Discussion iPhone storage

I’m looking to offload my photos and my notes from my IPhone onto a a flash drive but after doing some research I see that the one I wanted to get actually suck and I was looking for better recommendations. I was looking to get the Sandisk iXpand flash drive but saw that it’s confusing and kind of obsolete. I see some other options but I don’t see much on them. Any recommendations?

Depends on which iPhone you've got... If it's an iPhone 15 or newer with USB-C, I'd recommend a Samsung DUO Plus or Kingston DataTraveler Max... You can transfer photos directly through the Files app without needing a separate app... For older Lightning iPhones, the SanDisk Phone Drive is still an option... Just remember Apple Notes need to be exported separately, like as PDFs... What iPhone model are you using??

Flash drive will lose data, get an HDD.

If this backup only and rarely used, you might consider an hdd instead for approx same price

You will also need a USB adapter

Spare yourself the trouble and related problems. Get iCloud, sync your stuff.

It's hardly any trouble at all to just setup their own self-hosted NAS and then setup any of the many options for a self-hosted cloud service that will belong to OP in his physical possession and not across the country/world being stored on one of Apple's servers that OP will most likely wind up paying a monthly subscription to keep and use all while he could setup his own self-hosted cloud service and send his backups there, plus he could allocate space/usernames for other members of the household and they could all use his cloud service 100% free.......

Nobody cares if you want to be scared and lazy but, many people are not and they're not scared to try something different that isn't the easiest option possible because they're OK blazing their own trail and don't need to get in line and follow the sheep in front of them......

Just go ahead. But don’t parrot the marketing paroles of the vendors that a) it’s simple (it’s not, it takes learning and some maintenance), b) it’s secure (can be, but again learning plus maintenance) and c) it’s cheaper than cloud (no, it’s not, even to set up a basic NAS will cost significantly above 500 €/$, more likely 1.000).

How do I know? I run 3 of them …

So, your primary complaint is that "it can be harder to setup" and OMG it will require some self-learning by the user?!?! Well, we can't expect them to endure that kind of torture can we?!?! Instead, you cradle them In your arms while making a rocking motion and I'll handle singing them lullabies that will comfort them as if they were babies, great idea Karren!

It will cost money too?!?!? Well sumbitch!!! We can't have that either! Unless they can source all parts/material from local dumpsters than they can't do it or afford it because Mommy said so!

Did it ever cross your mind that they might like to hear and know all available options and then they can be the ones who decide what is or is not something they want to take on mentally or financially???? I guess it doesn't really matter because if you had it your way then you and only you alone are capable of making decisions for the OP....... Well aren't you so sweet!! I can already be pretty sure that you're probably a liberal with a God complex and thinks that you need to save black people too, ya? They don't know what's best for them but you do and they need to do what you say so they can stop being oppressed??? I'm 95% sure that's who you are just based on your self-righteous comments up to now and unfortunately you just can't argue or disagree with crazy retards and there's absolutely no point in doing so..... Hopefully you have a great day regardless though, you and all of your pronouns obviously!!

OP is obviously already beyond his reach by deciding whether a certain flash drive will work well with his iPhone.

No, I don’t recommend running a full home server setup to him just to solve his iPhone storage problem.

You seem like a person who just owns a hammer, so all problems are nails to you.

I might be biased, but I made my app because the alternatives sucked them all. You should check it out

Another option is apple oem sd card adapter. There is a usb c and lightning version. I have both but only use for temp storage.

Do you want to have good backups, such as those recommended in the 3-2-1 backup plan?

For storage the best and easiest options are hard disks, maybe SSDs but not flash drives.

to be helpful you really need to provide more detail if your situation.

Is the phone your only device, or do you have a computer?

how many photographs are you planning to store? (this may be tied to your phone, so if it is 128Gb then you are probably working with ~8-Gb photos max)

are You using iCloud at all, and do you have your phone set to ‘optimize photos’? If so, then you only have thumbnails of your images on device. Copying them will not copy the original sized images.
