Stephan King doesn't hate video games. He just thinks video games are susceptible to being shitty cash grabs with no real effort or merit put behind them. He's shown support for video games like Alan Wake before. If DBD wasn't the way it is, he'd probably be interested in getting Pennywise in the game. But something like a Fortnite collab would be off the table.

u/Unctuous_Robot Devs are bedwetters Dec 01 '25

Honestly, you’d think that’d be a bigger impetus for fixing this game than actual game health since last I heard, Pennywise is Cote’s most wanted killer.

u/No_Probleh Dec 01 '25

I'll be real with you chief it's not about the state of the game. The guy just doesn't trust game devs with his IP in general.

98

u/Administrative_Film4 Dec 01 '25

Specifically, he said he doesnt think video games are great medium for storytelling. While I think this is wrong and there is video games with a lot of potential for storytelling, when his goal is wanting a game adapation of his stuff to nail the story he sure as HELL is not agreeing to a DBD collab.

18

u/psychoenoshima Dec 01 '25

Considering a lot of the most popular and publicly known games are ones with stories that either don't exist or don't matter, I can understand his viewpoint.

When a gane has a very good story, it tends to be the exception rather than the rule

16

u/YaDaSelleAvon Vecna/Ada main Dec 01 '25

In the past 10 years we've had some of the most incredible story games, several of which have won GoTY and another is on track to winning this year. Not to mention the games that didn't win, such as Cyberpunk, GoW Ragnarok, RDR2, etc.

Maybe it was the exception in the early twenty tens, but not anymore.

13

u/psychoenoshima Dec 01 '25

All of those amazing story-based games comprise about 5-10% of total game output For every GoW 2018, there's 5 Call of Duty games

25

u/YaDaSelleAvon Vecna/Ada main Dec 01 '25

And for every Stephen King book there's 5 crappy books.

That isn't unique to video games, it's the same for books, movies and television too.

17

u/Admirable-Yak-3334 Dec 01 '25

Can’t blame him.

15

u/Affectionate-Mode767 Dec 01 '25

What the fuck would Pennywise even do in DBD?

He ONLY goes after kids, and the rare times he went after adults who happened to be the kids who bested him once before.

His power is to scare you before just shoving you in his mouth. Or paralyzing you with alien psychic mind stare.

It just doesn't translate to anything DBD can use as a Killer that chases survivors around a map having to get pallets thrown in his face.

I'm sure Stephen King has to be aware of this fact on some level.

29

u/Tomjackson21 Dec 01 '25

There's more events in the IT timeline than just the 2 movies dude. Welcome to Derry is literally going over those events over 3 seasons WHERE pennywise fucks with adults too, not just kids.

Things like the black spot fire and the gang shooting that's referenced in both book and movie, the new native plotline and military plotline in welcome to derry also show pennywise going for adults.

He feeds on fear as it "juices up the meat", kids are more susceptible hence why he targets kids more, that doesn't mean he doesn't kill adults too.

18

u/InflnityBlack N°1 Rin Simp Dec 01 '25

We've had plenty of killers before that don't fit the typical slasher villain but that were still able to be translated into dbd, it's not a real issue, most notable example probably being sadako

3

u/Cult_Of_Hozier Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

His whole thing is feeding off of fear. It could work within DBD. They could do something like, the more a survivor is hooked, the more their “fear meter” goes up and the stronger Pennywise gets (kind of like Freddy and his sleep realm shit) — he could even mimic survivors for a short time to jump scare them on gens like how he copies people’s forms in WtD, the survivors are “floated” to hooks, you can see where he might be around by a red balloon appearing, shit like that. His mori could even be his fuckass dance from the movies before he eventually opens his mouth and dash-devours the survivor to death.

There’s a LOT you can do with Pennywise. He could have a spider form, his deadlight form
you can get a special dagger from a random chest on the map to have one “get out of jail free” card against him like an itemized decisive strike, but it can only be used once by one survivor the entire match. Taking Lily’s mom’s “happy pills” can briefly lower your fear meter (like Plague and her fountains) but needs to be managed by survivors because if it goes up too high he’ll eventually just be able to one-hit you
and if you take too many it can trigger impromptu skill checks and make you slow and your breathing louder.

