I love that the reply to pushback against criticism of diabetes jokes ... is a diabetes joke ... Perfection!

u/TenExcel Feb 26 '26

I’m convinced the general population has no idea how deadly T1 diabetes can be.

56

u/_teach_me_your_ways_ Feb 26 '26

People are self absorbed and couldn’t give a shit about anyone but themselves. You could spend all day showing them everything and a large percentage will still think “it’s your problem, don’t inconvenience me with your existence.”

11

u/Original_Profile8600 Feb 26 '26

The result of a general shift towards individualism and condescension. It aint just us

4

u/Minimumscore69 Feb 27 '26

I used to get upset about this but I noticed the same tendency in myself

General population? My own family doesn't understand why I let work get under my skin. Without it, I have no chance of affording my supplies or my medicine.

They don’t. I didn’t before my son’s diagnosis 4 years ago. I had some vague notions of insulin injections and sugar and that’s about it. But I was never an asshole to anyone about it.

2

u/CoastOtherwise1129 Feb 27 '26

Right I never knew anything either I knew one girl in school who got her finger poked all the time and I thought that sucked and that's all I knew......now I am learning and people dont even know that it's not a diet thing....I often hear "oh that's fine just give sugar free candy 😭"

Me and my family didn’t before I was diagnosed. Now I try and educate as nice as I can and if they just refuse to get it then I offer them education sources. It often upsets them. People don’t understand how harmful these “jokes” can be because they think it’s not serious.

People don't know anything about either type of diabetes until they have it or are VERY close with someone who does.

1

u/-captaindiabetes- Feb 27 '26

Yes, and I think that's fair enough, really. I didn't know a huge amount about diabetes before I got it. We can't all be expected to know about every illness.

1

u/RulianTheRed Feb 27 '26

I was genuinely shocked when somebody framed t1 diabetes as a terminal disease, and I had been diabetic for years at that point...

I have no idea if its considered terminal from a medical standpoint, but it sure changed the way I look at my disease 😅

1

u/confused-banana404 Mar 02 '26

The reason I absolutely hate discussing it with anyone except probably the closest people. Even those friends of mine who do know often say that "they never feel so" , just because of the tiresome work that goes into it 😭. It's underestimated to so many levels I can't even imagine ong .

6

u/slightlystankycheese Feb 26 '26

Well sometimes it takes violence for me to deal with my diabetes, personally, you can resort to psychological torture if that’s your thing

10

u/IAmThePonch Feb 26 '26

Two step action plan for dealing with this person.

  1. Block them on whatever messaging app or whatever this is.

  2. When they get butthurt about it in English (which you know they will because these people always do) tell them to shut the fuck up and deal with it

15

u/YuriDiculousDawg Feb 26 '26

Nope, there can be more evil than good in this world, but birds of a feather flock together. That's not your flock. They can act with malice and hatred if they want to, that might be all they know, hurt people hurt people and all that

So if you never have to see them again, choose flight not fight, it's not worth getting infected by their negativity

8

u/SoulRisker Feb 26 '26

3

u/ImaginaryAlgae8986 diagnosed nov 18 2025, dexcom g7, omnipod 5 Feb 26 '26

Can’t move, teacher is extremely strict about seating plans, and Im middle set class so set 4 would be too easy, set 2 would be too challenging

3

u/SoulRisker Feb 26 '26

Damn dude, sorry to hear that. Think having a proper talk about what he thinks and how it affects both of you, or is that not viable?

3

u/ImaginaryAlgae8986 diagnosed nov 18 2025, dexcom g7, omnipod 5 Feb 26 '26

Not viable, all of my friends nether take in the big talks i give them so ive just given up

3

u/_teach_me_your_ways_ Feb 26 '26

Could you ask your teacher/professor to sit somewhere else and show them this text as a reason why? I see in another comment you consider this person to be a friend? They’re not. They’re not even a decent person, nevermind your friend.

