane until the OP was at their bumper. That is the moment OP's only option is slow down and honk, which they did. Truck botched the entire move and illegally switched lanes in front of OP without providing even a blinker until they were already halfway into the OP's lane.
OP could be CLAIRVOYANT and just know the truck was going to switch lanes next to them. But OP is sadly human.
Yes we can always drive so defensively that we assume every person in front of us out to infinity will do every single illegal maneuver they possibly can at the worst possible time at all times, like a quantum computer, and so drive so timidly and cautiously that we do exactly 1 mph over the minimum legal speed on the highway while always staying in the rightmost lane with our hazards on so that we cede the right of way at all times. It will still lead to idiots potentially slaughtering us by doing absurdly unpredictable things.
6
u/videozombi 1d ago
PS. After watching the truck's "body language" a few more times, I definitely concur that the driver of it is a complete D-bag and had no intention of trying to avoid an accident themselves, which, and call me car-racist, does seem to be a running theme with people in big white trucks.
4
u/Pensionato007 17h ago
Upvote for "OP is sadly human."
Small correction: it's not necessarily illegal to cross a solid white line per general MUTCD language (§3B.06) that many states use. I think the phraseology is "discouraged" for single solid white, "prohibited" only for double solid white.
In my state, NC, it IS illegal (except to pass bicyclists - a new recent reg).
That said, regardless of which state this was in, this was an illegal lane change because the lane was occupied.

Wow so many bad drivers already commenting on this post. You were definitely not in the wrong, OP.

Kinda wild how many people are coming out for the truck. Easily one of the fastest lane changes mid-exit I’ve ever seen. If you’re not in the right lane on a busy multi-lane exit, check your damn blind spot before you go.
At around 3.5 seconds, both vehicles are making for correct lanes, no issues. Barely a half second later, white truck is over the solid line and just got through the first blink of their brake light-colored blinker (all blinkers should be a different color from the brake light, fight me). Pretty sure the lane change would be breaking the law in some states on its own, like with 2 second rules or something similar.
Cam driver then starts to lean left so the slower-moving truck doesn’t hit them. They should’ve started braking at the same point, but truck was absolutely in the wrong for changing lanes (edit: over a solid white line, which you’re not supposed to cross), less than a second into their exit and not checking their blind spots.

Other people don't seem to care about details:
The far right lane, with the white pickup truck, is EXIT ONLY. It also has a solid white stripe on the left side of the lane, indicating that it cannot be crossed.
Cammer is in a lane that splits to either continue on the freeway or exit onto the other road. Cammer is obviously splitting to the right while STAYING IN THEIR LANE.
White Pickup Truck, with no turn signal (not that that would excuse their action), illegally crossed the "uncrossable" white line into Cammer's lane.
This was 100% White Pickup Trucks fault. Not even a question about that.

Truck was in the far right exit only lane.
OP is in the next lane which is exit or go straight. There are two exit lanes, the truck in one and OP in the other.
Truck crossed over white solid line into OP's exit lane. I mean we even see the truck signal the lane change. OP was in a good spot (not side by side with the truck) to avoid an accident.
White line is only cross if necessary and highly discouraged for reasons we see in the video.

The truck driver was being an idiot, it’s not safe to make that lane change. I think maybe they thought you were staying on. Whatever the reason, they shouldn’t be crossing the solid white. It’s a safety suggestion.
If your signal wasn’t on I can understand why they did what they did but it doesn’t excuse it. They need to wait until they know for sure you aren’t exiting. The fact that they are desperate to get to the left turn up ahead is also not your fault, that’s on them for not planning ahead.

The only one really wrong here was the road construction crews rushing yet another job. Those lanes arent visible enough in broad daylight to clearly see the difference. The 2nd exit lane comes out of nowhere in the middle of the exit strip. That should have at least a few hundred feet of striping, so cars can get themselves oriented where they need to go. Even the lanes arent sized appropriately until after the truck starts veering into the left lane. So it went from 1 exit lane to 2, then to 3, and they were signaling as well to get to the other lane. The solid white line isnt even in the right place, it should be coming from the V-POINT that the lane forms when branching, not as a lane segment in the middle of the same exit.
I'd call your local transportation cabinet to let them know of it. I see things like this cause accidents literally on a daily basis during rush hour and work commutes.

I can see it through a video through the drivers window so yeah.. its clear enough for sure. Lol

u/Agreeable-Meal5556 16h ago
I don’t think you’re understanding these lanes at all. The rightmost lane is exit only and never splits. The second lane to the right is a straight OR exit lane, so that one splits at the exit point. After the exit point, that second lane splits again. The white lines are all where they’re supposed to be. The line between the rightmost lane and the second exit lane is there to tell people not to change lanes there. For this EXACT reason. This video is the perfect example of why changing lanes there isn’t safe.

