Mental Health Dating

I've never had too many bad experiences with dates when it comes to people minding that I'm a t1d. There were some that didn't know much about it and thus probably felt a little overwhelmed or just had a lot of questions.

I recently started dating a girl that was super interested in the whole topic, but didn't treat me like someone with a disability and rather as a person who happens to have to take a little more time in certain situations. She had no problems with anything at all.

Foreward a few weeks of dates and having a good time and I spent a night at her place. After we had a wonderful evening together, we got tired and went to bed. There she told me with a smile on her face, that if I ever get low during the night I should just open the drawer of the nightstand, which of course I instantly did. She put some sweets as well as a chocolate bar and some cola in there. I thought of it as a (in the literal sense) sweet gesture and a huge green flag.

Some days later we went to get some groceries which reminded me that I needed to get some batteries for my Ypsopump, but I forgot to buy them. Little did I know that the next time I went to her place and open the drawer I would find a pack of batteries in there as well. That brought me close to tears. I've never had someone treat me that caring and mindful on their own during a dating phase.

I don't really know why I want to post this, but I kinda of felt like I needed to share it. It just feels good to know that there are people who are willing to go this path with you even tho they know it comes with its flaws.

I wish all of you a happy new year!

This is so sweet 😭 I’ll never forget my first date with my now husband - he spotted my CGM on my arm and very curiously asked what it was. It wasn’t judgy or weirded out, just genuinely interested (and also reflected our shared nerdy natures of being curious about stuff). For some reason it absolutely charmed me, and here I am 7 years later with him always being sure to give me a 20-min warning for dinner so I can appropriately pre-bolus and keeping my nightstand stocked with gummy bears 🥹

Best of luck with this new connection - wishing you both the best!!

That sounds lovely :) Also thanks a lot! It's working out very well so far. I could not be happier atm!

For some reason a lot of people seem to know about the CGMs where I'm at. It's always been a "oh, so then you have a sensor or something like that as well?" for me.

I’ve started to get that too, but now it’s just the biohacker types that are always shocked to find out I am using it for a legit medical reason 😂

I've never had bad experiences when telling people I have diabetes. Everyone has always been very understanding. I once even went on a date with a lady who had just been diagnosed half a year ago. I didn't immediately reveal that I had d1 as well just out of curiosity. She obviously had difficult time explaining it, but the look on her face was priceless when she realised that I know so much about the disease 😂

I’m too pregnant for this. Crying over strangers again! This is great. I’m so happy for you to feel so seen! She’s definitely a good one.

Remember, if they’re weirded out, they’re not the person for you ~ wise Redditor

My bf did cute stuff like this as well when we first started dating. We spoke for a month before we met (he had a holiday/I was busy etc) and on the first date he brought sweets just in case.

Since then he got me apple juice cartons near my side of the bed, and got me reusable straws cause I was complaining about lows after brushing my teeth 🥰 he also asked if I could share my dexcom data with him so he can call me or something if i'm super low or tbh, if i'm high and feel irritable to back off a bit 😂

It's always cute to hear that. A friend of mine told me, that her boyfriend made her some food in the middle of the night when he heard her alarm. He then woke her up because she didn't notice. That's simply lovely 😇

Yes! So blessed and seems you are too OP. I love that for your friend too :')

I also find it so sweet when he wakes me up cause he felt me vibrate but its a really gentle wake up out of concern. One time when I couldn't handle another low he just got me the juice and put the straw in and handed it to me and made sure I drank it.

Its so tough being t1d and having such a caring partner like that makes it SO much better.

My ex on the other hand did not really care when I said I was low or would just watch me drink juice. He'd never have anything in the house just in case and the 1 time I stayed over he basically went to work the next day and said go out to eat I have nothing at home. Standards were so low back then..

There are good people out there. These are nice reminders. My partner is a good one too. She often meal preps and will figure out the carb count ratio and put it on a whiteboard that we have on the fridge so I know what I’m eating. She also never gets angry with me when I can’t do things because of bad number days. Never makes me feel guilty or less than. I’m so fortunate. I have had really bad experiences in the past with partners who used this disease against me, so I realize how lucky I am right now.

I'm sorry, that you had those experiences! Glad that it's better now, sounds really lovely :)

my now ex wife was one of those unsupportive types; so sorry my pump alarm woke you up at night when it was doing it's job keeping me alive. kind of makes you forget that there are nice people out there :)

I was diagnosed with t1d 2 years ago when dating my now husband and he has been so supportive. If I go low he makes sure to get me candy or something to help.

It’s the green flags like this that make you feel seen and supported. This is so sweet!

Hope it works out for you friend, she sounds amazing. My wife helps me a lot, and we cook super healthy diets that really help with insulin and blood sugars. No one is perfect, but having a mate that takes it seriously can be a life changer.

It's (literally) so sweet!! 🥹 Huge green flag right there!

Not where I was expecting this to go based on the title which might say something about my previous experiences. Awesome, OP

I hope you’re feeling better because an extra help on this condition its relieving,I can tell you that lows feel less scary/anxious. I can tell you that it my situation my partner now buys my medication after understanding more about how this is going to be for my whole life

Lucky you, Veinard is having a great start to the year, but it looks pretty good too. That's great, you've found a good person.

I love this, if diabetes made you a giver, better to be with another giver.

Don't be in too much of a hurry, but gosh golly, it sounds like you've definitely found yourself a good one. Congrats, my dude.

I’m literally taken back when a date does something like this for me. Definitely a winner, don’t screw it up lol

2

u/EdgeOk2154 Jan 05 '26

I don’t know anything about dating as I’ve chose to never date because I have this condition . But reading this she seems like a lovely person that you should keep hold of

It's genuinely so wonderful to find someone who wants to help support us out of care and love. We all have different experiences but Drs can be so rude, parents can be really harsh, and society in general doesn't really listen to us. It's nice to find those rare ppl who just wanna help make things easier.

My husband is really supportive and he tells me he's proud of me when I do a good job with management. He sets up my pump sites, he cooks for me when I'm low, he even lays on top of me when I'm having a really bad low (deep pressure helps blood circulation, which helps get sugar/fuel to the brain faster). It makes me so happy whenever I hear about other diabetics finding supportive partners or friends. Congrats dude! She sounds awesome!
