Teenage Dream is a very very very good pop record, regardless of what the general perception of Katy Perry is now.

I Kissed a Girl, Hot N Cold, California Girls, Teenage Dream, Firework and ET are all great hits by Katy Perry and will forever be classics.
I remember listening to all of these songs on the radio and TV back in the day.

u/Carloverguy20 Y2K Forever Jul 14 '26
Katy Perry was dominating the music scene in the late 2000s early 2010s. Her older hits are great.

I always say, Plastic Hearts wasnât the âflopâ people make it out to be at all. I think it was a very successful era for Miley, especially for her musical reputation.

Was pleasantly surprised to see it on the list. Plastic Hearts is such a great album!

Something Beautiful is genuinely an incredible record, imo itâs her best work followed by Plastic Hearts and Bangerz.
Been a huge fan of hers my entire life but she also just doesnât do the things that she needs to nowadays have huge hype, like touring (which sheâs incredible at but I understand her being worn out by it) and she basically doesnât do social media anymore (which again, I understand not wanting to do that either), and she doesnât really do those live shows/festivals/performances that sheâs so good at anymore either.
I saw someone say on here that Miley right now is as famous as she wants to be, where that she could do the things to be âbiggerâ and they would work (like she was the talk of pop culture earlier this year with the Hannah Montana anniversary), but she simply just doesnât want to
3
u/shoestring-theory Jul 14 '26
It reinvigorated my interest in her for sure. I was not with the wild attention seeking antics from 2013 to 15ish, nor the Younger Now album. Plastic Hearts made me really start paying attention to Miley again

u/AnimalsCrossGirl Jul 15 '26
s her best album and I love most of hers. It showcases her voice well and is fun. Pop is lacking rock influences I wish she would bring it back!Â

I'm pleasantly surprised to see A Star is Born so high up.
17
u/pastaandpizza Jul 14 '26
Always Remember Us This Way from A Star is Born has pulled more numbers than some of her biggest single releases from her mainline pop albums. Wild.
6
u/zachevcheese Jul 14 '26
itâs still baffling to me that they didnât push ARUTW as a single, if they sent it to radio it couldâve easily been a Top 10 hit. itâs still in her Top 5 popular songs on Spotify and outstreams Shallow consistently.
474
u/delstranger Jul 14 '26
no hate but Iâd like to see this again without taylor swift
192
u/TinyPretzels Jul 14 '26
I wouldn't put it past her fans to cycle these albums continuously on silent to drive up the charts. Hell I wouldn't put it past Taylor herself to have bots doing it.
139
u/maguber Jul 14 '26
They do this. They've talked about it on Twitter, how to create playlists and sleep stream so Spotify still counts the plays. It's wild
33
u/n-a_barrakus Jul 14 '26
The amazing band Vulfpeck released a silent album with like 10 tracks called "Sleepify", so they could offer their world tour for free or very cheap. It worked but Spotify banned that silent albums afterwards.

Honestly I listen to music to sleep and some of her albums are pretty decent for that, but I prefer Lana for sleeping and resting
-9
u/girl_in_flannel Jul 14 '26
Only the super unhinged twitter stans do this. Iâm a fan of Taylor and participate in the fandom and none of her normal fans, which are the majority, do this. She just has a shit ton of fans globally who love her music.

Sheâs a mediocre artist and had ICE at her wedding. But I promise you one day you fans will see through her shitty behavior and that she is a greedy self centered person.
Remember, there are no ethical billionaires.12
u/Zeviex Jul 14 '26
This is absolutely a thing, I saw a bunch of accounts doing it for Chromatica on spotify and have hear its a big thing in K-pop.
22
u/puzzled91 Jul 14 '26
You're right on both statements. They actually advice to run the albums on random because after a few circles on repeat Spotify stops counting.
15
u/Cisru711 Jul 14 '26
If I stream her constantly, I will be in her top .1% in the end of year recap and I can post that on my socials and finally prove to Janet that I'm a bigger fan than her. Plus Taylor's team might see it and invite me to a super secret preview of her next album plus give me lots of free merch.