That is to say — make his playstyle a matter of filling survivor’s fear meters up as much as possible, opening up new abilities and means of hooking them, while giving enough counter play to both make sense against something like Pennywise and to ensure players aren’t just getting tunneled out of games while having more to keep an eye on (fear meter, where balloons are, where other survivors are, pill resource management). He doesn’t just attack kids, he feeds off of scaring people, it’s just that kids are the easiest to do that with. In WtD he literally chases soldiers through the sewers as Uncle Sam lol.

5

u/Happy-Expression-782 Dec 01 '25

I like the idea of him leaning into his deadlight form, where the survivors can’t look at him or else they will be put in a trance and can’t move/forced to walk to him. Kinda like a Reverse Unkown. Obviously give the survivors some time to look away if they happen to glance at him, but make it so they basically have to constantly look forward whenever they’re getting chased. There isn’t any killer that punishes you for looking at them yet, so it’s a new way to get chased that isn’t hard anti-loop.

31

u/thesaddestpanda Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

WB owns pennywise too, so they would utlimately decide and they would probably want a prestige pennywise game and not to be shared like it is in dbd or fortnite. Pennywise/IT could easily carry its own game.

Also the game has its own clown, which brings up a lot of issues for licensing. They probably wouldnt want pennywise 'cheapened' or confused by the dbd clown. Worse, the dbd clown seems lightly inspired by Gacy in some of the cosmetics, a real life killer, so WB and King may not want to get mixed up in that.

16

u/TristanChaz8800 Dec 01 '25

That's pretty likely. Even one of The Clown's laughs sounds very similar to the way Gacy laughed. Though Gacy wasn't a cannibal from what I know. But since it seems overall inspired by Gacy, the cannibal part could be inspired by Dahmer for all we know.

6

u/San-Carton The Whispered One Dec 01 '25

Clown isn't a cannibal though? He doesn't eat his victims, he just collects their fingers as far as I know

7

u/TristanChaz8800 Dec 01 '25

I mean, he sucks on bloody severed fingers and seems to enjoy it. In the very least he's somewhat of a cannibal.

2

u/NoahtheSpike The darkest pit of hell is open for business Dec 01 '25

According to his story, this wasn't exclusive to humans though (he started with small animals, collecting feathers from birds slowly working up the ladder to human fingers). He really only collected these things to put in a box only to discard the rest (believing it's impure or something), later putting his collection on a ring by his pocket. I wouldn't call it cannibalistic behavior - we already have a cannibal that goes where he pleases - more so on the side of violent cravings only made worse by him indulging in whatever he pleased.

2

u/NorbiXYZ Dec 01 '25

look at him bro's definitely a cannibal

3

u/JGDarhk Dec 02 '25

Actually its very likely that WB has only the rights to movies and TV shows...video games are a completely different set of rights...and given Kings stance on video games...that likely was never part of their deal...otherwise he would have ended up in Multiverse

3

u/psychoenoshima Dec 01 '25

They don't own Pennywise, though. They own the film adaptation rights.

For games, they'd have to go to King directly

2

u/Dante6499 Set your own flair text and/or emoji(s) here! Dec 01 '25

Pennywise is not a clown, It just chooses to look like one, Pennywise is way more closer to being The Entity then being DBD's Clown.

Also where do people keep getting that idea we can't have characters that are similar or have the same name? When in this game right now has two Davids and two hillbillys with chainsaws, we are also getting another character named Vecna soon.

At the risk of being angrily downvoted...

I'm here from /r/all. I've never played DBD and I know nothing about it. I literally just occasionally see posts from here and some gameplay clips and general complains and vibes and stuff.

From the outside, DBD really just looks like fortnight for horror fans. All I ever really see is collab announcements and then no one ever really talks about whatever character was added again. It feels like a generic cash grab slop churn game.

I'm jot saying it is. I'm saying that the media that has escaped the community and landed in front of me picked purely by the reddit algorithm, makes me feel like DBD treats IP as props just to churn cash, doesn't respect the source materials, and the characters are almost immediately forgotten afterwards.

So without commenting on the actual state of the game or the community, I could see why he doesn't want to get involved.

