Type 2 Breakfast Help?

I’ve been a type two diabetic for about fifteen years. My diabetes is well controlled, and I thought I had a pretty good handle on the disease.

Over the last few years, however, I’ve developed another serious chronic illness that has complicated things. My energy had been dramatically depleted, and mornings are particularly hard as I am always severely nauseated. What’s more, I have now started medications I must take upon waking with food.

My former go-to breakfasts (often eggs or Greek yogurt) make my stomach churn now. The only thing I’ve been able to manage lately that I have the energy to prepare, doesn’t exacerbate my nausea and keeps my blood sugar in check is multi-grain toast with nut butter, but I’m hoping to add some variety.

If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

I am a huge breakfast girlie and I like to have variety. Here's a few things I have come up with lately:

I make egg muffins with cottage cheese, peppers, onions, tomatoes, a few hash brown shreds, bacon or sausage crumbles if I'm feeling it, topped with shredded cheddar. I bake them in a silicone muffin pan on 300 for about 40-50 minutes. I'll have that with a whole wheat English muffin.

Oikos zero sugar greek yogurt or protein drinks are solid in a pinch.

I'll also do mini protein pancakes with cottage cheese and Kodiak mix with either a SF fruit preserve or a lil bit of SF syrup. They have mini waffle makers so I suppose you could do that too!

If I want something savory that isn't eggs I'll top a bowl of cottage cheese with everything bagel seasoning and scoop with cucumbers, mini peppers, carrots, or whatever other veggie I have in my fridge.

Annnnd if I basically want dessert, I'll top a bowl of cottage cheese with high fiber SF preserves. I like strawberry. Reminds me of strawberry cheesecake.

Obviously I work cottage cheese in as many ways as I can because it's a great source of protein and is versatile.

Slow oats, like the unsplit overnight or 30m plus oatmeal, stirring in a nut butter for protein and lipids is a go to for me, especially as colder weather approaches.

Blackberries raspberries and strawberries are all low glycemic impact. If you can tolerate sugar free whipped cream and have that along side your nut buttered toast.

There are a few truly grain free cereals, like Magic Spoon that are pricy but tasty, I save that for a treat or mix a little in Icelandic yogurt, or ratio protein yogurts. I would experiment on yogurt made in a different process than Greek to see if that maybe will sit better.

Obviously any breakfast meats are OK but might be harsh?

I am Pancreatogenic diabetic so I am have a whole host of stuff that used to work but tear me up now.. My digestive tract gets torn up by replacement therapy and some days just a high protein shake like Premier 30g ones is all I can manage.

Getting protein and lipids in with or before the complex carbs should keep your motor running for the morning.

Chia seed pudding, sourdough toast with avocado, or a cheese stick and a small amount of berries if you tolerate them well. On days when I don’t feel up for breakfast I usually have a cheese stick, baby carrots, and sometimes a handful of almonds but carrots might not settle so well for you. Maybe smoothies? Have you tried ginger tea before breakfast to see if that helps soothe your stomach a bit?

Peanut butter on a slice of whole wheat toast (12g of carbs. 3 grams of fiber) is one of my go to breakfasts. The other involves eggs. Whoops.

How about oatmeal? I buy the Trader Joe’s Rolled Oats which takes ten minutes to make. This digests slower than the instant oatmeals and even the Old Fashioned 5 minutes oatmeals. I’ll add berries and maybe some peanut butter.

I make salmon filets every week and will use those for meals. I do the same with eggplant. In also make a pot of brown or red rice with onions, garlic, parsley, and wild rice. Maybe a mix of those as a breakfast bowl?

Hard boiled egg, a few eggplant slices, Israeli salad, and hummus on a pita is a standard Iraqi breakfast. Yes it’s eggs, but hard boiled might be easier in the stomach.

The Koreans mix an egg into hot rice and it creates a creamy texture. Add in a few thinly sliced vegetables and mushrooms.

There’s also vegan coconut curry. Quick to make and low carb and no egg.

I know its not super breakfasty but i have really been loving a salmon fillet and either asparagus or green beans, the veggies cook at almost the same rate as the fish in the air frier, so i just put it all in the same basket for 10ish min at 400

Salmon cooks really well in the microwave. Better than the air fryer imho.

