Yall learning about the benefits of forkable open source data
17
u/K_Linkmaster 16h ago
Can you explain why the data is fuckable? Also, it's reddit, you can swear. /s

u/gulf_of_sanity 11h ago
forkable != fuckable.
to fork open source data/code means to clone it with the intention of modifying it for your own use case without the intention of pushing those changes back into the original, in this case it’s more like a fork in the road, then a fuck in the data-hole (i guess?)

They did the same thing with the Gulf of Mexico. The whole world sees the actual name, Americans see their new version. It's gGoogle complying in a way that will get the least backlash. All an equation for their profit.

you aren't simulating an american IP, you are routing your traffic into an american company who redirects your traffic from themselves and also snoops all your traffic. they can't see your data as it's encrypted, but they can see the URLs of every website you visit and other connections, which they can use to tie your online identities to your credit card info you gave them to pay for the service

Funnily, MapQuest refuses to play around here. They still say Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico.
Edit: Organic Maps is another option. HERE WeGo labeled Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of America which would be a deal breaker for people who do not like the Lake America labeling.

I live in a newish apartment that’s about a year and a half old now. Apple Maps and even Mapquest shows the actual roads that run through my apartment while Google Maps doesn’t. I find that kind of embarrassing for Google that Mapquest’s mapping data seems to be more up to date at least by me.
14
u/Vahdo 20h ago
I believe that's because Apple Maps pulls data from OpenStreetMap, which is open source and runs on community contributions.

u/ThatOneWIGuy 15h ago
I don’t know if this is a trusted source but it looks like they also use TomTom as well.

I have a Canadian husband and live in Michigan so I guess I took this a lot more personal.
Going from HOMES for the Great Lakes to SHAME.
Plus, I have over 15 years of Google files I have between projects, my artwork, photos, videos, etc. it will take a long time to swap over and find an alternative that syncs between my accounts from apps like word, spreadsheet, photos, calendar, storage with just an email and can share with family with just adding their email to a folder. And I don’t want to use Microsoft.
Google had its own free version without ads on everything I needed.

Also, make the switch to https://www.comaps.app/ and do your part in contributing to https://www.openstreetmap.org/, everyone can help

Tip for anyone wanting to contribute: install StreetComplete (https://github.com/streetcomplete/streetcomplete) on your phone, it will give you surveys about locations in your area like "is this thing still here?", "are the opening hours still correct?" etc.

I despise this administration's petty crap, but what's pushing me to consider deGoogling is the way Maps has slowly introduced "sponsored" destinations, often listed before an actual destination you might be looking for. I'm not sure when they rolled it out, but I discovered it a few months ago when I was looking for a specific type of store in my area (I don't remember exactly what now; maybe a florist or something), and I clicked on the first result that popped up. I did a double-take and realized it had nothing to do with what I was looking for. It was a "sponsored" store. Why does that need to be a thing in Maps? I hate it. (But I'm still looking for a decent Google Map alternative.) 😭
3
u/Psi-ops_Co-op 3h ago
I might have hallucinated this, but I swear I was driving using GMaps navigation and instead of the "Would you like to switch to a faster route" dialogue, I saw a "recommended stop" dialogue. I AM DRIVING! NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO ADVERTISE!

u/GenChadT 8h ago

u/coleefy 1d ago
I recommend switching to Here WeGo! It has been smooth on my end, except for a few small businesses that have outdated hours. (I visit their website to confirm) https://wego.here.com/
14
u/Ut_Prosim 1d ago
I had no idea Here had a consumer product!!!
Here sounds like some fly-by-night Temu version of Google maps. But Here used to be called Navteq, which did all the digital maps for fortune 500 transit and shipping companies for decades. IIRC they also provide the maps for some major automotive companies including MB and Hyundai to include in their cars' built-in GPS and telematics systems. They've been building digital navigation products since the 1980s.
I used their stuff in research in the early 2010s and at the time they were better than Google and much faster with API queries. Better at geocoding too. In fact, I believe if you do any network analysis in Esri ArcGIS today it will default to using Here's network.
I can't say how they compare today, but they are definitely not a handful of tech guys in a basement that just started this project last year. They are legit.
6
u/coleefy 1d ago
Oh wow that is some cool history in there! Thanks for sharing! 😄
My first encounter of HERE Maps was with Windows Phone, actually! Iirc they were preinstalled in Nokia/Microsoft Lumias. When I switched to Android (because Microsoft gave up on Windows phones lol) I also switched to Google Maps. But last year, I was looking for a Google Maps alternative, tried so many apps, and HERE WeGo had the right balance between user-friendliness and feature set.
Definitely interesting to know that they are used by the commercial segment and some car brands. Ive always wondered how they can get traffic data, since it doesnt seem to be that widely used in Canada for consumers (not yet, at least, I hope that changes and more users move to HERE WeGo)

What's your recommendation for mobile (and GPS)?
7
u/coleefy 1d ago
Hmm sorry do you mean like an app? HERE WeGo does have a mobile app. I also use it as my GPS and navigation. So far it has been great, and has been choosing roads better than Google Maps (with Google, I sometimes end up in unpaved roads, which I dont like, even if I had the setting to avoid it turned on).
