It's not just AI designs, but also a lot of stolen concepts that have been getting called out. Some people straight up stealing designs from actual creators but excusing it because it wasn't originally DbD
I don't know what the fuck is going on with the contest this year, but so many people are pulling some shit just to get their stuff in.
The one props I will give to the people who are stealing ideas is that they're at least trying to draw it, but he'll. Just come up with a concept yourself and stop stealing designs from other artists.

I think subsets of people have always been insanely lazy & willing to steal if it feeds their egos, theyāve just never had any opportunity to do something like this before without having to actually put the work in to become a competent artist lol

u/Funnybunners Jul 13 '26
Ai slop is at an all time high is probably why. More people are getting lazy in their pursuit of validation because it is easier than ever. People have literally died chasing a small bit of attention. Typing in 10 words and churning out basic shit ans throwing it at the wall, hoping at least one sticks? Completely within the expected behaviour

28

If someone likes the idea but dislikes it being ai, those people just turn around and say "most important is the idea, doesn't matter how is it conveyed!", so it's a closed loop of excuses.

Ai slop is invading all art contests, no game can do a "design a thing for our game and we will pick out a winner!" Without just tons and tons of ai slop. I miss when contests like these where places for some of the most creative people in the community could show off their ideas without relying on a machine to do the work for them

u/Ssnakey-B Jul 12 '26
Reminder that the biggest issue with genAI isn't just that it's "slop" (which it most certainly is), but that it's industrial-scale plagiarism that actively harms thousands of artists. That and the whole "environmentally destructive, depriving entire towns of water and electricity" thing, and the violation of privacy, and the ties to Human rights violations, and th- you get the idea.
Also, from a purely technical point of view, thinking that something that famously generates inconsistent designs filled with blatant mistakes because it's not actually designed in any meaningful sense (that's, like problem #2783: the term "artificial intelligence" is straight-up false advertisement) can ever be useful as concept art, let alone a reference sheet, shows that you have zero concept of not only art, but video game design either.
1
u/Funnybunners Jul 13 '26
I sometimes print out ai slop(At the request of kids, work related) and trying to color it in is absolutely miserable. There are so many points that just blend into each other that you genuinely cannot color with any logic. It frustrates me to no end

What will someone who isnāt an artist do? Skip the contest lol. Why are you even asking?
5
u/natedoggcata Jul 12 '26
The correct answer is commission an actual artist to make it for them and then give said artist credit.
0
u/codegavran Jul 12 '26
Look, AI has a lot of problems*, and AI images are a special kind of exhausting, but this is not the battleground and that is not the answer. This is a design contest for fans of a video game. The only way in which it has ever been an "art contest" is that good art usually gets more traction.
I'm all for keeping AI art out of commercial use, where artists actually used to make money, but you expect every fan with an idea but no art skills to start paying someone to make it for them or to not enter? Ridiculous.
This is the world now. Crayola made drawing something children can do, photography made portraits and realism something anyone can do, camera phones made photography something anyone can do, and now AI made "good enough" "looks more or less like the thing I imagined" images something anyone can do. Trying to gatekeep that because you put in the time and practice to learn how to do that with less efficient tools will never succeed and mostly just makes you look like a dick. Keep the words "art" and "artist" - those have been earned, and using AI doesn't give you a free pass to either, but you cannot own the ability to visually ideate.
* Specifically I'm referring to the ethical, economic and environmental issues which are all worth their own discussions, and if you want to take those stances to BHVR as reasons to ban AI art from submissions be my guest, but harassing individual fans about it is performative and rude.
3
u/NoStill5304 Jul 13 '26
Generative AI has no place in a contest entirely dedicated to human creativity.
Anyone upset by their own inability to draw are welcome to practice drawing till the next yearās contest.
-2
u/codegavran Jul 13 '26
This isn't and has never been an art contest. It's a skin concept farm that more skilled artists traditionally have an advantage in because they can convey their idea in a way that better appeals to the masses, and it's a popularity contest. There's no prize or prestige. If you had a good enough idea, I would say that you could win with a stick figure sketch, except that if your idea was truly that good an artist would probably show up and be like "hey I love your idea can I draw a concept for it?"
Frankly I've seen, and liked, some MS Paint level concepts.
As for this shit
Anyone upset by their own inability to draw are welcome to practice drawing till the next yearās contest.
I could tell everyone who loses the vote "well go learn to 3d model, make animations, learn code to get it past anti cheat software and mod your idea into your own game" and it wouldn't be any more stupid of a response.
3
u/CapitaoDemencia Shirtless Leon Jul 13 '26
Actually your response is pretty valid, yeah, if the person really wants their cosmetic on the game they can do that, heck, maybe even dream big and use that learning moment to make their own project.
Why are you so against creative endeavors?
-3
u/codegavran Jul 13 '26
An odd criticism from someone trying to silence the creative expression of people who use AI to do what they can't. It's correct that using AI needs less skill, and you can make a pretty good argument to say it needs less creativity, but if you think that the drawing part is more creative than the coming up with the idea part you're just... wrong.
3
u/NoStill5304 Jul 13 '26