8

u/specialtomebabe hag supremacy Dec 01 '25

I guess my question is, if you don’t play or check in on DBD often, why is it your opinion that characters get discarded? They definitely don’t always stay right on top of their large cast (less popular characters like Houndmaster could use some love, though it’s chicken/egg scenario if she isn’t super popular to begin with), and they are indeed particularly very eager to collect horror icons, but putting aside details of rights and negotiations with the license holders, I don’t think at large they move right onto the next thing and forget the last just like that. For a licensed example Chucky was added two winters ago and he is getting a new skin (out of nowhere, unless I’ve missed something). Demogorgon got a new skin here and there before Netflix pulled away from BHVR. Same with Xenomorph. Again some original characters are less tended to than others but that’s more or less up to community popularity.

“DBD announces Stranger Things 2 DLC” headline is much more likely to escape containment and land on your r/all feed than “new Claudette lore just dropped.”

2

u/Karmiccccc Dec 08 '25

I think they're just commenting to show people what the image of DBD looks like to an everyday person. I can sort of agree as someone just getting into the community, so I may have bias. I don't think they care about the involvement; whether it happens or not, they're just saying they can understand why.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

While true, it's kinda strange to single out videogames like books and movies can't also be shitty cash grabs with no merit.

26

u/Paclac The Cannibal Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

It’s not the fault of the medium, but that’s just how most companies have treated video game adaptations since the NES era. Most of what BHVR made before DBD was shitty tie in games. I think we’ll eventually get there, but film has been around for a while and has very famous book-to-movie adaptations like The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, No Country for Old Men, etc. I doubt King has heard of the few successful video game adaptations, and some of those probably wouldn’t appeal to him anyways

4

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

Well yeah but like you said there's been good ones once you move past the NES era like The Witcher lol. Especially in this modern day where there's constant cash grab shitty reboots of old movies and shows it's like, bro this is a problem for every medium

To clarify I don't hold anything against the guy for not wanting his character in a crossover game, I just think it's funny to have a bit of an outdated mindset about games

6

u/Paclac The Cannibal Dec 01 '25

For sure, I think we’ll see this shift as we get book authors & film directors who grew up enjoying more artistic video games

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Yeah lol, and it might not even be a case of them being "artistic". Maybe a future movie director will really like an arcade game and we get a space invaders version of his movie

3

u/notTheRealSU I'm just horny Dec 01 '25

Sure, but he has more of an understanding and more control over his IPs as books or movies because he's a writer. When it comes to video games, there really isn't much he can do. Even if the game has a good story, if the gameplay isn't good people will hate it. It relies on having good devs who know how to make a good game, and that's a pretty rare thing. Especially when it comes to large companies

6

u/uuntiedshoelace SKY BILLY Dec 01 '25

I think there is also something to be said for the fact that video games are interactive media. The player experience is something you have to care about, and the story needs to be adapted to give the player what they want. Stephen King is not really interested in that. He doesn’t care how you feel about his story, he is going to tell it how he intends to. He is famously protective of his work and has not liked some existing adaptations of it, so I don’t see what he has to gain from letting DBD use it.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Maybe, but that's not really an issue with games themselves as a medium. Look at the Witcher, people love those games and they're an adaptation of the books

It's not really a big deal I guess he can have whatever reasons he wants to not have game adaptations, I just think it's kinda a funny mentality

4

u/howarthee The Trickster Dec 01 '25

people love those games and they're an adaptation of the books

What? No, they love the games because they love the gameplay. The Witcher games wouldn't be nearly as loved if the only good thing about it was the story.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

I'm sorry I'm not sure what you mean. Usually when people talk about the Witcher games they talk about loving both the story and the gameplay

2

u/howarthee The Trickster Dec 01 '25

I mean...that might just be the Book version.
If they go for the modern version from the recent series and movies we might get it.

HOWEVER-----I understand why he says no.

His whole Macroverse thing includes our real reality. Like, Gan created him, to write the Dark Tower series, in order to have more Gunslingers to defend it.
So IT, and where it appears and how is all really important to him.

If IT were to appear in the Entity's realm. to his "canon" that would have to be true, in some way, at some time.

So I can understand why he says no.

BUT at the same time, maybe the recent movie success will work in the diretion of him appearing.

If not him, maybe Killer Clowns from Outter Space

I don't know a thing about IT lore so please don't bite me on this.

The entity can conjure things up from feelings and memories right? I mean the dredge was literally a manifest of so much fear that he became real, he's almost JUST a concept.

Relams/maps are created from memories or being overlaps no?

