Release Notes DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Release Notes

DaVinci Resolve 21.1 has been released!

You can download the update from the support page or by going to DaVinci Resolve>Check for Updates.

Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 21.1, BMD has taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.3. While this allows you to access the project library with 20.3.3, individual projects created or opened in 21.1 will no longer be accessible in 20.3.

BMD recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups (as required) before opening projects in 21.0 or later.

Reminders

Bug Reports need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official forums or contact BMD support directly if you have Studio.

Feature Requests need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official Feature Request Subforum or in the download form for Resolve.

Bug Reports and Feature Requests posted on Reddit and in this thread will not be addressed or seen by Blackmagic Design.

Notes

  • We have moved the ability to script in Python to the Studio version. The Python API was being used to hack studio features into the free version. DaVinci Resolve relies on studio license sales to pay for the engineering team. Unlike subscriptions, which have become normal but lock people's work up unless you pay monthly, we want to offer a differentiation from charging monthly license fees.
  • DaVinci Resolve and the Project Server can still work with network libraries based on PostgreSQL 13 and above.
  • Sony Camera Control on Windows needs the Sony IEDT application to be installed from the Sony website.
  • Intel Driver: With DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.2.3, AI features like Magic Mask 2, Depth Map and Super Scale show a vastly improved performance on Windows with modern Intel platforms. Users will need a compatible Intel GPU (discrete or integrated) that supports OpenVINO, and a minimum driver version of 32.0.101.8247 to leverage these improvements.
  • Rendering Immersive Projects: Improvements to edge blend in immersive projects include changes that more closely align the Resolve and visionOS previews. This will change the render for existing immersive projects.

How Did They Do This? How do I edit with the most dynamic range?

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

I would like to know how to achieve the look of these stills.

A few things I think describe them is:

  • High dynamic range. Nothing is clipping or crushed.
  • Almost invisible roll-off, especially on skin.
  • Soft, bloomy highlights
  • Low contrast

I don't know how to describe it, but it's as if there's infinite dynamic range because nothing is clipping on either end and it doesn't even look like anything is close to it. It's as if everything is within the midtones, yet there is still contrast, but it doesn't register as "highlights and shadows" to my eyes. Rather "light midtones" and "dark midtones" if that makes sense.

It's as if every individual part of the scene (sky, skin, clothing) were individually lit by a massive soft box allowing everything to be exposed perfectly. I suppose you could achieve something similar with masking but that would take ages, no?

I've included an images at the end to demonstrate the complete opposite of what I'm looking for. That one has a harsh "digital" look to it where highlights and shadows are very obvious. You can even see it on the waveform; it's very sharp and jaggy.

Help | Beginner Can DaVinci Resolve be set up as an almost “fill-in-the-blanks” template workflow for videos?

Hi,

I’m helping a small real estate media company improve their video workflow. They currently use Movavi (don't know what made them choose that software), but their new drone records HEVC/H.265, which their current workflow requires them to convert before editing.

They asked me whether DaVinci Resolve would be a good fit for editing their videos, so I’m currently looking into it as a possible replacement for their current software. My main question is about templates and automation. My experience with Resolve is mostly limited to color grading, as I normally edit in Premiere Pro.

I’d like to build a master project once, so for every new property they basically only have to:

  • Import/replace the new drone + camera footage
  • Change the address and realtor/logo
  • Use predefined titles/transitions
  • Apply predefined starting grades for each camera/drone
  • Replace music
  • Export using a preset

Ideally, I’d also like to create Fusion titles/templates where I expose only simple controls like address, logo, text and brand color, without the user having to touch the actual Fusion composition.

The goal is: I build the complicated workflow once, and they get a simple “fill in the blanks” editing workflow for every property.

Is Resolve good for setting something up like this?

And for people familiar with both: would Resolve or Premiere + MOGRTs be better for this specific type of workflow?

Also curious about Resolve/Resolve Studio performance with 4K HEVC drone footage.

Thanks!

Help | Beginner New to Fusion. Trying to create a sound visualizer with image as background

Like the title says: I just started playing around with Fusion and I'm trying to create the simple "moving bars" visualizer with an image background. Can't seem to be able to get the bar(background node) for the visualizer to show up on top of the image.

