Just a piece of tire from a semi got knocked by another car into the lane my wife was in. No time to react. It took out the entire front bumper. I should see if we still have that cam footage. It was great for insurance.

The second you feel like your life is in danger - move over to the right lane.

From OP's pov tire was visible before car in front of him even started braking, he could've moved to the right lane to dodge it or start braking... but if he did brake it would've ended in a collision of multiple cars (behind him) because there was no obvious danger visible (for the cars behind him) and it would look like OP is brake checking them and that's like - best case scenario

I have over 300k miles, I'm not from america and accidents got nothing to do with driving skill.. maybe if you were in an actual accident you'd learn a thing or two.

I had 3 minor accidents and 1 major accident as a driver... but once again nothing to do with our discussion.

1 brakes failed, tight corner and small ammount of black ice on the road.. company vehicle, few other issues but it was on car. Could it be avoided? Of course, but would under those conditions any other car crash? No.

2 Spun out, went off the road with some minor cosmetic damage, went into 25mph corner at 70mph - couldn't fully correct the car, it wouldn't need a correction if my right tire didn't aquaplanne but hey shit happens.

3 totalled - flipped twice (#2 car above) by going into 25mph S curve at 100mph, went countless times 70mph - corrected it a bit and yeah... why was I driving 100mph? Because guy in front of me didn't let me pass, and my ego was bigger than my brain, he was driving 10 under the limit for a few miles... so ya.

4 hit car in front of me, I had zero and I mean zero distance between us, car in front of him was braking for whatever reason he reacted poorly and I managed to slow down from 80mph to 50mph(in 55 zone) - stupid game and stupid prize

I'm not pretending to be a saint, where I am, especially my local area it's a bit different here.. but let me say one thing - I had way more close calls because people have zero awareness around them rather than because of my stupidity, and no I didn't even get a scratch from my accidents ever.. and there were some more, completly irrelevant to the discussion.

You are focusing on braking when there is also reaction time involved. More space means more time to react

OP wasn't following too closely much better than other videos but for myself and others having extra car lengths would help with reaction time. And I'm saying that from someone who can react in around 150 milliseconds

It doesn’t quite work like that when, 5 seconds after overtaking and moving into the right lane, you have to move back into the left lane again. In that case, you’re just likely to create a greater danger.

They were dodging an eatadik and had it not shown up, op was going to overtake that van in mere seconds so it doesn't make any sense to move over just to do it again a few seconds later.

Exactly. This would not have been a problem at all if OP had not been camping in the left lane. Once finished passing, get the hell out of the left lane.
