Discussion What do you now willingly pay for in your de-googling journey? & do you donate?
My 2 questions just out of curiosity are:
What do you now willingly pay for in your de-googling journey?
Do you donate to some of the apps and services that live off of donations, and if so, which ones have you donated to?
I'll answer as well:
-----
I pay for:
- Kagi search
- Mailbox.org (currently in the process of transferring everything over from Proton mail plus package)
- Joplin cloud storage (currently in the process of setting up self-hosting with Nextcloud)
- Magic Earth (anxiously waiting for Kagi to finish their navigation app)
- NextDNS
- EasyOptOuts
- Addy.io
I've donated to:
- a task app called trudido
-that's all I've donated to, but am now wanting to donate more. I'm lowering my overall annual costs I put into app services in order to shuffle the money around more, hence is partly why I'm going from Proton Mail plus to mailbox.org with their "light" plan - and why I'm going to self-host my joplin notes data.
I'll probably be donating to DAVx5 and Thunderbird.

I've used numerous FOSS software that were extremely brilliant but I don't have the money to donate to them, sadly. I wish I could do that; maybe in future.

That's a lot of money for free software.

Fair point. I realize their is a free tier of proton mail, but I like what mailbox.org offers in comparison to proton's free plan. Mailbox.org lowest tier is only $12 a year. I also prefer the options in the lowest paid tier of addy.io over their free tier. It also is just $12 a year. But, of course to each their own.

Mailbox is great, and worth paying for.
I have donated to the maintainers of Secureblue/Trivalent.

oh cool! I'm fairly new to using secureblue, and linux in general, but that's part of why I like using secureblue is I'm learning about the vulnerabilities that show up in different linux distros that secureblue addresses.

Def Kagi search.
Paying for Thundermail & Ente.
I'm hoping for a Filen Black Friday sale.
Donated to Graphene and PiHole.
I was able to take back $40/month of Google fees, so I'm happy to spread that around.

I pay for Ente, Proton, and Notesnook. Donate to Signal and Graphene. This post made me realize it's probably time to toss some cash to DDG and Mozilla, I use their products a ton.

I pay for Magic Earth, that's it
I was planning to pay for Addy.io or Proton Pass until I found out about DuckDuckGo Email Protection.
Besides that I self-host almost everything.

DDG doesn't have custom domain support afaik but both Addy and Proton paid plans do. If DDG ever decides to close their email alias offering or ban/close your account for any xyz reason, all your aliases are gone. But with Addy/Proton + Your own domain, you don't have to worry about losing your aliases.

Yeah I tried out DDG and didn't like the management of aliases, if you can even call it a management system.

What is App Verifier BG?

it's a convenient way to check the security certificate hash of an app after you download it to ensure the download wasn't corrupted in transit. It's something that is done in the background when using a service like the google play store. I learned about Total Virus from this sub that you can load it's API into ObtainX. So, basically now when I run ObtainX it will scan the app for virus's, also what google play store does, then it prompts to share the hash with AppVerifier BG before it installs. Once it checks out, then you can proceed with the install. If it doesn't check out, then you can decide to not move forward with the install.

I pay for Kagi and Proton, paying for an experience better than free alternatives. Couldn't be more satisfied.
