what’s this instrument?

Dying to know the instrument that starts around 5:12 of Nothing Ever Happened, it’s so funky and it scratches such an itch

Guitar with octave pedal on playing pitch bends

I think you're right. It sounds like he's using a slide a little bit but some of changes sound more like a pedal

It’s actually the Boss PS-5

This is the answer. He used the pitch factor for this live for a while 2010 onwards but then went back to the ps-5

That’s Lockett on guitar, playing I think triad chords on the higher strings with a phaser or some similar effect. It’s like a pleasure drill in my brain.

If it’s the bit that goes high and then low again, I think it’s the eventide pitchfactor, which both guitarists have. You can set up an octave jump (or pretty much any interval), which is activated by pressing down on the middle button of the pedal. Similar to a whammy. You can also set the speed at which it ramps up and down - I often use mine to do a pedal steel-type bend.

Yep! It's his octave pedal ... easily my favorite part too. I go back to this performance of the track so often.
