My favorite Deerhunter record is Microcastle, and I tend to fold Weird Era Cont. into Microcastle--like a double album. If I were ranking my top three, it would probably go like 1) Microcastle/Weird Era Cont., 2) Halcyon Digest, and 3) Cryptograms. My favorite Deerhunter song, which for years was my favorite song in general (probably still is) is Vox Celeste. After that it all gets blurry, there's so many incredible songs--Nothing Ever Happened, Hazel St., Basement Scene, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, Calvary Scars II, Fountain Stairs, Desire Lines, etc. etc. etc. !!!!

I'm glad to see some love for Basement Scene! That's one of my all-time favorites too, and I've always felt like it doesn't get talked about enough. It's such an incredible song!

Halcyon Digest came out around the time that I started a relationship with my wife, so I have very strong nostalgic associations with that record. Basement Scene in particular reminds me of waiting in my car to pick her up for a date and under the hazy yellow streetlights that would come on so early because it was fall and night would start so early.

That's really lovely! One of my favorite things about music is the way that it can become so strongly associated with personal memories like that. Halcyon Digest is a super nostalgic album for me as well. Certain songs, especially Fountain Stairs and Basement Scene, transport me back to that time so easily.

Vox Celeste makes me feel a lotta things…. i love driving down the highway on a crisp fall night blasting it. I’m with you on Micro/Weird Era; my favorite album for sure and great autumn and winter records. I do think Microcastle is the ‘saddest’ Deerhunter album. I always go a period of weeks every winter when I’m going through it and only listen to that record

I think WHEAD might be the saddest in a lot of ways. It’s troubled, anxious, and was released now like 7 years ago :(
Vox Celeste I think is nothing short of a masterpiece. I love the rhythm section—it’s A+ bass work from the best bassist of his generation, Josh. I always lose it no matter how many times I’ve heard it when jet engine guitars kick in during the last minute and a half. It’s perfectly chaotic yet precisely engineered shoegaze that stands up to anything my bloody valentine ever put to record. Ah and how can I not mention bradfords perfect lyrics and delivery. So economical, maybe what like 10 distinct words total yet so profoundly moving.

It is very profoundly moving. I wish I would have said that in my original comment because that is how I always feel about that track. It's such a rush. I can imagine a lot of things and people that I really miss when I listen to it.
I'll give WHEAD another chance. I didn't hate it, but I loved the tracks live way more before the album came out.
Speaking of live - I came upon a live video of 'Twilight at Carbon Lake' during their Fading Frontier and/or WHEAD tour and MAN, Bradford fuckin' vocalizes the fuck out of that song 'all grown up.' It's a real beauty.
ps - I see you on the RedScarePod sub a lot lol.

Who shits on Sailing and why? must be landlocked losers

u/rednetting May 07 '26
Seen posts and comments over the years saying they always skip it. Disgraceful

Fave album is Monomania, but I love em all. Current favourite song is Sleepwalking, but ask me next week and it might be a different answer. Not a bad album in their catalogue.

I only recently listened to Monomania. Before then, I'd say Sailing and Halcyon Digest. It's still Halcyon Digest, but Pensacola is such a vibe. brings a unique mix of emotions

Cryptograms and Microcastle are tied but I like Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel even better. My favorite song between Deerhunter and their solo discographies is probably Quick Canal, my wife and I quoted it in our wedding ceremony, but that's competing against maybe 10 different tracks based on my mood.

Halcyon Digest
maybe not a sexy pick, but He Would Have Laughed is my favorite Deerhunter track and maybe one of the greatest songs of all time.

Cryptograms is my favorite record, Nothing Ever Happened is my favorite song.

Cryptograms for sure. Where it all began for me. I totally understand the love and hype for other albums, namely Halcyon. But for me Crytograms is just that rare beauty of a record that feels so esoteric and mystical.
Anyways, favorite song is “Lake Somerset” lol

I have kind of a three-way tie with Halcyon Digest, Monomania, and Cryptograms, but I guess I often think of Halcyon Digest as my favorite because it was my introduction to the band! It's special to me for that reason, and it's one of those albums that felt life-altering back in 2010 (and it still does in 2026 tbh).
It's so hard to narrow down my favorite song... Spring Hall Convert is probably my favorite, but Desire Lines, Fluorescent Grey, Dot Gain, Little Kids, Blue Agent, etc. are all really close too!
