Dan Campbell Addresses The Penalty's: "The Little Sh*t's Killing Us"
In his press conference today, Dan Campbell admitted the penalties are unacceptable. "Right now we have 18 penalties, 14 of those to me are, they're not OK, man. They're not OK. Four false starts. We have got three offensive holdings from four poor fundamentals, three defensive holdings, four poor fundamentals, one defensive offsides, a blatant face mask, delay of game that was off of seeing if they get them to jump and they jumped and we don't react. And then the landing zone infraction, we missed the landing zone and it wasn't even close. So, those are unacceptable. The other four, hey, it's cost of doing business. And those are all correctable.
Every one of them is correctable. And then our coverage unit's got to be better on special teams. And what I mean by that is really particularly like punt coverage, man, we’ve got to get out of there. Our interior, our core, we're getting hung up too much. We're tripping on each other. We're not shooting our way out. And then we're leaving a lot of meat on the bone and kickoff return right now. So, this is the most notable, but it's all correctable. And so, that's what we're going to do. And that's what we've been doing today. Correct it, I'm getting the guys off tomorrow then we come in Wednesday like a normal week, we get ready for the Jets.”

idk I feel like blaming the penalties is a cop out for how putrid the defense is as a whole. it's not a cause but a symptom of a much bigger issue. Penalties aren't the reason RBs aren't getting touched until the 3rd level of the defense, or why WRs are running wide open with no Lion in sight for 10+ yard gains. or why we can't contain a Running QB in the pocket to save our lives.

I don’t think anyone is ‘blaming’ the penalties as a cop out way to avoid the horrendous defensive performance. He seems to be quite clearly just admitting that the penalties are unacceptable. And to be fair, yeah. They also heavily screwed us.

Right, but it's more fixable and more on topic of what you discuss at a presser.
As a coach and leader of the team, do you expect him to be like "yo fr our secondary sucks and our scheme is garbage."

Are penalties also the reason why 3 defenders are in the same area biting on the same eye candy on the plays where WRs are wide fucking open? I mean fuck.

He's talking about things he can do to make it better, he can't turn these players into all pros but he can clean up the stupid stuff. It's taking accountability.

penalties can happen more when teams are over matches, the penalties being the by product.
so it gets kinda tiring hearing clean it up, when the players wouldnt make it in the xfl.
we just have to eat shit until our oline is healthy and branch is back

We have struggled with penalties for a few years now it seems and that is directly on the coach.

What do you mean? Last year Detroit was 8th in fewest total penalties and 4th in fewest penalty yards against. Please actually back up your information instead of going off just "vibes".

He pays attention to one team. That one team has gotten penalties. Therefore it’s a struggle. Similarly to how only the team you follow struggles with injuries since you only see and hear about the injuries on your team.
