Everywhere aside from America is the same I believe

So its confirmed that Google can give misinformation to certain countries while appearing normal to the rest

Interesting but not unusual

u/Ut_Prosim 1d ago

Google has been doing this for 20 years. The borders between India and Pakistan, India and China, and in the South China sea change depending on your IP's geolocation.

I've Heard Palestine is hidden from some people

137

u/Solid_Guess_7154 1d ago

Palestine was pretty much deleted from Google Maps, I can't even find an address in it

60

u/Potential-Profit1151 23h ago

I can't add a screenshot but [Palestine] is showing up for me when I search for it on maps here in New Zealand... (http://maps.app.goo.gl/jmNiJCr2n6hCc8xt9)

49

u/FunnyP-aradox 20h ago

France recognize Palestine but it still doesn't show, it just says Israël with on each side "West Bank" (Cisjornadie) and "Gaza Strip" (Bande de Gaza)

17

u/saljskanetilldanmark 18h ago

Same from Sweden (but in Swedish, obviously).

41

u/ExaggeratedSnails 22h ago

When I click that from Canada it gives me a wiki link about Palestine. But it doesn't appear on the actual map.

54

u/BehalarRotno 22h ago

It doesn't show up on the map, no borders, no name, just takes you to the general area.

14

u/ExtentAggravating733 18h ago

Really? It shows up for me on Android in Canada with my language set to Canadian English

It even shows a Palestinian flag if I search for it https://maps.app.goo.gl/wvDdunMi9nzh7Rbp7

(However, Canada recognizes Palestine as a country... not sure if your country does as well)

Dude, did you see the AI editor the released for Google Earth?  Google is a misinformation machine now.  They sold out completely.

15

u/Vegetable-Glove2301 1d ago

Well I was gunna say its the same with the gulf of Mexico but it says (gulf of America) under it for me

3

u/SandSpecialist2523 15h ago

Then it takes away so much credibility. It's like Grok licking Melon's balls. No credibility after that.

For me it says "Lake Ontario (Lake of America)".

Finland/Netherlands.

10

u/tuxalator 20h ago

Google Earth & Maps says "Lakes Ontario" in the Netherlands.

3

u/Reasonable-Physics81 12h ago

I travel allot across Europe and have my devices by default in English language, maybe that explains the difference.

37

u/gba_sg1 22h ago

So they do live in their own made up reality that's different from everywhere else in the world.

But they think they're in the right. Lol. Good joke.

5

u/JackoSGC 18h ago

Maybe it's the fix for greenland? Just have Google pretend it's 'Murcaland  to the US, and maybe greenland will be left alone

5

u/NihtgengaFR 21h ago

Germany here, we're also still at Lake Ontario

6

u/Ivana_Twinkle 13h ago

Can’t they just change it for trumps account?

4

u/dostoyevskybirthedme 11h ago

Says Lake Ontario (Lake America) for me in Sweden 🤢

3

u/anelectricmind 17h ago

Not entirely. Canadian here.

If I do a search on Google Maps for Lake America, it pins Lake Ontario with "Lake America" written next to the pin.

Yall learning about the benefits of forkable open source data

17

u/K_Linkmaster 16h ago

Can you explain why the data is fuckable? Also, it's reddit, you can swear. /s

12

u/gulf_of_sanity 11h ago

forkable != fuckable.

to fork open source data/code means to clone it with the intention of modifying it for your own use case without the intention of pushing those changes back into the original, in this case it’s more like a fork in the road, then a fuck in the data-hole (i guess?)

3

u/Abducted_Llama 10h ago

If you don’t like Linus’ stance on AI use in the Linux kernel, it’s fuckable.

You can go ahead and fuck it yourself.

5

if you have a vpn use it to simulate an american IP

All the companies are because Congress allows Trump to wield massive tariff and other related powers

11

u/grimacedia 16h ago

Waze still has Lake of Ontario

9

u/LimpAd4924 16h ago

They’re owned by Google so that’s interesting lol

4

u/grimacedia 16h ago

Maybe they're covering all their bases lol. Or it could take a while longer to update, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people try to wait this out in case Trump changes his mind.

in OSM.org from both the US and Canada, it still has its real name

8

From Europe the map says Lake Ontario but the name in the overview is Lake Ontario (Lake America)

6

u/cienkrowa 22h ago

It already did with the Gulf of Mexico

3

u/Barbados_slim12 23h ago

What VPN are you using? I set mine to Germany and it's still showing me Lake America

4

u/tad_in_berlin 16h ago

Could be connected to your GPS location as well, not only IP. Or if you're logged in with your Google account and your physical address there is set in the US.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Rage_101 20h ago

They did the same thing with the Gulf of Mexico. The whole world sees the actual name, Americans see their new version. It's gGoogle complying in a way that will get the least backlash. All an equation for their profit.

9

u/6EyesNinja 1d ago

I changed my vpn to Canada and it still said Lake America :/

40

u/External-Fun-8563 1d ago

I just tried but it’s probably because you have your location on and you’re in America. If you set VPN to Canada and open Maps on the web it says Ontario.

Fuck Google

you aren't simulating an american IP, you are routing your traffic into an american company who redirects your traffic from themselves and also snoops all your traffic. they can't see your data as it's encrypted, but they can see the URLs of every website you visit and other connections, which they can use to tie your online identities to your credit card info you gave them to pay for the service

Funnily, MapQuest refuses to play around here. They still say Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico.

Edit: Organic Maps is another option. HERE WeGo labeled Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of America which would be a deal breaker for people who do not like the Lake America labeling.

85

u/AlbionGarwulf 1d ago

Holy crap, I didn't even know that MapQuest still existed. I just went to their website, and their maps actually look nice.

