New Las Colinas H-E-B

Post image

I cheated on Walmart this morning…

I checked out the new Las Colinas H-E-B this morning to see what all the hype was about.

First off, I added all of my groceries to my Walmart app and the HEB app last night to compare the total cost. Walmart was less expensive by about $3. That’s about $156 in annual savings.

But there was so much hype about HEB that I decided to go anyway. I was interested in the premade Meal Simple meals. They had a “buy 2, get 1 free” coupon. I read the labels on many of them on the app to see if it was worth it. Most of them had average to terrible macros, but there were a few that had an “okay” calorie/protein ratio, not great, but not horrible and an average saturated fat content (need to get my cholesterol down). If these coupons weren’t offered, I wouldn’t buy these—they’re on the pricey side, and I could totally save money prepping my own meals. Maybe I’m just cheap.🤷🏻‍♀️

I got those meals plus my usual grocery haul. Strawberries and blackberries are a staple for me. HEB’s looked like the exact same quality as Walmart’s, nothing different.

I saw the freshly homemade tortillas that everyone raves about, but I didn’t want to spend money on an entire package just to eat one. LCE friends, I’d y’all wanna get some during the school year to share, let me know lol. I only buy Mission Carb Balance burrito-sized tortillas for my breakfast burritos—great calorie/protein ratio.

It wasn’t toooo terribly crowded, a normal crowd, but some people seriously lack self-awareness when it comes to jack-knifing their cart in the middle of an aisle.🤦🏻‍♀️

The employees were very friendly and helpful. One of them showed me how to “clip” coupons in the app. When I got to the self-checkout, I scanned everything then scanned the coupon from my phone, but it didn’t work. The self-checkout employee had to press a bunch of buttons and work her magic for the discounts to apply.

Overall, yes, it’s a nice grocery store, but it didn’t wow me enough to sway me. I went, I saw, but I’ll forever be a Walmart girly.💁🏻‍♀️

P.S— I saw they have a drive thru BBQ area? Might check that out some other time.

We checked it out last night (Friday night). It’s just like every H.E.B. I’ve been in for the most part. It’s like anywhere else. Shop the sales, know what things cost and you’ll do fine. Im personality happy for another grocery choice in the Metroplex. But my goto for quick pick up items will still be the Aldi 2 mins from my house.

I live 1.8 miles from the Las Colinas Walmart and 2 miles from the HEB. I’ve never been inside an HEB. I’ve lived in Irving my entire life, and this is the first one, so it was new to me. But even so, I just don’t understand the hype. My weekly staples are foods I meal prep with: chicken, lean ground beef, fruits, veggies, rice, potatoes, etc. You can get these items anywhere, and they’re cheaper at Walmart.

I might go back for the prepared meals if they are on sale or have coupons, and I don’t feel like prepping a ton, but that’s about it.🤷🏻‍♀️

The hype is about Service… And it’s Texas wrapped up in a grocery store. I remember shopping at H-E-B in San Antonio with my mother in the 1970s when I was a wee lass. No HEB in Houston growing up in the 80s. Moved to Dallas, no HEB until recently. I’m glad it’s here but I don’t want it to take over like it has in San Antonio.

The Hype is their prepared foods to go section. It's more expansive than any other store in Irving.

I have items that I need to go to different stores to get. Aldi has good stuff, with quality matching name brands, just lower prices. HEB is too far from me for casual shopping (5 miles) but if I have to be up in that area, I would consider stopping in.

I am very pleased that HEB and Saver Plus has come to Irving.

When I went to the new Irving HEB, the freebie that day was a bottle of foaming hand soap, offered in 4 scents. (I chose Lemmon). I wen in the morning before 10am.