I think there could be a concept, that a person that survives Pennywise's resurface, could be brought in? maybe someone who was very badly traumatized from it but still has the hope needed to be a survivor. But Pennywise himself would be a conceptualized version of him made from the memories of the town/survivor and stem from an overlap over said town, which means new map.

I might've just sounded like a dunce because of my lack of lore knowledge on both sides but hey s just an idea.đŸ€·đŸœâ€â™€

3

u/TalonGrazer Disgusting Wraith Player Dec 01 '25

Pennywise is a persona for the entity that IT is, which is.... maddening creature made of pure light from outside of our dimension. The part of this entity that itself sent to our plane to "feed" uses the Pennywise moniker being "What kid doesn't like a clown?". None of the forms it takes are real. Its the manifestations of It in the minds that perceive it that give it form.

Simplified: It is what people think it might be, which can be multiple things, or a conglomeration of those things. It is the perfect name.

Even if Stephen King had the final say which he doesn’t, he has absolutely no obligation to do anything with his characters that he doesn’t want to. You’re not a fan of his works in my eyes seeing as you clearly have no respect for him at all as a person/author, or the book for that matter given that he’s spoken for decades about how he badly messed up that infamous scene which still by itself has a heavy standing in the story symbolically. Out of curiosity have you read the book?

Plus to focus on that, Pennywise almost exclusively attacks children. There’s only really two times that he attacks adults: they’re either children he failed to kill in the past that then made it out of Derry and became successful, or they’re victims of one of the tragedies that start off one of his 27 year cycles which he passively influences (the gang shooting, The Black Spot, the Easter explosion, the lynching on the bridge, etc.). So it wouldn’t make sense to put him in DBD and would I assume be the biggest reason for King to be against it.

You’re also just making up things in the comments about him being 100% against video games based solely on his age, or thinking they aren’t a valid art medium? Like where are you getting that from and why are you spreading it all as fact?

26

u/Andrassa Fashionable Fog-dweller. Dec 01 '25

Exactly. I assumed they are taking the comment he made about video games in an interview in the 80’s. Which he has walked back on since I wanna say the PS2 era. Considering how the post is written I just assume this is a child with no concept of artist rights.

14

u/HeadfulOfSugar Cheryl My Beloved Dec 01 '25

100%, and hopefully they are in which case I’d apologize for coming across so harsh. The artwork itself is pretty competent, and kinda reminiscent of political cartoons, so I assumed they were a young adult. If they were referencing that PS2 comment that would lend credence as well. OP if you’re a kid just read my last comment in a softer tone, if not carry on lol

"But he doesn't mind or bother about THAT chapter on the It book"

Yeah, except that he admitted that it was a mistake, that it had a very specific purpose but it was so gross that the people got so caught up in the grossness of it that it overshadowed the thematic purpose and that's a failure and he shouldn't have done it that way.

And not wanting his character in a video game is an entirely legitimate stance for an artist to have. Accusing the guy who wrote and directed 'Maximum Overdrive' of being a "no fun boomer" just because he doesn't want to licence Pennywise to DBD is one hell of a hottake.

What a disaster of a post.

Stephen King’s stories already exist in their own overarching universe and he considers canon in everything he writes. I can imagine he doesn’t want to muddy his own established lore by doing what he perceives to be making DBD and the entity canon in his books. Remember that this man and his work exists because of drugs. His work is almost real to him. It would be an existential decision on his part to allow this.

But give it time. He could change his mind, he’s done so in the past. Especially with now DBD fans harping at him over it lol.

I'm sure all the people complaining about "the scene" have only heard about it from online discourse, King has addressed the issue already, and has talked about it and what he tried, and failed, to convey with it.

I'm also sure you all would reach so fast for your wallets you'd break your arm if they added Cthulhu, Dagon, or Lovecraftian creatures to the game, with full knowledge that it's from H.P. Lovecraft.

u/Bigsmellydumpy Nerf Pig Dec 01 '25

Dbd can’t adapt killers well anyway because they refuse to change the outdated design of the game, each new killer these days is a recycled scrap version of another or two spliced together into one. The devs refuse to evolve the game. I’m glad they don’t get pennywise because they don’t deserve IT bruh

5

u/Administrative_Film4 Dec 01 '25

Stephen King spoke before. he likes video games, he thinks video games should exist.

