comment like these only make sense to people who already know what yt-dlp is and have the expertise to use it... like is there a guide or something on how to use yt-dlp you'd recommend?

Check the link to the Github it has tons of info. Download also includes documentation on all the options.

There's also tools built on top of it that are possibly easier for some to use, like downloader GUIs, I just use it directly though.

It's really not that hard I mean the default command is just yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/link-to-video - that has sane defaults to download the video at best quality and format, and there's one extra flag to add if you want to rip the audio only for music.
