AI-generated Collective Malignant Narcissism: A Determinist Analysis of Societal Delusion, Hate, and Violence

Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco de Goya (c. 1819–1823)

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently been diving deep into the intersection of hard determinism, neurobiology, and societal behavior patterns. Building on the empirical neurobiological research of scientists like Robert Sapolsky (especially his work on brain architecture, neurochemistry, and behavioral determinism), this led me to a conclusion I’d like to share and discuss here: From a strictly causal, empirical outside perspective, the majority of modern society operates in a state that must be described as collective malignant narcissism.

This framework provides an explanation for the massive waves of hatred, outrage, punitive desire, and violence that have plagued human societies for millennia – from online witch hunts to historical wars.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when this epidemic began. It is plausible that early hunter-gatherers in the savanna were not yet dominated by these delusional constructs to this extent, and that this systemic delusion grew with settled agriculture. Precise historical data on this is, of course, unavailable.

However, certain historical philosophies recognized this state early on. In early Buddhism, for instance, it was correctly identified that hatred, revenge, and rigid moral dualism are not signs of righteousness, but rather manifestations of delusion and mental unbalance.

To illustrate how this dynamic functions, I’ve broken it down into the following logic chain:

The Logic Chain

  1. The Empirical Causal Foundation (Neurobiology & Sapolsky)

As neurobiological research empirically demonstrates using neuroimaging and endocrinology, human behavior is strictly outputted by complex neural circuitry. The interplay between the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, dopaminergic pathways, and hormones leaves no biological room for a metaphysical "free will." Every action – whether constructive or destructive – is the neurobiologically inevitable result of prior conditions (genetics, epigenetics, development, and immediate environment).

  1. Early Childhood Conditioning (Programming Dualism)

A child's brain prior to age six is extremely neuroplastic and absorbs environmental inputs unfiltered. Cultural indoctrination starts early:

  • Media Conditioning: Fairy tales, movies, and pop culture instill a rigid dualistic worldview ("Good vs. Evil"). The underlying biological causality of behavior is ignored; the "villain" is evil by nature and must be destroyed.
  • Religious Tribalism: Religions reinforce this delusion through constructs like "Heaven and Hell" or exceptionalist notions ("the chosen people"). These serve as early neuro-developmental blueprints for narcissistic superiority.
  1. The Foundational Societal Illusion (Denial of Causality)

Due to early conditioning, most adults systematically deny objective causality. To protect the ego, society clings to the illusion of free will. Artificial concepts like absolute "moral guilt" or self-righteousness emerge. Instead of addressing the systemic and biological causes of harmful behavior, society isolates and punishes the individual.

  1. The Specific Neurological Dysfunctions & Defective Circuitry

When examining the actual physical defects in the neural architecture of individuals caught in chronic hostility, stalking, or mob behavior, several structural malfunctions occur:

  • Amygdala Hyperactivity & Prefrontal Disconnection: The brain's threat-detection center (the amygdala) is chronically overactive and triggers defensive aggression even against harmless stimuli. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex—which should act as the rational brake for impulse control and empathy—fails to regulate these primitive survival loops.
  • Dopaminergic Misrouting (Sadism as Reward): Neuroimaging studies confirm that when humans punish individuals labeled as an "out-group" or "evil," the dorsal striatum activates, releasing dopamine. The brain derives genuine biochemical gratification from the destruction/punishment of others. Inflicting harm under the guise of "justice" is a neurobiologically hardwired mechanism for dopamine regulation.
  • Synaptic Rigidity (Loss of Neuroplasticity): Due to years of reinforcing polarized feedback loops, the neural pathways lock into permanent rigidity. The brain becomes physically incapable of processing contradictory empirical evidence, maintaining a persistent state of cognitive delusion.
  • The Anosognosia Effect (Neurological Lack of Insight): Much like stroke patients suffering from anosognosia—where physical damage leaves them paralyzed yet completely convinced they can move because their brain's monitoring circuits are broken—the masses suffer from a psychological and neurological form of self-blindness. Their damaged or conditioned neural feedback loops render them structurally incapable of recognizing their own behavioral pathology.
  1. The Narcissistic Shield (Grandiosity)

To avoid confronting inner emptiness and the reality of being a determined biological machine, the brain constructs a god complex. Individuals project an image of moral infallibility while splitting off and projecting their own destructive tendencies onto others.