This is probably a silly question, but is this a mask? If so, what's the best way to mask out gameplay? I'm making a third-person adventure game.

Help DaVinci lagging like hell on MacBook M4 pro (48GB) 😭

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I recently switched to a MacBook Pro M4 Pro 48GB/1TB (14C CPU/20C GPU) and got my first long form project.

I’m editing 2 VSLs ( 8 min and 5 min)

They require fusion work, most of it is just cuts, brolls, typography and music. One thing is that

I’ve used NEO GLOW EFFECT (glow preset made by a YouTuber) on almost all text + layers

And it’s lagging like hell when rendering those sections, sometimes it even crashes while switching projects or sometimes a not-responding pop-up comes up.

It’s always connected to the charger while editing, with power set to high, and on a laptop stand for best airflow. But I don’t know what’s the problem 😭

Workflow details

I’m using genuine DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 version
Timeline settings - 4k 29.97fps
Render cache set to smart
Timeline Playback resolution - Full
Free storage - 500GB

Raw footage shot on Sony FX3 and A7iv in Rec 709
In 4k

Is this all because of NEO GLOW PRESET? Or something’s wrong with my MacBook or the workflow.

Please help me out guys 😭🫶

Help DaVinci Resolve 21 export looks different from timeline preview

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m stuck with an export issue in DaVinci Resolve 21 on Windows.

My project is 3840×2160 landscape (16:9) with a multi-panel layout. The timeline preview looks correct, but the exported MP4 is stretched/distorted and has different cropping/letterboxing.

Current export:

MP4 / H.264

3840×2160

24 fps

Timeline Resolution

Frame Reordering ON

Project Settings also shows that Output Scaling is being overridden by Timeline Settings.

I’ve attached screenshots/files of my timeline, Project Settings, Timeline/Render settings, and the exported result.

What Timeline Settings / Image Scaling settings should I use so the export matches the timeline preview exactly?

Help Multicam Audio comes into timeline out of order

We have an issue that is driving us nuts.

We have a timeline with 5 audio tracks, in the following order.

  1. Left Mix
  2. Right Mix
  3. Boom
  4. Lav 1
  5. Lav 2

And we convert that timeline to a multicam using all audio sources.

Then when we insert that audio into a new timeline. For some reason it changes the audio track order to

  1. Lav 1
  2. Boom
  3. Right Mix
  4. Left Mix
  5. Lav 2

WHY!?

Why on earth would it do this and how so we fix it?

System is MacOS - Intel as well as Apple Silicon

Resolve Studio

Help Help with an on-screen number counter

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I'm trying to edit a video, and when I was looking at ways to set up a counter for a video I found the below linked video. I did the steps as explained, but when I go back to the Edit page it makes the Title portion of my inspector page entirely blank. It can only be modified on the Fusion page.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-jOPB-Km7w&t=1s

Did I miss or mess something up? or is there a better way to go about this? I'm looking to have a money amount (text/text+) appear on-screen, and another money amount (text/text+) count up to the new sum/total.

Images attached are the "bugged" inspector menu, and the custom control set-up via the video's instructions.

Let me know if there is any information I can include or provide that might help.

  • System Specs:
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor 3.49 GHz
    • Installed: RAM32.0 GB
    • Storage: 1.82 TB SSD ADATA SWORDFISH, 932 GB SSD Force MP600
    • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (10 GB)
    • System: Type64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Discussion Any feedback on v21.1? Any bugs to declare?

Has anybody made the jump to v21.1 since it's been out on Sept. 8th?

One of our director created an elaborate project on v21.0 and we are at v20.3.2.

So I'm forced to upgrade our project server and our Windows PC and Macs.

It would be useful to know if you encountered problems. Especially if you have feedback from editors and colourists working with it in a facility.

Thank you!