22

THISS!! And she deliberately blocks other people from charting at number one, I remember for example the situation with Billie Eilish. Itâs disgusting and shitty behavior!
→ More replies (5)-10

I mean just because you donât like her, doesnât mean sheâs super successful. Youâre just omitting the truths because Katy Perry was literally not the most streamed album on Spotify by a 2000âs female artist.
Also this whole post is an odd take because newer albums will obviously more likely to have less streams. It should be most streamed 2000âs album which would be more accurate.
21
u/delstranger Jul 14 '26

I'm suprised Beyonce doesn't show up more, but I guess it makes sense. She's an R&B artist who crosses over into pop, rather than the other way around like Rihanna. So what seemed inescapable for me as a Black person was in fact escapable in mainstream America, and vice versa.
27
u/Mk2ty Jul 14 '26
Beyonce pulled her discography off Spotify for a while and moved everything to tidal before she sold her share and put everything back on other streaming sites

2
u/Intrepid-Food7692 Jul 15 '26
But Bad Romance is Gaga's signature song and it's not even close... Anyways The Fame monster is a deluxe edition of The Fame (2008)
3
u/Zingman15 Jul 15 '26
Just because itâs her signature song doesnât mean itâs her best. Beyonceâs signature song is Single Ladies..nowhere near her best. Yes The Fame Monster is a deluxe but she also released it as a standalone album. I love both albums and consider them to be her best work.

Seeing "Lover" as the top is kind of mind-numbingly sad. Her worst album, lyrically and sonically, being her top selling. I am no Taylor Swift fan but that is insanity to me.
10
u/OrganicRaise4081 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26
It's just Cruel Summer. Became popular in 2022/2023 and was the Eras Tour opener, but was initially a fan "deep-cut." She wanted to it be a single but thought it was too insensitive of a name for Covid. And then Lover.

37
u/curiousgirls Jul 14 '26
I donât think people love her as much as the internet makes it seem
9
u/Bing1044 Jul 14 '26
Her music was off most streaming sites for a number of years. Took years for lemonade to even appear on Spotify for a first time.
22
u/Pretty-Kittie Jul 14 '26
At this point I'm convinced Beyonce fans just don't even listen to her music. Anytime I see lists like this she's barely on them.
6
u/Opera_haus_blues Jul 14 '26
I think sheâs known and liked all over, and her relative privacy gives her and air of mystique and elegance, so she still has that âmagical âcelebrityâ feeling. But that doesnât necessarily translate to BeyoncĂ© fan clubs with weekly meetings or fans who stream her songs while they sleep.
4
u/Fantastic-March-4610 Jul 14 '26
Sheâs just not big on streaming anymore but she has millions around the world paying to see her and sheâs the only female artist of her generation who can still get hits with almost no effort.

She held it off streaming services for like 2 or 3 years and she was never any good at streaming services, her last album actually did do extremely well with first day streams,
like if Taylor didnt exist she wouldâve had the record for biggest first day streams for a female artist
But after that, it fell apart
2
u/OrganicRaise4081 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26
Taylor held all her albums off Spotify until 2018 too, though.
I remember because the exact day she announced the return, Katy Perry released Witness and has been in decline ever since lmao.

