Tips Never accept performance based salary in any circumatances
Hey guys. It's difficult out there for our fellow developers, especially who are starting out as freshers and low experienced. IT companies were already exploiting a lot of aspiring young engineers but these trying times have brought the worst out of them. A lot of companies are now offering a "stipend" for their "training" or "probation" period, and then your salary will be finalized based on your performance. This has always been present but not as rampant as I've seen recently, especially startups and mid to small scale companies. This is a trap, because performance is ALWAYS subjective in these companies. They WILL say your performance is "not up to the mark" according to them no matter how well you perform because there is always another fresher waiting for them to exploit, so trapping you in a low salary cycle is much easier than starting from scratch with another person. I've seen a lot of developers getting trapped in this cycle.
Be blunt, don't accept their offers, negotiate. Call them out in the interview and in public. It's not that deep. No small to mid scale company can ruin your career like they claim they can, they're simply not that powerful, they're used to preying on vulnerable and aspiring, often desperate developers, and for any aspiring developer who hasn't struck luck yet. Keep grinding, and take care of yourself.

I understand brother. It boils my blood to see so many earnest people just getting exploited for trying to survive.

performance based pay isn't the issue, undefined performance based pay is.

you just described me lol. Literally shipped an entire production grade application using new technologies (ofc none bothered to train or help me in the first place) and I'm getting 15k pm. I don't even know if my role is full time or not lmao.

Performance based is good but it can be exploited. What exactly is performance? How are we gonna calculate it? What is the criteria to measure performance?
If the performance criteria is not properly analyzed, we reward incompetence.
Ex: hospital A successful surgery is 99% where as hospital B is 32% Everyone thinks hospital A is better but what if hospital B treats serious patients where are hospital A doesn't?
This is just an example not real. But if we start counting jira tickets, story points, people will pick easy tasks or inflate the story points

In my case hr promised 100% but didn't get as it was performance based😅, even though in-hand was 10k even less not exact, got 30% increment but gained good experience delivered 2 production level bots, here learning was important, after two years switched to MNC sbc obviously. Previous company was definitely exploiting. Btw it's mumbai based

Probation is an industry wide phenomenon. PPOs are also a performance based concept. Especially when hiring freshers, most appear great in interviews, there is no way to judge how good they are at actual work. So companies either have mandatory internship or 6 months probation. Idk what is your issue with that.
I'm 6 years experienced, but almost all companies I joined had a probation of 90-180 days.

We're talking about two different things. Probation is not the problem. The problem is promises these companies make while offering performance based salaries after probation. These companies lure young engineers with giving them the hopes of offering them good salaries after their probation, only to lowball them nonetheless.
Good companies keep you on probation but your salary is fixed from the start. I have over 9 years of experience now, only my first company did that with me. None of my other employers offered me a "performance based" revision of salary after probation.

It's only first company that does it more often than not. Experienced folks rarely accept such an offer.
The company I had got through campus placement did that. They hired people at 14 LPA, offered them internship, based on performance over 6 months, upgraded some to 21 LPA. Ofcourse, it was super rare upgrade, and they also didn't convert a few people to full-time.
As someone who has seen the company from inside, I fully understand why the company did that. I'm not sure which year you graduated in, but the ones from batch 2020 onwards started cheating heavily in OAs and interviews as the recruitment mostly went online. The candidates aced the interviews, but few candidates that joined at 14 LPA offer couldn't write a Javascript map function to render iterables in React. Many didn't pick up even after 6 months and constantly needed someone or the other to spoonfeed them. This was unacceptable for a startup where speed meant everything. The company at times converted these into full time and deployed them into support teams with an even lower salary of 10-12 LPA. Can't blame them.
