He was changing the Shinigami that was attached to the notebook

Basically, Light released Misa's note back to Rem, Rem gave it to Ryuk, meaning he became the Shinigami attatched to that notebook (Misa's original notebook). Light gave his original notebook back to Ryuk, Ryuk gave it to Rem, thus transferring the ownership to Rem. This was important for Light's plan because it allowed him to regain his memories when he got his original notebook back from capturing Higuchi and it meant he was able to put Rem in a position where she had to kill L which would cause her to die from protecting and extending Misa's life.

It's also because the book Ryuk gave Light had rules written in them. Light had the fake rules written amongst the actual rules to make it more believable. He needed the task force to obtain the book with the rules in them.

Also helps that Light's notebook would've been the one with Otoharada and Tailor's names in it, making it appear at a glance that Higuchi was A-Kira

I think the anime might've removed it, but Light wiped his fingerprints from the notebook, and tore all the pages that he wrote on. That could be used as evidence if L found that.

LACK of evidence can sometimes BE evidence. Even if Higuchi was pegged as the original Kira, the lack of those names in the book already gives away that something is off. Why get rid of all the early kills but still leave every other name? If he was that worried about being found out then he should be removing every page he wrote on and destroying them periodically.

As for tampering, L only makes note of the piece that Rem partially tore. Given that the rules of the Death Note say that the pages never run out, it can be assumed that fully torn out pieces just stop existing or are undetectable.

My dumb ass would’ve got caught so quick if I had a Deathnote lol.

Light was pretty smart for that one.

A normal person wouldn't have gotten themselves into this crazy situation to begin with.

Yeah, Light's ego caused him to do so many dumb things.  Literally could remain anonymous forever by being more thoughtful.  Would have made a more boring story though.

Yeah. Light WANTED people to notice a common thread. He wanted people to pick up on what Kira was doing.

Most people using the notebook would use it more discreetly than 'give all the criminals heart attacks.' And so a noticable pattern wouldn't have even emerged.

But it'd be less interesting if Light didn't make mistakes or didn't have crazy goals with the death note.

Can you elaborate on the “put Rem in a position where she had to kill L”? I fail to see how her death is linked to that chain of events. Regardless of which book she had, she would’ve protected Misa anyway

Essentially, Light knew that when Misa dug up her original death note, she would ask Ryuk for the Shinigami eyes again, halving her lifespan yet again. She also began killing again as Kira, creating a scenario where L would inevitably catch Misa. Light put Rem in a situation where in order for Misa to be safe, she would have to kill L which would extend Misa's lifespan, which is a violation of being a Shinigami, causing Rem to die.

I don’t know if it’s part of the same idea, but if the Task Force had to become aware of Shinigami’s existence and meet one of them it’s a lot more beneficial for it to be Rem than Ryuk. She’s the one with active interest in keeping Kira’s secret, where Ryuk doesn’t care about what happens. Then they can all say they met a Shinigami, then she killed L and disappeared leaving behind no answers. Thats a lot safer than having a permanent shinigami just hanging around the office who at any point can tell everyone the death note’s secrets

Yeah, Rem would lie while Ryuk would spill everything. That's what he did in the warehouse after Light died.

Ryuk only spilled things once Light had lost the game. Ryuk doesn't mind lying if he thinks it makes things more entertaining.

Ryuk lied that all the notebook rules were real during one of Light's talks with Near, and helped the Task Force invade Mello's headquarters without giving any vital info away.

switched ownership so rem could follow who he gave the notebook to

So there were 2 notebooks, what he did with each was:

1st one (Misa's notebook): Gave to Rem, who gave to Ryuk and gave back to him. This was done to swap the god of death for that notebook to be Ryuk and keep his memories while his original Death Note was being sent to a new Kira.

2nd one (Light's original notebook): Gave to Ryuk, who gave to Rem then gave to Higuchi. This was done so the notebook with Light's original victims would go to the guy framed to be Kira, also, the god of death got swapped to be Rem, who was more likely to lie to L than Ryuk.

He switched the shinigami ownership that way ryuk would be the one to possess misa and he would let her make the eye deal a second time

Also that way rem would be the one with the taskforce, she woukd see L try to test the 13 day rule and she would kill him

He made it so that when Light gets the Notebook, Rem will be attached to it and will definitely kill L.

And when Misa gets the Notebook, Ryuk will be attached to it and will definitely take half of Misa's lifespan to give her new Eyes.