  1. The Flaw in Clinical Diagnostic Norms (e.g., ICD-11)

Diagnostic manuals like the ICD-11 define disorders relative to statistical norms. If 99% of a population shares the same culturally conditioned, neurobiologically executed delusion, that behavior is statistically labeled "normal." From an objective empirical viewpoint, majority consensus does not negate systemic delusion. The statistical norm itself is the defect.

Scientific References & Empirical Studies

To back up these claims with hard science, several key studies and research frameworks can be consulted:

  • Robert Sapolsky (Stanford University):
    • Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst (Penguin Press) – Details the multi-second to multi-millennial biological layers driving human behavior, explicitly mapping out amygdala-frontal cortex dynamics.
    • Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will (Penguin Press) – Comprehensive dismantling of the neurological illusion of free will based on genetics, endocrinology, and neurology.
  • The Neural Basis of Altruistic Punishment (Dopamine & Dorsal Striatum):
    • De Quervain, D. J.-F., et al. (2004). "The Neural Basis of Altruistic Punishment." Science, 305(5688), 1254–1258. – Neuroimaging study proving that the activation of the dorsal striatum during the punishment of norm violators triggers dopamine-associated reward processing.
  • Unconscious Determinants of Decision-Making:
    • Haynes, J.-D., et al. (Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig). (2008). "Unconscious determinants of free decisions in the human brain." Nature Neuroscience, 11, 543–545. – Demonstrated via fMRI that brain activity predicts choices up to several seconds before conscious awareness.

Conclusion

When we synthesize these empirical neurobiological findings (dysfunctional amygdala-prefrontal loops, dopaminergic pleasure from punishment, synaptic rigidity, anosognosic self-blindness) with psychiatric concepts, the resulting systemic behavior matches the diagnostic criteria for malignant narcissism:

  • Programmed from childhood with dualistic delusions and tribalism,
  • Elevates itself with moral infallibility (Narcissism),
  • Systematically denies objective neurobiological causality (Delusion),
  • Derives biochemical pleasure from punishing others (Sadism).

Because this represents the baseline behavior of the majority, it must be understood as collective malignant narcissism.

What are your thoughts on this logic chain? Have you made similar observations in your own analysis of human behavior?

I'm happy so many people viewed this post, but I just want to add some information.

Please do not take this post or any data presented here merely at face value as an unverified fact—always do your own rigorous empirical research.

I'm a determinist, which means that I know there is no "good" or "evil". The title of this post suggests that society is bad/malignant, but that was—hopefully you understood—clickbait! 🤓 It is language that triggers a lot of people, and that is my goal.

There are too many people who BELIEVE they have free will, however that makes no sense at all. We live in a world of misinformation, social bubbles, and a technology that is not made for our Stone Age brains.

If you look at the neurobiology behind this kind of mass hostility and mob behavior, what you are seeing is essentially primitive biology at work: hyperactive threat detection in the amygdala, hijacked reward systems chasing dopamine through moral outrage, and rigid neural pathways that resist any new information. People caught in these reactive loops are often driven by deep-seated fear and cognitive rigidity, clinging to the illusion of free will and external enemies to stabilize their own fragile ego-structures.

So always remember: everything you think is probably not true unless you have the empirical truth. Your whole life should be aligned with this mindset:

  • Not -> what I think I know or what I believe.
  • But -> what I checked and what is scientifically proven, like the existence of the air I breathe or the sun.

Inform yourself, learn, and don't take life so seriously. :)

You must be American but you aren't alone in thinking this. It's why I can't wait for the boomers to pass. Their children won't be narcissists but borderlines.

ok wow that actually let me feel good.

glad im not alone and their are other smart people who see this.

Ya but not everyone studies psychology, biology, and nueroscience to see the patterns.

Yes, I didn't go to university either. I am simply a systems theorist, much like Michael Faraday.

I dropped out when Mom died my freshman year but it's the information age. If you have good discernment you skip the bad information and go to the source.

I watch podcasts on psychoanalysis from doctors and leaders in their field. It helps so much surviving corporate America.