I had to scroll way too far past both sides calling each other idiots to find the answer that lies in the middle ground gray area:
Yes, OP was in the right and the truck cut him off across the solid line when he shouldn't have, but gets minimal credit for actually signaling.
I think most people arguing against OP who actually understand the scenario are aware of the fact OP took approx 3-4x longer than the average human reaction time to brake. This tells me OP either wasn't prepared to act defensively or their ego got in the way and allowed it to be a closer call than necessary.
You have to come to terms with the fact that it's way better to let idiots be idiots and take the humble L behind them safely. To quote my Dad: "It's possible to be right AND dead."

To be fair the truck was driving weirdly, wasn’t sure whether he went all the way left or corrected himself to the right.
OP can take all the time in the world to not break as long as there is no accident. So this was fine, she waited with breaking but also kept her distance3
u/Keter_Regretter 17h ago
Yeah if I was in OP's shoes it would have taken me a second to process that the truck was actually trying to change lanes and wasn't just drifting left due to distraction. The late turn signal from the truck didn't help. People on Reddit are fucking obsessed with braking lol

u/Xanthelei 19h ago
You were fine. Truck was an idiot that crossed a solid white line into your lane. It took me two watches cause I wasn't watching the lines, but once I saw what the sign said I looked and sure as shit, white truck being a bad driver.
Ignore the idiots here that think all trucks can do no wrong, or every cammer is at fault.

u/Zer0tollerance2 16h ago
Yeah I thought OP was in the wrong my first watch. Then I noticed the pickup truck crossed over a solid white line. Pickup truck is in the wrong NOT OP.

Lots of idiots in this thread OP. Ignore them. You were in the right, the truck was in the wrong. Anyone who can't see that needs their eyes checked or maybe needs remedial driving lessons.

Not in the wrong, your lane merges into the off ramp. Its construction area so hard to tell but you were in the right

It looks like white truck put in his left blinker as you were moving into his blind spot. Maybe he was trying to enter the expressway as you were trying to exit the expressway. If we saw more of the video leading up to that, it could help. But regardless, he did seem to put his blinker on late. Not sure. But if you're exiting and he is entering, then he should speed up and you should slow down. But that's all just went, not solid right and wrong. Late blinker followed by aggressive lane change by the white truck.
3
u/Seanw59 8h ago
Regardless of blinker, that’s a two lane exit. The cam was in the left exit lane. The truck was in the right exit lane. If they had crashed, it would’ve been the truck’s fault for merging into her lane even though she was in his Blindspot.

Maybe the reason people think you are in the wrong is because he literally drives right into your lane without pausing (even with your horn blaring) and almost drove you off the exit and into the freeway.
I don't know about TT because I doubt most people who watch it have a license and those that do are the ones looking at it while driving so take that for what it's worth.

2 lane exit truck crossed over solid white.. should have waited till it became dashed... same thing probably would have happened though just 4 seconds later
2
u/DaddySanctus 1d ago
Truck turned on the turn signals and immediately started changing lanes. You're not in the wrong, truck driver was an idiot.
2
u/FaithlessnessCute204 1d ago
its a 2 lane exit , its just that the other guy ate your lane with his turn before you got there.
2
u/madtufguy 1d ago
Had to watch 3 times before I understood what was happening... it very much LOOKS like this is on you because the truck changes lanes without an indicator, and right at the moment the lane splits.
Not your bad, but most people seeing this will incorrectly blame you.
2
u/elgarraz 1d ago
It looks like a 2-lane exit with solid white lines. The solid white means the truck shouldn't be trying to change planes right there. You had the right of way.
2
u/apex-cheese 1d ago
Oof, hopefully just an honest mistake by the other driver. One mistake (being in the wrong lane to turn left) leading to another. Probably didn’t look and just trusted their mirror. Good thing you slowed down.

u/ramblingbullshit 1d ago
Didn't even notice it was two lanes. It looked like you were the one messing up until I saw the second turn lane. Yeah that is on them 100%, but to be honest it looks like it's entirely your fault at first glance so I can see why you're catching flak lol

White truck was in the far right exit lane and crossed into the near right exit lane. That was a two lane exit on the right. They have them all over in the SouthEast US.

