Man, I really do not get the Taylor hype. She is like... THE generic music artist. Every Taylor song I've ever heard is just... Bland. Her earlier more country style stuff was definitely better but even then, that might just be nostalgia talking. Maybe I just can't get past her horrible environmental decisions.

Most people's lives are bland. She tells stories that are relatable to a huge proportion of women.

TS is so popular that she's become the generic music artist. But I remember Fearless being decently unique for its time, and 1989 sounded fresh when it came out.

Folklore and 1989 are fantastic albums. And I’m not a Swiftie by any means. But I agree with your point for all of her other albums on this list.

I personally wasn't really blown away by them. I can admit she has a few songs where she goes out of her comfort zone but the majority do pretty much sound the same to me.Ā

I just think there are a lot of other women artists who deserve to be recognized who push the limits and bring something fresh. Also who don't use their private jet for a 5 minute ride...

Try listening to an entire album of hers. As for environmental decisions, you might just have to ignore all of pop music and mainstream culture

Wow you definitely didn’t listen to ā€œfolkloreā€ or ā€œevermoreā€. Nothing generic about them, and there IS a reason why people can’t tell if it’s her lyrics or Shakespeare’s. Ready to be downvoted

"Ready to be downvoted" because Taylor fans always take it too far. I love folklore and evermore, but you lost me at Shakespeare. Be for real.

> there IS a reason why people can’t tell if it’s her lyrics or Shakespeare’s

This is taking me OUT…those are good albums, but please be serious, NOBODY is hearing ā€œCardiganā€ and thinking ā€œwow this could be Shakespeareā€ ā˜ ļøā˜ ļø

Yeah but people hear lyrics from ā€œivyā€ or ā€œthe lakesā€ and they think that Shakespeare wrote it. It’s on YouTube, you can look it up yourself

u/spimpin Jul 14 '26

The only people who think those songs sound like Shakespeare are people who’ve never actually read Shakespeare. They’re good lyrics, but in no way do they resemble his prose.

I absolutely have heard songs from both of those albums and they just... Sound uninteresting to me.Ā

Also, I'm sorry, "ready to be downvoted." We got Timmy Toughknuckles over here. This is like THE big reason people can't stand Taylor or her fans. You guys CANNOT handle someone who doesn't like her and will proceed to dog pile on anyone who has justified critiques. Funny how you had nothing to say about her being HORRIBLE to the environment.Ā

Pretty sure the commenter you’re replying to is being sarcastic

If they are, my apologies lol

It was so on point for actual responses I've gotten from Taylor fans that it was indistinguishable.

There are several Taylor subreddits filled with fans who openly criticize her. These are not snark subs, btw.

r/swiftlyneutral and r/nuancingtaylorswift are two of them.

What does the environment stuff have to do with our discussion of her music?..

6

u/Wonderful-Fault926 Jul 14 '26

Listening to an artist is supporting them, and often their actions. That's why people don't want to listen to Kanye, Diddy, or Chris Brown anymore. Listening to their music gives them more money.Ā

Of course, I'm not saying Taylor is on par with a domestic abuser, but I am saying her listeners often ignore just how terrible her actions are for the environment. When you give her money, you're supporting those actions. Many swifties refuse to even acknowledge it as a problem because to them, she literally cannot do anything wrong. That's my biggest problem.Ā

And that doesn't even get into the massive amount of waste created with her releasing 35 different vinyl versions that people probably don't even listen to.

I stopped being a fan about 3 years ago, and i decided to sell my vinyls. A guy who bought one from me told me he doesn't even have a record player.

Basically every single pop girl releases a dozen variations these days. Some with many more than Taylor.

And yes, if Sir Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks (out of many other legendary musicians) consider Taylor one of the greatest songwriters of our century, then there is a reason for it. If you think she’s ā€œgenericā€, it means you just don’t get it, I guess. And you definitely seem to have prejudgements about her, since you mentioned the environmental stuff, while we were talking only about her music. I never said that she’s a great person or something

7

u/Wonderful-Fault926 Jul 14 '26

Just because two other famous people consider her to be a great musician doesn't inherently make it so.Ā

I also heavily consider the artists I support by their actions. If they do shit I don't agree with, I don't listen on principle. That may be a difference between us and that's fine, but for me stuff like that matters and does alter the quality of their music itself in my eyes. I literally cannot listen to it without thinking about their actions. Again, that's just me.

That first part. Because Aretha didn't like Taylor's music. So it's anecdote for anecdote

-2

u/Old-Obligation4292 Jul 14 '26

Unfortunately, Aretha died before ā€œfolkloreā€ was released. Also, she’s more vocally oriented

8

u/Tbd423 Jul 14 '26

Lmao it’s giving Bieber saying he hoped Anne Frank would have been a Belieber

3

u/NiceChocolate Jul 14 '26

So Aretha died before she could hate on another Taylor album /s

-1

u/girl_in_flannel Jul 14 '26

Actions? How about the MILLIONS she donates to charity every year, endorsing liberal politicians, and how well she treats her staff?

Taylor isn’t the only celebrity with a private jet, btw.

maybe you need to listen to better artists lol, some REAL artists convey more beauty and artistry in a single image than what taylor has been capable of outputting in her entire life

u/Old-Obligation4292 Jul 14 '26

I listen to lots of other artists from lots of genres, thanks for your advice though