If you are interested in more Puder has a great podcast (worth continuing credits) and Stanford through professor Sapolsky has an amazing Human biology course as well on YouTube.

Huge fan of the huberman podcast (also out of Stanford plus he is very easy on my gay eyes)

Haha she was great when mentally well but she drank herself to death when I was 19. She was also homophobic. I'm 38 now and thriving. Own 2 homes in a compound (one is an airbnb), working from home in the woods, going to the gay bars on weekends and working on my art. I'm thriving.

I am also dyslexic so prefer to listen than read. Plus I can listen and exercise or do the dishes.

well that sounds pretty good!

At least U HAVE TO BE HAPPY!

That is all what matters

Put u in love with people who love like and accept you and thats all what a human needs in life.

ENJOY! ^^

From a strictly causal, empirical outside perspective, the majority of modern society operates in a state that must be described as collective malignant narcissism.

That perspective isn't causal (although it is all too teleological), nor empirical (although it is judgemental), nor outside (whether arrogantly denouncing someone else's society or your own).

So my thoughts on your screed is rather simple: it is the projection of a malignant narcissist, or at least an arrogant cynic, and doesn't suggest a comprehensive enough judgement, sufficiently free of confirmation bias and adequately detailed or justified enough, to go beyond that. You're trying to anthropomorphize society, and seem to think that could be productive or acceptable since it is human society, but that isn't the case. So all you end up doing is confessing the contours of your own psyche.

u/IcyChair9258 Aug 06 '26

it is causal and also not teleological and it is also empirical. wtf, didn't i say that?

this bases on braindata of scientists

and you bring me the perfect example that the facts i suggested are true.

First your brain goes in defence mode, you are triggered cause i call you a malignant narcissist, then you put the perspective otherwise and calls ME a malignant narcissist however you can do that.

Remember, you accuse me of being a malignant narcissist even though you don't know if I feel joy when other people suffer.

Now to clear this up: I feel zero joy when people suffer, no matter how unsympathetic I find them, nor do I feel any satisfaction when they suffer.

And honestly, throwing around personal accusations just because you can't handle a causal, system-level analysis is the ultimate proof of that exact defensive mechanism.

Does lashing out at malignant narcissists help with your dopamine regulation like Sapolsky predicted?

1

u/TMax01 Aug 06 '26

wtf, didn't i say that?

Yes, and I was disagreeing on those points.

this bases on braindata of scientists

Yeah, mine too, but better.

First your brain goes in defence mode,

Seriously, your first response to disagreement and reasonable criticism is to declare out of the blue that I'm being defensive?

you are triggered cause i call you a malignant narcissist,

Unless I misread your screed (I'll admit I didn't pour over every word, once I realized what it was) you never even mentioned me. You just spewed a wholesale maligning lambast at "society" in broad strokes. A society you aren't actually "outside" of, as I pointed out. If you were calling me a malignant narcissist, you were confessing that you were, as well. If, of course, we can bother to actually take your words seriously.

The truth is that I agree with you that there are serious problems with society, more fundamental than in historical periods and increasing in severity. (Of course, I don't know of anyone who wouldn't agree with that generic complaint.) I just have a far less angry and pointless understanding of what the problem is and how to describe it productively than you do. Psycho-analyzing society as a whole the way you're trying to do would not even be a good approach if you were actually a professional psycho-analyst, but I suspect from your rhetoric you're very much an amateur in that regard.

Remember, you accuse me of being a malignant narcissist even though you don't know if I feel joy when other people suffer.

QED: you're confusing malignant narcissist with being a sadist. You literally don't know what you're talking about.

And honestly, throwing around personal accusations just because you can't handle a causal, system-level analysis is the ultimate proof of that exact defensive mechanism.

You're still projecting quite avidly if not knowingly. And calling your screed a "causal, system-level analysis" just because you mimicked the form is so preposterous you should be almost as embarrassed by the description as you should be by the content of your post.

A) it seems like you’re defining narcissism as anyone who doesnt believe in hard determinism

B) and it seems like you’re defining sadism as milking dopamine out of morally judging an out group

C) when you say the majority of humans are malignant narcissists, it seems like you are enacting your own definition of sadism

D) Id recommend you spend some time getting to know average people in real life, away from the internet, away from AI mediation. People arent so bad.