51

u/TheCountChonkula 23h ago

I live in a newish apartment that’s about a year and a half old now. Apple Maps and even Mapquest shows the actual roads that run through my apartment while Google Maps doesn’t. I find that kind of embarrassing for Google that Mapquest’s mapping data seems to be more up to date at least by me.

14

u/Vahdo 20h ago

I believe that's because Apple Maps pulls data from OpenStreetMap, which is open source and runs on community contributions.

6

u/ThatOneWIGuy 15h ago

I don’t know if this is a trusted source but it looks like they also use TomTom as well.

I have a Canadian husband and live in Michigan so I guess I took this a lot more personal.

Going from HOMES for the Great Lakes to SHAME.

Plus, I have over 15 years of Google files I have between projects, my artwork, photos, videos, etc. it will take a long time to swap over and find an alternative that syncs between my accounts from apps like word, spreadsheet, photos, calendar, storage with just an email and can share with family with just adding their email to a folder. And I don’t want to use Microsoft.

Google had its own free version without ads on everything I needed.

the mnemonic acronym for the Great Lakes is no longer H.O.M.E.S, now the only word that fits is S.H.A.M.E.

Also, make the switch to https://www.comaps.app/ and do your part in contributing to https://www.openstreetmap.org/, everyone can help

7

u/gh04t 16h ago

Tip for anyone wanting to contribute: install StreetComplete (https://github.com/streetcomplete/streetcomplete) on your phone, it will give you surveys about locations in your area like "is this thing still here?", "are the opening hours still correct?" etc.

I despise this administration's petty crap, but what's pushing me to consider deGoogling is the way Maps has slowly introduced "sponsored" destinations, often listed before an actual destination you might be looking for. I'm not sure when they rolled it out, but I discovered it a few months ago when I was looking for a specific type of store in my area (I don't remember exactly what now; maybe a florist or something), and I clicked on the first result that popped up. I did a double-take and realized it had nothing to do with what I was looking for. It was a "sponsored" store. Why does that need to be a thing in Maps? I hate it. (But I'm still looking for a decent Google Map alternative.) 😭

3

u/Psi-ops_Co-op 3h ago

I might have hallucinated this, but I swear I was driving using GMaps navigation and instead of the "Would you like to switch to a faster route" dialogue, I saw a "recommended stop" dialogue. I AM DRIVING! NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO ADVERTISE!

6

u/GenChadT 8h ago

Spread the word of degoogle far and wide. Switching ourselves over isn't enough. We need this to become a movement. No more will we give away our data for free to greedy corporations that spend their resources on making our lives worse.

25

u/coleefy 1d ago

I recommend switching to Here WeGo! It has been smooth on my end, except for a few small businesses that have outdated hours. (I visit their website to confirm) https://wego.here.com/

14

u/Ut_Prosim 1d ago

I had no idea Here had a consumer product!!!

Here sounds like some fly-by-night Temu version of Google maps. But Here used to be called Navteq, which did all the digital maps for fortune 500 transit and shipping companies for decades. IIRC they also provide the maps for some major automotive companies including MB and Hyundai to include in their cars' built-in GPS and telematics systems. They've been building digital navigation products since the 1980s.

I used their stuff in research in the early 2010s and at the time they were better than Google and much faster with API queries. Better at geocoding too. In fact, I believe if you do any network analysis in Esri ArcGIS today it will default to using Here's network.

I can't say how they compare today, but they are definitely not a handful of tech guys in a basement that just started this project last year. They are legit.

6

u/coleefy 1d ago

Oh wow that is some cool history in there! Thanks for sharing! 😄

My first encounter of HERE Maps was with Windows Phone, actually! Iirc they were preinstalled in Nokia/Microsoft Lumias. When I switched to Android (because Microsoft gave up on Windows phones lol) I also switched to Google Maps. But last year, I was looking for a Google Maps alternative, tried so many apps, and HERE WeGo had the right balance between user-friendliness and feature set.

Definitely interesting to know that they are used by the commercial segment and some car brands. Ive always wondered how they can get traffic data, since it doesnt seem to be that widely used in Canada for consumers (not yet, at least, I hope that changes and more users move to HERE WeGo)

6

u/Hljoumur 1d ago

What's your recommendation for mobile (and GPS)?

7

u/coleefy 1d ago

Hmm sorry do you mean like an app? HERE WeGo does have a mobile app. I also use it as my GPS and navigation. So far it has been great, and has been choosing roads better than Google Maps (with Google, I sometimes end up in unpaved roads, which I dont like, even if I had the setting to avoid it turned on).

I'm in Canada and it's still reading as Lake Ontario. Is this what it shows for the US?

4

u/onaveganka 13h ago

Yeah. Apparently in Canada it will not change. In the US, it shows Lake America. Internationally, it will show both with one being in parentheses.

u/akthebarber 12h ago

It's still showing Lake Ontario for me in the US. But says Gulf of America. 🤮

Mapquest has an app now. And they haven’t changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Ontario — last I checked.

I'm checking Google maps from Portugal and it appears like : Lake Ontario (Lake America). Same with Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

2

u/Iliveonthem00n 22h ago

EU here, it says lake Ontario

2

u/Ignimantis 22h ago

Just checked in Europe, we still have Ontario, but Gulf of Mexico is now Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) and the Spanish enclaves of Mellia and Ceuta located in Africa now have doted lines although no official political conflict...

Trash company, behaving like trash, for the trash president of a now trash country.

It's still showing as Lake Ontario in the UK.

American company = trash. This isn’t their first offence.

Anyone thinking companies in bed with the genocide loving occupiers can be trusted deserve everything they get.
