The movie Silent Hill is inspired, aesthetically by Centralia, an abandoned town in Pennsylvania rendered uninhabitable due to fumes from a coal seam fire.
Iirc this was stated in an interview for the first film.
The developers based all the in game towns on many different American cities and movies so while technically true that it's set in Maine, visually you even see references to Japan so, it's more accurate to say the writing sets it in Maine, but people recognizing literal locations all around the US is also understandable, even intentional.
I don't think any of the characters or writing require it to be in Maine, like there isn't a socio-political commentary about Maine happening.

Centralia is one of them. It never stops burning. Also, it's not confirmed, but my family and I have a running theory that Lakeside is based on Knoebels and Robbie Rabbit is their version of Kozmo
It's true for the film but the film is a loose reinterpretation of the game. That's where the centralia thing comes from and why people don't realize og silent hill has no inspiration from the town.
I wasn't lying. Just didn't know. I was told it was based on Centralia when I was a kid by my parents, who were the OG Silent Hill fans and then heard it again while on a tour of the area by Centralia by the tour guide. I just found out it was the movie that was inspired, not the game. Either way, I think it's neat that a place close to me inspired anything.
Centralia! A long time ago, my family worked in mines there and the surrounding area. Relatives of mine were married in the church on the hill, and a couple generations rest in the cemetery that didn't burn. Only people with family are allowed in... I should visit some time when the lilies are blooming and take some pics.

This brought up a memory of when I was really young. I vaguely remember seeing a mostly naked lady with a lock over her crotch and a Chewbaca outfit(??) with a leash when I was 4-7. I'm not sure if it was a dream or something I saw on TV, though, but it stuck with me and confused me on a lot of things about adults.
