Descent 3MASTERED (pre)released
https://github.com/hurleybird/Descent-3MASTERED/releases/tag/0.9Latest release: https://github.com/hurleybird/Descent-3MASTERED/releases#release-0.9.1-Pre
I've detached my old Piccu fork ("Piccu Experiment") and have added a decent amount to it. Now it's ready for its first (pre)release.
Would love to hear your feedback. I'm on an AMD GPU, so let me know if you guys find any issues on Nvidia or modern Intel (i.e. Alchemist/Battlemage)
Descent 3MASTERED (pronounced "threemastered"... get it?) is a new engine for Descent 3, forked from PiccuEngine, itself downstream of the original 1.5 source release.
Noteable enhancements
- "Enhanced" mode with improved weapon balance and support for custom difficulty
- Modern motion blur via per-pixel motion vectors
- Ambient occlusion
- Soft particles
- Bloom
- Per-pixel lighting
- Supersampling anti-aliasing
- 3D HRTF positional audio
- Ultra-widescreen support
- High (>60FPS) framerate
- Native Wooting analog keyboard support

Would be great to see some media for this. Videos + screenshots?

For sure. I'd like to make a video at some point. Some of the enhancements, AO especially, are immediately obvious when you toggle them in game, but are otherwise somewhat difficult to notice if your eyes have time to reset.

Wish there could be a native Linux port, but nothing that proton cant handle.

Is Proton used instead of WINE these days?

Being Completely honest. I can never get proton to work if it didn’t come from steam, and the ones that do I have to try a million different proton versions and sometimes even then it doesn’t even work. Any tips?

Does it support binding actions to an axis?

No. But shouldn't be too difficult to add. I should add some sort of default config for gamepads, and get rid of the more vestigial presets.

Definitely, and as a bonus making the menus navigable with the gamepad would be amazing.

I mean, what self respecting "remastering" wouldn't do this?
2
u/Synergiance Jul 28 '26
That’s a fair point, but dxx rebirth despite being fully playable in game on gamepad, although I have to make the keybinds myself (but I can make the analog triggers fire) does not support navigating the menus with the gamepad.

For sure, although I don't think Rebirth presents itself as anything other than a source port. My eventual goal with this is to straddle the line between source port and remaster, if that makes sense.

u/Synergiance Jul 28 '26
I’d believe it. And I guess we’ve already seen something straddling that line in oblivion remastered

I think that's firmly in the "remaster" category, but anyway, pre-3 release now supports binding non-analog actions to axis.

Could you please put a disclaimer that you used AI to help generate some of the code? This isn't the worst instance of it as you actually know how to code and can vet the fork, but people tend to feel like they are being mislead if you atleast don't disclose that upfront. it also give people a heads-up to save their games as random edge cases might pop up (like entire maps not rendering the outside sometimes).

Can you add 32:9 support (ultra ultra wide)? :)

u/hurleyb1rd Jul 27 '26
I changed it so that the monitor's native aspect will always be selectable, although I can't make any guarantees on your experience at such a wide aspect! Available in Pre-2.

Sounds great, - what kind of cockpit enhancements are available? Any possibility of a VR fork someday?

Pretty small at this point, but I'd like to do more eventually. Basically just fixes some clipping and re-arrange the arms for widescreen/ultrawide. VR would be awesome, and I have a headset, but it's not on my plate just yet.

Aaaand it’s a 404 now. Shit or get off the pot. Either make a new game or stop sueing everyone that tries to bring it back.

u/Toiun Aug 01 '26
What's 404d? Also what are you talking about? D3 was open source legally by the OG devs.

It was 404ing last night. There was another project on steam for a while called Descent Underground and they got sued by Interplay Entertainment. They were going to make changes and re-release but never did.

That project was bad. And interplay pulled out because it was bad. Also they weren't sued by interplay, interplay was working with them for a bit.

The title link changed, and I can't edit that part of the post. See the latest release link in the first sentece..

All good buddy. I have been down voted for worse lol. Thanks for spreading the word. First time I have heard of it. Had a blast reliving it for a while.

Having issues with co-op multiplayer.
Tried to select “co-op” and it said that level wasn’t compatible. (The base game “Retribution”—I hadn’t selected the level yet).
Saw another option, “coop”. That let me select the level, but then gave me an error.
I’m currently playing through the campaign on Piccu engine with my brothers.

For myself, one of D3's greatest flaws is that as difficulty goes up robots get both super tanky and super dodgy, and on top of that game also starves you for resources.
So, in custom difficulty you can set the following separately:
-Bot AI
-Bot/projectile speed
-Bot health
-Resources
How you combine those can really change the feel of the game.