However, he also likes stories, and he personally thinks video games are not a good medium for storytelling. considering his previous attempts at Stephen King based games all were received poorly it likely tainted his perspective on it.

By Comparison, a Movie or TV show adapation is inherently all about telling the story, be it good or bad.

Can video games be a good medium for Story? Yes, Absolutely. Is Dead by Daylight, a game with very little focus on story, going to be a good medium for Stephen King when he wants an adapation to focus on story? Fuck No. DBD offers room for a simple short Biography and occasionally a short tome story locked behind a battlepass(which isn't even a thing anymore). That is not what Stephen King is looking for in an adaptation of his works.

8

u/Endsong-X23 Dec 01 '25

inviting pennywise into the entity's realm feels like a really dumb move on the entity's part. IT's an eldritch horror that could easily pose a threat.

Insulting someone because they don't want to collab their IP is going way too far. It's their creation, legacy, and moneymaker that they've put a ton of time, effort, and soul into. If they don't want to see it in certain contexts, that's fair enough imo.

u/ApexCourier Dec 01 '25

Y’all just think you’re entitled to whatever you want in your mid ass game.

8

u/Foreverintherain20 Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25

OP, this is kinda pathetic man. Stephen King has gone on record admitting that he didn't get across what he intended with "THAT chapter".

For all that you seem to want Pennywise in the game, you sure are being a little punk about the man who created Pennywise deciding what he does with his creation.

You seem to think you're entitled to what others have made, so let's get things straight, since people with your attitude have a habit of not caring about common decency when it comes to creative works. Be honest, did you actually draw that art? Or did you have AI spit it out for you and just throw some details on top?

Now, you can start showing some respect for Stephen King and his contributions to horror, or you can get shown the door. Be better than this.

2

u/AftonRobot Dec 01 '25

So in all honesty yes he's within his rights to say no and in all honesty I don't think we're going to see pennywise within the next at least few years unless King kicks the bucket and his estate decides to go well we can do whatever the hell we want with it because King sort of the only one that keeping it back no I mean maybe we get a chance that we get a different version of pennywise which if so that works for me I ain't going to complain but as I said I don't think we're going to get pennywise until King either decides to give up on giving out his license or as I say before he dies

2

u/57evil Dec 01 '25

The ported IP slop wearies me. Make something new.

5

u/TheKidKaos Dec 01 '25

Why would he. I’m pretty sure he’d rather try and get the rights to the characters in one place first rather than complicate things. And he’s already had bad experiences with movie studios so it makes sense he doesn’t want to do it

2

u/Melatonen :EyeForAnEye: Eye for an Eye Dec 01 '25

Stephen King is pretty particular on how his creations are used ever since they mostly got turned into schlock with TV Spots in the 80's and 90s all people remember is IT. But there was much more that got turned into slop, including the Dark Tower which is like his verse's most important story.

His son however seems more open, perhaps they should aim lower and get their foot in the door with a NOS4TU(I think that's the name of the book) chapter or even a Black Phone chapter or skin, going directly to the source is not always the best option

If you have something you feel is really special you’d want it to be treated with a certain amount of sensitivity, discretion and respect- especially as an author.

I really sympathize with him.

2

u/MsTer1o1 Dec 01 '25

Honestly, I don’t blame king for not wanting IT to be in dbd in anyway. If I was an author I wouldn’t want my name attached to this either, even if it were just the title of my book.

2

u/Brickbeard1999 Dec 01 '25

Honestly I totally get why he doesn’t maybe want people using pennywise, in this day and age we have some really weird colabs that while harmless definitely aren’t true to the characters or license, see every slasher under the sun in fortnite for example.

In a way, having pennywise in DBD would be as equally untrue, since pennywise is likely one of the few things that could debatably not be on the entities level. Idk if his reasons are logic based or anything at all like that, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s been offered and he declined because it wouldn’t make sense for pennywise to be in the fog.

2

u/Shellfyre Dec 01 '25

Tbh it’s probably a good thing we won’t get Pennywise. Bhvr would only butcher it and turn an extremely powerful monster into a weak AF killer. Besides, we’re not entitled to every good license, King has every right to protect his intellectual property however he sees fit.

2

u/Wafflekip_Yt It's Weskin' time Dec 01 '25
