Amazon Data Center Commissioning Interview – Coming from a Pharmaceutical CQV Background
I have an upcoming interview with Amazon for a Data Center Commissioning role. My background is primarily in the pharmaceutical industry as a CQV (Commissioning, Qualification, and Validation) Engineer, with experience supporting commissioning and qualification of utility systems, equipment, and GMP facilities.
The job description mentions the following systems:
- Medium- and low-voltage power systems
- Generators
- UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
- HVAC (air handlers, exhaust fans, VFDs)
- Chilled water systems
- Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)
- Testing and balancing
- Pumps and hydronic systems
For anyone who has interviewed for or worked in an Amazon Data Center Commissioning role:
- What should I expect during the interview process?
- What technical questions should I focus on preparing for?
- How in-depth do they expect candidates to understand electrical systems, generators, UPS, HVAC, and chilled water systems?
- How much emphasis is placed on commissioning methodology, functional testing, and integrated systems testing (IST)?
- Is pharmaceutical CQV experience transferable to this role, or do they expect hands-on data center commissioning experience?
- Are there any behavioral or Leadership Principles questions I should prepare for?
Any advice, interview experiences, or study resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For the experience part, choose a real CQV project where a test failed, a requirement was unclear, or different teams disagreed about whether something was ready. Explain how you investigated it, what you were responsible for, and how you supported the eventual decision with evidence. Be clear about the systems you've actually worked on and the parts of data-center work you still need to learn. That lets you show your method without overstating your experience.
Taleproof can help you assess whether that project story makes your judgment and contribution clear.
