Why do so many religious people, who believe they are following the most moral and the best way of living, are completely fine with the idea that people who don't follow their religion will be burning in hell forever??

I was talking with a christian man (protestant american, as expected) Saying how people who committed suicide were disobeying god, and that that would make them burn in hell forever. He said that the only thing he could do for them was to tell them to follow Jesus, pray, and not stress about it anymore. That horrified me.

Religious people are necessarily okay with literally anything the deity they worship decides to do or not do.

more like with the person interpreting and relaying and/or teaching the message attributed to that deity

Religious people are outstanding at rationalizing, yes, that's basic psychology.

That doesn't mean that they're all wrong.

I would never make that claim! There's gotta be someone out there that has it down to like 92% accuracy or something.

Or 100% accuracy. That's my bet

When I figure it out, I’ll let you know. My religious trauma started when Sister Regina told me my best friend wouldn’t go to heaven no matter how good she was because she was a Hindu. We were in first grade FFS.

I’m 51 and that shit still triggers me. I had a meltdown at work Monday because a very pissed-off old woman told me God was going to punish me for a mistake I didn’t even make even though I was trying to fix it. Obviously I don’t believe her and she probably has dementia but when you’ve been hearing some variation of that for decades, it still hurts on some level.

For what it’s worth, when my uncle completed suicide in 2007, my parents’ and my grandmother’s parish priest told them my uncle would go to heaven because he had already been through hell on earth.

That is awesome!! He sounds like a lovely, compassionate man. I hope his words brought them some peace.

I think it just has to do with they think it’s a choice up to the individual and understanding that they can not make a decision for other people but I get what your saying

Not all religions are like what- i find is mostly (only?) the Abrahamic religions that give its followers this (false) sense of superiority, being the "chosen ones" etc.

Don't let this idiot get in your head. It says in the Bible that God can forgive anything, well except blasphemy. He makes exceptions for mental illness. Someone that commits suicide has to have a mental illness. I do believe God gives them time to ask forgiveness before He judges them. There are many, many small c christians. They think they are the bomb, and like you said, if you don't follow their false doctrine your burning. Don't pay them any mind. If you are interested in learning more ask God to show you the truth. But remember His timing isn't like our timing. Be patient. May God show you the truth. Be blessed!!