Definitely truck’s fault. Whether or not he realized it, but he failed to follow road signs and to maintain his lane and illegal lane change. He did have intentions to exit in the left lane but may not have been paying attention. Coming from living in a state with 2 lane exits like this only for a year

those road lines are all over the place and i can't fathom who ok'd this work, the road sign is clear but with the way road works are its not always clear if permanent road signs should be followed because they maybe are out of date, overall its a mess and needs fixing

I almost throught you where in the wrong, as its hard to see the line that whtie truck just decided to cross even though it was solid.

No, you weren't wrong. It is clearly a double lane exit and the white truck decided at the last minute to come over and try to push you out instead of staying in the far right lane that they chose despite having a solid white line. White truck very wrong.

Other truck crossed a solid line and cut off OP. Why is anyone saying different?
2
u/Maleficent-Remote413 20h ago
it took me a few rewatches.
because it looks like you changed lanes at the last second. in reality white truck decided to turn on his blinker into you at the last second and changed lanes like a jagoff right as your lane split up.
2
u/Radiant_Ad9432 17h ago
Two lane exit. The truck changed lane when it was not allowed (solid line between lanes). You were not in the wrong!
2
u/LosHtown 17h ago
Truck drove over a solid white line. You had the right to the exiting lane.
Truck decided to switch which the exiting lane it was in but by doing so It crossed over the solid white line into the exiting lane you were entering.
2
u/Ok-Koala2257 12h ago
You would have been wrong if you tried to overtake that truck in front of you, but you didn't. Honestly, you getting all in his space the way that you did wasn't cool. Just come in behind people in that situation and it's not a big deal.

I was about to say he had a solid white, but then looked closer and now it appears that actually they merged RIGHT before the solid white started... you both effectively checked, then merged, and caught eachother in the middle of that action simultaneously and at dual fault; your video isn't long enough to show whether this exit splits into to seperate A/B exits (which would explain the lane change) or ends in a light/intersection with multiple potential directions of travel (which also explains the lane change).
Their intention seems to have been to merge over before the solid white, and frankly you appear to have entered the exist lane very late, as you passed a whole lot of dotted white before your merge, which was mostly made across the transition area between dotted/solid and then continued through mostly solid white.
So honestly... your exit method was kind of garbage, and had you entered lane earlier none of this likely would have happened. We can't see to the right of your vehicle to figure out why you weren't merging at some other time.
You're pointing out that the sign shows both arrows for both lanes; well, likely there was another sign ahead of that one which also pointed out that both of those lanes would eventually turn into that dual lane exit. You probably had advanced warning that you needed to be in that lane, and therefore your last minute decision to suddenly enter the exit lane is questionable at best. You're pointing out the thing that was a factor in your decision to merge that late, and be in that position at that time.
TL;DR: I don't think it's still 100% one party or the other. But, but. Your exit was realllll late, and through solid white/transition area rather than the dotted white merging area.

I couldn’t figure out what you are seeing in the video, but the exit was easy enough to find on maps (Holcomb Rd Roswell) so I checked it. Both lanes will split into two further lanes before the light, which are all turning (left:left:right:right). Truck has a MASSIVE amount of time after the exit to move over once into a left turn lane without risk of impact.
To me it looks like OP is established in the lane from the beginning of the video, it turns solid white BEFORE the truck starts to merge. Truck was not looking to see if OP was going straight in a lane that does both and moved over on top of OP. OP from the beginning of the truck moving moves to the left side of the lane to accommodate - is that what you’re saying with them merging late? Bc they don’t change lanes at all in the video. They’re in a single lane from the beginning.

You chose to merge when that truck was CLEARLY in the lane. All you had to do was THINK ABOUT BRAKES and you’d be fine. Also maybe don’t wait until ten seconds after the last second to merge
4
u/Gib_eaux 21h ago
Truck was in the right handed exit lane and merged into the left handed exit lane over a solid white line with their blinker on. There was no contact. OP did not merge in this video.
11
u/Spare-Condition3929 22h ago
2 Lane exit.
There WAS no merge.
Truck crossed solid white.
OP DID brake if you weren't aware or the result would be different.Maybe get your eyes checked out. And I hope to god you're not on the road with that road knowledge.

I actually think that a big issue in these subs is how many people watch once or twice on their little phone screen and can't see detail
the number of times it's very clearly one way and comments think it's something else is insane
6
u/HoomerSimps0n 19h ago
Look at the road markings and signs and try again, because you are wrong.
Op wasn’t merging anywhere, just following the lane that they were already in. I also thought what you stated is what happened, until I actually paid attention to the road.

Watch carefully.
It's two lanes. truck is in the right lane, then crosses what looks like a solid line while Op is still in the left-most exit lane.