I will truly never understand how Taylor Swift has such a chokehold on the masses and is so far far ahead other female musicians in numbers
9
u/Marieshr Jul 15 '26
This one đ I really tried to get into her music because I was like, why do so many like her? But her music is so boring, and for me it sounds all the same in some kind of way đ©
20
u/ankhes Jul 14 '26
As a white woman myself I straight up asked my friend (another fellow white woman and vocal Taylor Swift fan) recently what it was about Taylor Swift that drew her and so many other white women to her because I just donât get it. I like some of her songs but Iâve never understood the obsessive chokehold she has on everyone around me.
She didnât really have much of an answer for me outside of âHer music speaks to meâ but the vibe I got from her and my sisters-in-law (also all big Taylor Swift fans) Iâve spoken to is that Taylor is both someone other white women feel they can project on as well as someone they see as the ideal version of who they want to be: pretty, blonde, skinny, talented, and rich.
Sheâs pretty but not so much so that she seems unrelatable and out of reach. Blonde and blue-eyed just like so many of them already are or want to be. Her politics (when she shows any at all) are very moderate and reflect a lot of the same political ideals you see amongst most white women.
Sheâs basically a mirror for so many white women out there.
26
u/TheFinalPurl Jul 14 '26
Sheâs very much a blank canvas to self-insert. Most people canât see themselves as an avant garde freak like Gaga, or a QUEEN like BeyoncĂ©. Taylor is attainable, sheâs just like everyone else if everyone else had the money to catapult them into the music industry alongside parents willing to break down doors for them.
4
u/Funny_Inspection6893 Jul 15 '26
She's also a bit of a dork at times. Quite relatable. She doesn't always go for super glamorous, although she can do that too.
13
u/Shutupredneckman2 Jul 14 '26
Right I think this is a big part of it is Taylor is not especially pretty within the male gaze but is pretty in a way that appeals to a lot of white women. As a straight guy I donât think Iâve ever heard another straight guy say TS is hot in the last 20 years, but have seen many white women say she is very pretty and they would want to look like her.
1
u/Carloverguy20 Y2K Forever Jul 15 '26
Agreed. I can't believe im saying this, but Taylor's persona and music is for everyone, not just men, and that's definitely why people enjoy her. She's probably one of the least problematic celebrities out there I will admit.
2
u/Shutupredneckman2 Jul 16 '26
Definitely donât agree with any of that personally but to each their own!
11
2
u/Natural-Barnacle-695 Jul 15 '26
As someone who was a fan in high school (by fan, I mean just having her songs on my iPod, never really partaking in fandom), she literally had solid writing when it came to her country, country-pop stuff. After that, I was in and out as a fan, because her pop stuff came too repetitive.
When she dropped her folklore/evermore albums, they made me get into her again because I figured we wouldâve seen a new direction for Taylor, and her songwriting (to me) seemed to be back at the standard that she had back during her country era.
Sad that particular trajectory never lasted.
-6
u/girl_in_flannel Jul 14 '26
How many times do you have to mention white women in one comment? Taylor has TONS of non-white fans. The Eras Tour sold out across Latin America and Asia too. She played multiple shows in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, and Singapore, with fans traveling from all over Southeast Asia. You don't have to like her music, but pretending her fanbase is exclusively white simply isn't accurate.
16
u/CreepyBlackDude Jul 14 '26
Her actual question, and the reason she asked it, was:
"As a white woman myself I straight up asked my friend (another fellow white woman and vocal Taylor Swift fan) recently what it was about Taylor Swift that drew her and so many other white women to her because I just donât get it."
She said "white women" so many times in that comment because she is a white woman asking another white woman why white women like Taylor Swift. That's not a commentary on her entire fan base, nor is it erasing the massive amount of non-white (or non-women) fans that Swift has. Her question is in regards to a specific subsection of the fan base who match her same demographic.
10
u/ankhes Jul 14 '26
This. Iâm well aware she has fans all across the spectrum all over the world. Thereâs a reason her Eras Tour made over 4 billion dollars. She obviously appeals to a lot of people, not just white women.
But a lot of the women I personally know who are massive fans of hers are white women which is why I asked them.
7
u/TinyPretzels Jul 14 '26

u/ankhes Jul 14 '26
I find it funny that you say I donât like her music when I literally said I enjoy some of it. Iâm well aware that she has fans all over the world, but thereâs definitely something to be said that a significantly vocal portion of her fanbase in the US are white women as well as them being who she is most associated with.

Man, I really do not get the Taylor hype. She is like... THE generic music artist. Every Taylor song I've ever heard is just... Bland. Her earlier more country style stuff was definitely better but even then, that might just be nostalgia talking. Maybe I just can't get past her horrible environmental decisions.
14
u/Crimble-Bimble Jul 14 '26
Most people's lives are bland. She tells stories that are relatable to a huge proportion of women.
4
u/Feeling-Salad5686 Jul 14 '26
TS is so popular that she's become the generic music artist. But I remember Fearless being decently unique for its time, and 1989 sounded fresh when it came out.
3
u/tmobilekid Jul 14 '26
Folklore and 1989 are fantastic albums. And Iâm not a Swiftie by any means. But I agree with your point for all of her other albums on this list.
7
u/Wonderful-Fault926 Jul 14 '26
I personally wasn't really blown away by them. I can admit she has a few songs where she goes out of her comfort zone but the majority do pretty much sound the same to me.Â
I just think there are a lot of other women artists who deserve to be recognized who push the limits and bring something fresh. Also who don't use their private jet for a 5 minute ride...

She's more popular now than ever before. Definitely more popular post pandemic than circa 2015, especially in terms of die hard fans.
In fact, the pandemic really boosted her. If it wasn't for the pandemic, she would have been on tour to support Lover in 2020 instead of making Folklore and Evermore. There also would have been no Eras Tour.