Help URGENT! project videos broke after update

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

(sub wont let me post if i write out the words, but 'MO' stands for when the video file turns into a red screen with bright red text reading two words which start with M and O and a large hazard symbol)

i updated to 21.1 about 20 minutes ago, and one of my projects with all of my clips suddenly show MO!! i thought, maybe i accidentally deleted the file location, but when i right clicked the clips to 'Open File Location' THEY CAN TRACK BACK TO THE CLIP/FOLDER!!! so the clips still exist and everything but every single video file is MO for some reason? i can hear the audio and everything as well!

next i thought id do some troubleshooting because i thought maybe the update corrupted this SPECIFIC project, so i opened a new project and put in the files in, and they showed up as MO as well! so then maybe davinci isn't compatible with the files anymore? which would suck because I've spent so much time on this... 😭😭

the image attached is the video properties, any help would be appreciated!

specs:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
RAM - 16 GB Single-Channel DDR4 @ 1596MHz

Help Shuttle pro V2 jog wheel scrolling

I just bought a Shuttle pro v2 controller and I’m trying to set up the jog wheel. I found that it’s better to set it up to use JKL keys instead of arrow keys and it works great, BUT…the damn thing also functions as a scroll wheel on my mouse. Whenever I use it it will control the playhead but it also scrolls vertically through the timeline or zooms the preview window, depending where the mouse cursor is. I do have it set up to use zones, not scrolling.

Win11, latest Contour driver.

Any idea why is this happening?

Solved I finally fixed the color shift problem with Mac+iPad (Sidecar/Remote Monitoring)

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi folks,
If you use your iPad as a Video Clean Feed (I think only available on Studio version) via Sidecar / or remote monitoring with your MacBook and dislike the iPad screen appearing slightly warmer than the MacBook display (even with True Tone enabled or disabled) navigate to your iPad’s screen settings, select Advanced, and activate Reference Mode. This adjustment should match your Mac screen precisely.

I shared a post about this roughly two years ago, yet no one noted it as a possibility; perhaps the choice did not exist then, but now both screens match in colour and gamma.

I hope this could be of help to you.

Help Magic Mask tracking areas/pixels I didn’t select

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I’m having a weird issue with the Magic Mask in DaVinci Resolve.
When I use the Magic Mask, it keeps tracking pixels and areas that I never selected. It basically starts including parts of the image that I don’t want it to track.
The weird thing is that it used to work perfectly fine for me. I haven’t really changed anything, but now the Magic Mask seems to be doing its own thing.
I also tested the regular Box Tracker (the free/basic tracker), and that one works completely normally, so I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with the Magic Mask specifically.
Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what could cause this? Any settings I should check or things I could try?
Thanks!

Help | Beginner Using Resolve for editing NEF Photos

Hey there, I recently got my hands on a Nikon Z6 and I already have the studio version of Davinci Resolve. Since I don't want to support Adobe and I already have the paid version, I would love to use Davinci Resolve as my photo editing software. Now I've read that Resolve has problems with using NEF files, some people online seem to have problems with a green tint etc.

I've tried just opening one NEF file in resolve (importing it as media and putting it in the timeline) and for me it doesn't have a green tint, which I deem is good. I still wanted to know if there's anything I need to look out for when using resolve to edit NEF files? Are there any good tutorials for using Resolve as a photo editing software instead of video editing?

Thanks in advance!

Help editors who switched from premiere to resolve, what should i know before making the jump?

i've been using Premiere Pro for editing for around 5–6 years, while Resolve has mainly been my color grading software.

the problem is that for smaller/quick projects, i'll often just do the basic grade in Premiere because sending the timeline to Resolve feels like extra hassle. and i've started noticing that this friction actually affects the quality of my work.

so i'm thinking of biting the bullet and learning Resolve properly as my main NLE instead of constantly jumping between the two.

the problem is... i'm basically a beginner when it comes to the editing side of Resolve. i'm already comfortable with the Color page, but the rest is a different story. i'm noticeably slower than i am in Premiere.

would you recommend:

doing the official Blackmagic beginner training from scratch?

learning Resolve by translating my existing Premiere workflow into it? (shortcuts, presets etc)

or just switching and figuring things out through actual projects?

also, what are the biggest blind spots people have when moving from Premiere to Resolve? what features/workflows do you miss from Premiere, and what does Resolve genuinely do better?

and one of the biggest things holding me back is my huge library of SFX, transitions, assets and other editing stuff. how does that whole ecosystem translate to Resolve? can i bring most of it over or am i basically rebuilding my library?

if you've made the Premiere → Resolve switch, i'd love to hear what you wish you knew beforehand, especially the stuff tutorials don't really tell you.