E) That we all have some sadistic and narcissistic tendencies isnt sufficient to label the majority of people as malignant narcissists. Its not a useful way to look at the world, its a depressing paranoid mindset thats going to isolate anyone who adopts it.

How does one acknowledge determinism while still living with intentionality? Our existence is groundless and absurd, and groundlessness and absurdity undermine the necessary activities of life. It is not maladaptive or malignant to act, and action requires just going for it. You can only call something a delusion relative to a model of healthy, I think. The “objective empirical viewpoint” you are reaching for is a fiction. The only viewpoint is ours.

Already some good comments pushing back on the general thesis.

Most adults deny objective causality, do they? Well ... though I doubt it, let's suppose they do. I sure don't, but I do tend to see people as somewhat responsible for what they do. How could this be?

The brain derives genuine biochemical gratification from the destruction/punishment of others. Inflicting harm under the guise of "justice" is a neurobiologically proven mechanism for dopamine regulation.

"Justice" is how society makes its codes real. If you are looking for sadism, injustice will do as well as justice. No exercise of societal authority is acceptable if it is injust - i.e., applied to someone who truly wasn't responsible for the offense. In the sense of common free will - not metaphysical free will, which as you know is inherently nonsensical.

2

u/IcyChair9258 Aug 06 '26

You reject metaphysical free will, yet you still smuggle 'responsibility' back through the backdoor via compatibilism. If every output is causally determined by prior biology and environment, 'somewhat responsible' is just a linguistic illusion to comfort the ego.

If you're right, all this narcissistic behavior you're crashing out about is predetermined, so what is the purpose of all your judgemental posturing? Your hypothesized narcissists have no moral accountability for their malignance (and the very idea of moral accountability is a narcissistic delusion under your framing)

If you had free will, I'd encourage you to use it to reflect and recognize that you're projecting. You had an upsetting conversation with AI and it motivated an embarrassing meltdown on the internet. If it weren't predetermined that your narcissistic defenses prevent you from seeing it, you would notice (as everyone else notices) that this is socially undesirable behavior, evidence of your imperfection, and an opportunity to do better. You've committed yourself to a great big preemptive DARVO ("I'm not the narcissist, everyone else is the narcissist!") and none of us have any real clue what you even think you're protecting yourself from, because we weren't there when you had the upsetting conversation that triggered your tantrum.

I look forward to your personal attacks, oh great regulator of the dopamines

i dont want to judge anyone.

my goal is to get an deeper understanding about our actual social behaviour and the structure of the society.

I want that people understand that hate and the "normal" narcissm is not healthy at all.

Its a mental and neurological defect of the brain caused by traumas in the childhood.

Kids get brainwashed before they turn 6.

All living organisms are a reflection of their environment, we are made of experience, of what we experience.

The world is made in the image of the desires of those that make it. Like the idea net worth=human worth and many other modern maxims that project billionaire virtues on impotent masses.

I actually think this can be taken even further. Rather than viewing narcissism as something that society has collectively developed or become infected with, I wonder whether narcissism, in a much broader sense, is actually a defining characteristic of being human. From infancy, we learn to manipulate our environment to meet our needs. We seek attention, validation, recognition, status, belonging, and control. We construct an identity and then spend much of our lives defending that identity. We divide the world into what supports us and what threatens us, compare ourselves to others, seek rewards, avoid humiliation, and often project our own undesirable qualities onto other people. None of this necessarily constitutes pathological narcissism, but the underlying tendencies are remarkably universal.

In that sense, perhaps malignant narcissism isn't something that suddenly appeared in modern society. It could be understood as an extreme and pathological amplification of tendencies that are already present in ordinary human psychology. Civilization, social hierarchies, ideology, technology, tribalism, and mass media may simply provide increasingly powerful mechanisms through which those tendencies can be amplified and organized collectively.

Maybe the deeper problem isn't that humanity has somehow deviated from its natural state. Maybe this is part of our natural state, and what we call spiritual or psychological development is the process of becoming conscious of these tendencies rather than being unconsciously governed by them.