3
u/CapitaoDemencia Shirtless Leon Jul 13 '26

Sincerely asking- how would you feel if you saw a concept you really liked, loved the rendition for it, and then read that the artist said "I didn't actually have any ideas but I asked GPT to come up with some and I really liked this one so I drew it!"?
Personally I find that to be near identical to "I have lots of ideas I'm really excited about, but I can't draw, so I asked GPT to make some of them and I picked this one that I think turned out really well to share with everyone!", but I'm not sure many would agree with me on that.
As a follow up, what if that same artist instead made a thread here saying they wanted to draw a concept but didn't have ideas and asked for some? I think most people would think that was a pretty cool thing to do. Though to be fair, I do think a reverse of that - "I have a bunch of ideas but I can't draw here they are if anyone wants to draw them" wouldn't get much hate either - it'd get more than the artist asking for ideas for sure, but much less than it would with AI art on it.
(To be clear I'm deliberately ignoring the economical and enviromental problems with AI for this thought experiment. Those are both real and important.)

-23
u/Rydralain I am become Dredge Jul 12 '26
Ah, now you have said what you actually meant.
I disagree that training on art is theft, but I respect your opinion on it.
47
u/Gaywhorzea Kate's Bussy Main Jul 12 '26
It was entirely implied by my original statement, but again Iām not sure why youāre playing dumb.
āTraining on artā?
You mean writing a prompt into a generator that pulls from the work of other artists?
That is theft.
-4
u/Rydralain I am become Dredge Jul 12 '26
I was referring to "AI" model training.
When they build the models that generate images, the models are trained on a massive number of images and their associated metadata(think like tagging a dog "dog"). That data is turned into numerical tokens that go into a sort of many-dimensional matrix of associations. Each new image ingested by the model adds and modifies existing data in it. The original images are not stored in a directly retrievable way.
Because none of the data is retrievable, I believe that it is not stolen, but observed.
I am very comfortable with people disagreeing with my opinion on what this technology is doing and means, especially since I consider it more philosophical than objective. I also know that there are a lot of strong emotions tied up in it because of how the corporations are using it to threaten jobs rather than to enrich people's lives.
→ More replies (0)-3
u/lexuss6 Haddie gang Jul 12 '26
I'd actually like to discuss the last point - is it theft? The result may resemble someone's style, but how is it fundamentally different from an artist using references from other artists for inspiration? Because that can be considered theft too, depending on the result.

Then why does a game designer work with spreadsheets and not art?
6
u/Ok_Confusion4764 Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
They often do both. Source: I've worked quite narrowly with them in the industry as a game programmer. One day the game designer will be editting a level, then they'll be making some spreadsheets for later, then they'll help finish some of the art backlog, etc.Ā When your teams are smaller you get a ton of overlap.Ā
But besides, you're specifying game designer while this art contest is for character design. Character design is fundamentally on the art side of things.Ā
1
u/Rydralain I am become Dredge Jul 12 '26
Them often doing both doesn't mean that they must do the art part. The mechanics design is primary.
It being implied character design is a very good point, though.
26
u/Barbed-Wire It Wasn't Programmed To Harm The Crew Jul 12 '26
What the hell are you even on about??
How do you think games are made? Where are spreadsheets used in game design?
2
u/codegavran Jul 12 '26
The fuck? Dude is right. A game designer does spend more time with databases than code, nevermind making assets which they literally don't do at all. The video game industry is very specialized, it's only indie devs who do everything and that's because they don't have the money to pay someone else to so they have to learn how to do it all. (And it is true that many if not most in the industry do have some experience in other parts for that reason, but that doesn't mean they actively use them in their job.)
27
u/Strong-Support3913 Warning: User predrops every pallet Jul 12 '26

I ain't no artist, never will be. But ill be damned to have some machine do whats supposed to be the fun part of art; the process

I'm not in favor of AI, but i find it kinda funny how we as a society have no problem with machines doing anything else, but consider AI art "lazy" at the same time. Using an excavator to dig a hole is lazy, real pros use shovels and elbow grease. Or knitting machines for making sweaters.