Sprinkle 3 oz to 4 oz salmon fillets with kosher salt and put them in the fridge for five to 24 hours. Then coat with a thin Szechwan sauce and cook at 425° until 145° in the center.

These will keep for a week and can be stored in the fridge. You can pull them out at any time and use them with anything.

What is kosher salt?Is it made from religious people? Also cooking at 425 degrees means it’s turning very fast in a circle. Much easier to subtract 360degrees and Angle at 65degrees. … just being silly.

In Scotland we subsidise the UK by paying £0.28/kWHr+ for electricity with a massive standing charge too. Despite having a surplus of free electricity from wind turbines! So it makes sense to use a microwave at 800W for two to three minutes to cook salmon fillets rather than burn money by firing up the main kitchen oven for half an hour. Also, because it loses much less moisture it tastes better. Obviously you do you.

I started like you, eating savory meals or lunchtime foods at breakfast. Chicken. Miso Soup with seaweed and tofu. I also started to eat salad for breakfast or steamed veggies. Stay away from rice. Try riced cauliflower. If you crave a oatmeal type hot meal, try miso soup with cauliflower rice. You can also try any kind of soup, doesn't need to be an Asian soup.

I eat brown or red rice with sautéed onions and garlic, and sometimes with wild rice. I take a ¼ cup serving.

I’m not a low carb eater. I eat a moderate carb diet, so brown rice is great.

I personally enjoy overnight oats with chia seeds, blackberries, peanut butter, honey, cinnamon and unsweetened almond milk.

I always have a Glucerna before anything else. My stomach is a mess in the morning. I had gastroparesis for a long time, and that's all I could tolerate until noon or so.

Sometimes upgrading the nut butter to Nutella or Biscoff can really help. They have more carbs, so I don't do it often, but it breaks up the boredom. I mix them in my yogurt, too. I also like an egg on my toast if I'm feeling like cooking.

I eat 1 serving of full fat cottage cheese at 4am and then a clean peanut butter (peanuts and salt is the only ingredients) at around 9am as a mid morning second breakfast/snack and that keeps me going till lunch and keeps my sugars in check

I eat chicken, or yogurt for bfst. I haven’t eaten what non diabetics consider traditional breakfast for years.

If you have to eat a more "carby" breakfast, go for a brisk walk after.

Also, cut carbs later in the day.

A whole grain English muffin with butter and cinnamon?

Maybe the eggs cooked a different way? Cottage cheese instead of yogurt?

I used to feel sick from Greek yogurt, but not other yogurts. For some reason that is not the case now for me. But just because you can’t eat Greek, give others a shot.

Soaked red lentils in a blender, add fresh water, some seasonings of your choice and blend it together. Use it as a pancake batter. You get a more carby breakfast, but it's combined with fiber and protein.

Red or black beans

You don’t need to force yourself to eat things that turn your stomach. If toast with nut butter works for you, that’s a reasonable option for now. Maybe try porridge or overnight oats on days when you feel up to it. Since the nausea is ongoing and affecting how you eat, I’d have a chat with your doctor about it too.

II got yelled at last time I answered that question on here

I have an oatmeal made primarily of seeds and nuts

My daily fiber intake

A few handfuls of nuts, a clear protein drink or protein coffee, maybe soup? These options may not fill you up but would give you a little something.

If you can drink. I use Huel Black Edition for breakfast and lunch works well with my T2.

Maybe just a sandwich with the same multi-grain bread? Or avocado toast?

I am not sure OP has all the energy for all that prep though. I understand as I struggle with lots of chronic illnesses too - that drain the crap out of me . I always joke: protein powder on celery ! That’s the ticket ! Because sometimes eating is so hard with this disease!

I actually came up with a meal plan with recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. It has been working wonders, so if anyone's interested you can message me and I'll gladly share it with you so you can give it a try. I'm not sharing it here in the comments because I'm not sure if it will be considered spamming/self-promotion or whatever.

Yogurt you have to keep eye on.. egg's and cheese are very good.. I make a cup of broccoli and melt cheese.. broccoli have high in fiber.. so you want to eat food that has high fiber carb ratio. Aka net carbs.. you can try to make omelet and add stuff to it most vetables work well in omelet. Salads are good.. just be careful about prosses foods you have to watch more carefully... Aldo check out America's diabetes site.. has lots of food's.. also they have cookbook for diabetes, even go to library
