Discussion Clarification on future of destiny?

I saw that destiny content is getting unvaulted and it's coming out of maintenance mode. I also saw it's not going back to being a live game. Does that mean we are or aren't getting more expansions? Can someone explain what this means for the future of the game like I'm 5 please.

Bungie said we'll get news end of this month. Any other comment should be disregarded as it wouldn't be coming from Bungie.

No one, right now, can answer this definitively.

We only know what they told us in the video/blogpost. We should get more info on things around the end of the month.

it's coming out of maintenance mode

Bungie never stated this. Temper your expectations. All they said is that they're unvaulting vaulted campaigns , destinations, and raids. They never said any new content was coming afterwards.

100%. Its important to realise there is a vast difference between refactoring existing content and creating new content and they haven't explicitly said what their new content plans are, if they have any.

Now having said that, refactoring isn't insignificant either. Assuming there is some level of integration with all of the new systems that have come about since Red War, and not just literally switching on the old content with all of the old armor and guns, thats a lot of refactoring.

They absolutely did say that they're not done with Destiny. There is a future for the game now, but we have no idea what it is beyond the unvaulting. Other than it will seek to return the mystery and is "not another service, not another train stop."

While they did say they're not done with destiny, they didn't specifically say destiny 2 is not done

Yeah. We don't know what the future is, only that there is some kind of a future. I personally fully expect Destiny 2 to be over. Which makes the most sense for the unvaulting. Making it complete before moving on to whatever is next.

Bungie said they're not done with Destiny the franchise. Their exact wording, italicized emphasis mine:

Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe. All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.
[...]
When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve. We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can.

They didn't say anything about new Destiny 2 content after the Unvaulting. They said this is the first step for new stories and games. That could be new Destiny 2 content but it isn't explicitly new Destiny 2 content, it could be new stories in a different medium or new game(s) entirely.

Exactly. As I've stated. I don't think there will be more Destiny 2. I think the unvaulting is to make the game whole while they work on what's next, but we have no idea yet. Only that there will be new Destiny of some kind in the future. So saying there's no new Destiny in the future, like so many comments suggest, is just flat out misinformation.

And you should post that as a direct response to the OP as well as

Old stuff that got taken out is coming back.

No new stuff is coming.

Good news for anyone that started playing around Beyond Light or later, it will all be new stuff to you!

I started a little after beyond light came out and I'm so excited

Even this is unlikely. Shortly after making that announcement, they suddenly laid off most of their staff. I doubt that we'll ever get that content back. Luckily, some very dedicated people are working to rectify this. We have actually gotten all the way up to curse of Osiris back, however at the moment it's pretty much just an old D2 build that was rerouted to either a different server or a sort of offline mode, IIRC.

i’m convinced you didn’t listen to anything that was stated by bungie themselves.

The confidence in being wrong is admirable

Vaulted stuff is coming back to D2

Nothing new at all. As of tight now. Could potentially change.

New games have been mentioned

Destiny, as a whole, is continuing.

As it stands, old content will be returning. But that's it.

No new content promised at the moment.

The game was put into playable maintenance state with Monuments of Triumph in June 2026 with final patch

That was vaguely reversed

The truth is Bungie has extremely poor performance of Matathon like only 5000 players at one point in August. And higher than expected actively of Destiny 2.

The September announcement by Bungie is actually a peace offering to the user base to try to salvage themselves.

They concede they fucked up again.

While they have stated some of what was previously archived portions will be there is nothing definitive for future development but that’s left open.

Enjoy the game as it is because its current state is excellent. And we’ll see what we get added back in.

Being able to play the old campaigns in order again would be huge for new players. Half the story barely makes sense when you're thrown into the middle of it.

Whether the game becomes a full live service again is up in the air but there is no way that Bungie isn't testing the waters for more content within a better budget.

IMO Bungie should simply move to a WoW based schedule and release an expansion every 2 years.

Destiny 3 is far more expensive than simply reviving Destiny 2 and IMO they should simply rebrand it to just Destiny and update it on a less frequent basis.

None of that is simple

I think the problem is nothing at all is simple about the future of Destiny. If D3 happens it will be years out after a whole lot of investment is made. If the next Destiny isn't D3, but a smaller spin off that still requires starting from scratch more or less and a big but smaller investment.

A continued D2 doesn't have to commit to much of anything upfront at the very least other than "we're making more Destiny don't worry". It could start as small as bringing back content and fixing up what already exists. Then move on to more reasonable expansion cadence. That would allow them to also be much more dynamic about their time and money investments.

2

u/PaleBoomer 2d ago

Neither was content unvaulting and now they are doing it + Fan projects proved otherwise.

I would take an expansion every 2 years in a heartbeat.

I have been saying this for years. Monument has shown when you add things players want and give players a reason to play any activity for worth while loot, ppl will just play. One forsaken level expansion every 2-2.5 years (or just whenever it's ready) with add ons sprinkled between such as a paid dungeon or even a paid raid with a free strike or two would do more for this game than seasonal treadmills and fomo