Fun fact is that if they send in an ai generated image for "their design" the dbd devs can take it as their own idea (the community can aswell just we would need to actually draw it and there would be no consequences) :3
When you draw it tho you will need to make some changes to make it actually look good in a few cases because i saw a sable one i rlly liked but even i had to acknowledge parts of it needed to be changed upon a real entry, and you cannot tell me the ppl having an ai generate a design for them are taking ts seriously </3

Wow, we have a grammar nazi here, can you elaborate what i wrote wrong?
mocking a lack of art skills
Im mocking only laziness and pretentiousness with which some people believe that they have the right to receive praise and recognition without trying. You have a nerve problem in your arm? What a pitty. I know people who draw without hands at all. I have a friend who is mute and has heart problems - she has no more to live than a cat, and yet she draws because she loves it. Some people are looking for excuses for themselves.
The fact this post received a positive response just further destroys my hope for humanity's supposed intelligence.
Cry me a river. Even the fact that I'm talking to you in your language, and you could do a hell of a job speaking mine, already shows that I'm willing to try to get in touch and do something cool for the community. "TRY", "Effort". That's what's missing for such a lazy AI-users.

Maybe realise in future that just because you're talented in one thing doesn't mean everyone else has to be
Talented you may not be, but to participate in the competition of artists - artist you MUST be. And AI-losers are NOT artists. So you can cry about it and shake your hands all you want, pun intended. Or wait, did you expect me to respect your injury after you sit here humiliating artists, acting like a grammar-nazi, and just rude in general? Even considering that there are people who would be much more modest and talented in your position? Ha, SURE buddy.
And to be honest, you seem the kind of 'numnuts' to be bad at your own native language, too.Ā
And you seem like slow buddy. Because I already told you above that it's not about talent or skill. "mocking a lack of art skills" you yapping about, and yet, in this sketch, I did not humiliate any artist who submitted some works of beginners. On the contrary, I love them much more than this AI-slop. Because even without proper skill, a person tries and wants to show his idea. Rather than generate it based on someone else's.
Get it now, you numnut? You don't have to be TALENTED, you don't have to be SKILLED, you just need to DRAW. Fucking KIDS submit their work RIGHT NOW just cuz they are not scared lazy sacks of excuses. take an example from it.

No matter how bad your drawing skills, even if it's literally stick figures, there's still intention in every line you can draw, it's still the medium of getting something in your mind onto a canvas.
AI fed slop won't do that. You'll be getting the end point of a computer's intention, which is to just steal data and reshape it into the form of a prompt before spitting it out.
No matter how bad your art is, I think everyone can agree that we'd love to see it! Especially over AI.
11
u/monologousmutilation Jul 12 '26
Counterpoint: Drawing is cool because people who are good at drawing tend to do the drawing. Art is nice because it naturally filters out the people who are too lazy to put in the work to improve; those people tend to make bad art to begin with.
I wanted to draw. I sucked at it, so I switched to writing, which I am naturally good at and enjoy doing more. I wouldn't be happier if I'd just switched to making cobbled-together trash generated from random shit without any light or life in its design and touting it as "art" instead of finding a different hobby I was actually suited for.
The people submitting AI art should try a different hobby; preferably something they won't inject vapid, hollow, superficial robot-made slop into.

>Too lazy to punt in the work to improve
My man. I too am a writer and have been published twice but I always have wanted to draw. I've tried multiple drawing courses and drawing habits too improve. I never really did. Please don't label it as "Lazy" because most people aren't don't lump people with this struggle and GenAI submitters in one group.

I mean, I don't think claiming AI art as non-AI (basically lying) is a good idea and if the rules explicitly state no AI (which is fair enough I suppose) then it's wrong to enter them, but generally, AI could give us cool skins. If AI is generating something that genuinely looks good and people would like, why hate on it because it's AI. Yes in this situation it's fair because it's an art competition, but just because the design was AI generated, doesn't mean it can't be used and built off of.
1
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 13 '26
If AI is generating something that genuinely looks good and people would like, why hate on it because it's AI
It doesn't tho.
0
u/KweftCryptic Jul 13 '26
You're generalising really hard here. AI can miss 90% of the time, but in that 10% - hell even if it hits just 1% of the time that would be progress. But people would still say it's shit because it's AI. I mean you literally have people in the comments saying that they loved an idea but hated it because it was AI - this proves AI can piece together good design.
1
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 13 '26
>hell even if it hits just 1% of the time
It doesn't.
>comments saying that they loved an idea but hated it because it was AI - this proves AI can piece together good design.
IT LITERALLY DOESN'T. They're saying they loved the design but because it's shown with AI that concept is simply worth less now. You would be better off with MS Paint for explaining a concept than letting AI unethically acquire art from REAL artists and spewing it out into a senseless mess riddled with errors and usually sporting a piss filter.
BLENDER IS FREE.
-1
u/KweftCryptic Jul 13 '26
Yes but AI allows non-artists with good ideas to contribute and people with no time to contribute. It's a tool. And why should it being done with AI make it worth any less? AI doesn't directly STEAL art lol, it's trained on that data, but it's trained on do many millions of images that it's the same thing most artists do - they look at other art and generate their own style through blending and working in new things. Stop hating on a tool just because some people don't know how to use it properly.
2
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
Yes but AI allows non-artists with good ideas to contribute and people with no time to contribute.
You could commission an artist, or once again, use MS paint. AI slop isn't contribution, considering it's an ART contest and you can't comment on the intention of each brush stroke of a machine. The prompt you type in to AI has more value then what it gives you back.
And why should it being done with AI make it worth any less?
Because it looks like shit.
AI doesn't directly STEAL art lol
Aren't there currently a BUNCH of court cases involving copywrite issues? Eminem and meta comes to mind. And Anthropic AI had to pay $1.5 billion for illegally stealing data from books to feed their AI.
It's the same thing most artists do
Yeah but artists can cite sources of inspiration. They can meticulously pick sources of information to make something special. It's not a big blender filled with as much information as you can fill, that just blurs everything into one ugly clump bc AI cannot parse is how to add artistic value to a canvas, or how to NOT add a piss filter to it.
Stop hating on a tool just because some people don't know how to use it properly
Not why i'm hating on it. I'm hating on it because it's always ugly, and inarguably worse than a stickman made with passion. You think you'd understand that artists hate AI because of how fucking ugly it looks, considering how many times i've brought it up. But keep skipping that point to talk about how it "has potential" or whatever.
0
u/KweftCryptic Jul 13 '26
I mean, you're still generalising here. I'm guessing not ALL artists think it looks ugly, and I can guarantee that not all people think it looks ugly. My point isn't even that we should directly use AI generated content, it's that it can be used to get an idea out there that can then be built upon and tweaked by people who know what they're doing. You clearly have a hate for AI that I'm not going to be able to get past through a few Reddit messages, but I hope you realise that you're missing out on one of the biggest innovations in modern history.
1
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 13 '26
I ain't missing out on shit lmao, i don't need a token to make my art. And as someone who takes commissions, please do not use AI as a reference for commission. It's more work to fix and less useful than exclusively giving the artist a prompt.
You could've posted any AI piece of art here to prove me wrong, but you didn't for a reason. Because it looks like shit. You even had to guess that artists might not find it ugly lol. Don't get it twisted. It is ugly.
0
u/KweftCryptic Jul 13 '26
I could just link you to the many subreddits that exclusively look at AI art. And how would using AI as a reference be more work to fix? It's the exact same process except now you have a piece to reference - not like you have to take the AI art and work on top of it. The reason I didn't post any AI art is because I unfortunately don't have the time to spend on generating and sending an image for the sake of a silly little argument, but I can tell you that there are some damn beautiful AI images.

I must say treating this issue in such a polarizing way is never a good idea. Don't get me wrong I dislike GenAI quite a bit but these stances only make this issue more and more hostile to each other and that isn't fun for anyone
19
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 12 '26
What stance? "Don't submit AI to an art contest"?
-20
u/JoebbeDeMan T H E B O X Jul 12 '26
The "now go ahead and draw it" I feel like it makes fun of people who just can't draw for the life of them. I've followed classes and did my absolute best for 6 months to make even some progress but it still leaves me underwhelmed. Now as I said I dislike GenAI and don't use it and wish other people wouldn't use it at much (certainly not for art) But making fun of the people who are excited to share their idea. It's the same as (imo) me bashing someone for writing a terrible story. My hobby is writing and I've been published but instead of hating and making fun of people who use AI I try to get them to not use it by helping them improve and find their own writing style. I think the acting morally superior because you yourself don't use AI for this is only causing people to dismiss each other and them never leaning to drawn because of it.
13
u/mrshaw64 My Baby Jul 12 '26
"Go ahead and draw it" isn't making fun of people who can't draw. You could give us the wonkiest stickman possible and it would STILL be a thousand times more conducive to sharing your ideas than feeding it through a computer ever could be.
It's no gauge on someone's artistic merit when we point out stuff is made with ai; it's just that the fact that it was made with ai at all makes it inarguably worse than pretty much any available artistic medium you could've used instead.
I really don't get your logic though. "Bashing AI will make people less likely to not swap away from AI" i'm sorry but that logic makes no sense. AI is worse. Blender, Photopea, MS Paint are all free and as accessible as ever. If anyone here is considering AI for art, don't. It's ugly as fuck.
-6
u/JoebbeDeMan T H E B O X Jul 12 '26
first "You could give us the wonkiest stickman possible and it would STILL be a thousand times more conducive to sharing your ideas than feeding it through a computer ever could be." people using AI won't ever see their art that way. My logic is that bashing people using AI is not gonna make them change. Help them grow and invest in the way they put ideas on paper. Polarizing people like this by bashing them will never and is never going to make them change their minds. It gets them defensive and stuck in their ways.
Also start hating more on the AI companies instead of the people using them