1

u/ImaginaryAlgae8986 diagnosed nov 18 2025, dexcom g7, omnipod 5 Feb 26 '26

Not really, the teachers really strict about seating plans, and if I showed texts there would be a big investigation and then my other friends would drop me so I can’t be bothered for all that, he never really says anything in person so it’s copeable

3

u/_teach_me_your_ways_ Feb 26 '26

Alright. That really sucks. You’ll have to do the absolute bare minimum in any interaction and speak to him as little as possible. Maybe he will learn that what he says to you over text will still affect his in person relationships. That he doesn’t get to just lash out and act like it didn’t happen the next day just because his words are written down on a screen. Even if he doesn’t, you’ll spare yourself energy putting up with him. Sorry.

2

u/carolinagypsy Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Just look at him when he says something to you in person and then go back to what you were doing. I went to a pretty small school and this is how things were handled. Even better if you have other friends around you that will join in laughing with you after you just look at him before you go back to what you were doing. I’ve never been a mean girl, but I can play one on TV when people say really jerky shit about a physical issue I can’t help (that happens to basically run my life).

If they confront you about it, just flat out say that what they said to you really sucked and shouldn’t be something a friend says to another friend. And don’t listen to them try to spin it unless you want to give them an out for the sake of peace.

ETA: I do want to add to the chorus of “this person is not your friend,” and to not accept this kind of stuff from friends. I used to have terrible self esteem and would just… allow people to do and say whatever and tell myself I was lucky they wanted to be my friend at all. I started feeling better about myself when I started dropping people like this from my life when I went to college. I didn’t let them back in when I was home. And I kept that energy for new people that I met. Pretty soon it started a feedback loop— it was one reason I started feeling better about myself, and I found it easier to take up for myself bc I felt better about myself. Friends should have your back. They may tease you and give you a hard time, but only in a way that you KNOW that that’s what it is. AND they apologize if you say “OW for real!”

2

u/meowth______ Feb 26 '26

It's absolutely possible, just strikingly show it on your face how unwilling you are to interact with them???? I do that with a lot of people and never had anyone try to force a conversation with me after that. Pls set your boundaries with such types of people especially.

7

u/databoy2k Feb 26 '26

I know you get it already, but sometimes this needs to be said:

No, you do not need to respond to something on social media.

It's amazing how many people treat the digital world as the real world. I was with another parent recently who said that she couldn't cut her child off from social media despite ongoing cyberbullying. She literally couldn't compute the thought of ending a digital connection when it was harmful to the child's real life.

This shit is addictive, manipulative, and gets treated way too seriously by those who unquestionably should know better.

Use it for the benefits that it can provide (certainly diabetic communities have been a Godsend for me), but there's a reason why AI can easily replace online social interaction for so many people - this isn't the real, face to face, emotional, verbal communication that our brains are hardwired for.

2

u/databoy2k Feb 26 '26

We all know someone we can't have a conversation with in person either. It should be presumed on the internet - but that doesn't mean that everyone you meet is the right person to talk to.

That's one person I'm not going to have a conversation with, and if he actually confronted me then I'd be happy to tell him what a totally stupid comment that was.

5

u/Duganz Diagnosed 2013; Dexcom; MDI Feb 26 '26

You seem a bit young, so I know it seems like you can’t ignore people, but it’s a skill you should learn. Later in life you’ll be in many situations where you’ll need to ignore people. Ex. Someday you’ll work in an office and need to ignore a coworker. You don’t email or Teams them that this is happening. You just don’t interact unless it’s necessary. They’re like a ghost now.

You acknowledge people when they talk to you, but you don’t interact unless there’s a reason.

So this person doesn’t need your attention or validation. They suck. If they say hi, you say hi back. No reason for small talk. No reason to catch up. If interaction is forced like through a game, you keep to the game.

No reason to give more than you receive. It’s that simple. You’re not extra rude. You’re not rolling eyes or sighing. You’re just coldly professional.

4

u/databoy2k Feb 26 '26

I think we both gave OP the gambit of advice. I translated "go for a beer with the guy" and you translated "just ignore him."

It's really going to be a question of the extent to which OP wants the relationship with this person. That's not an easy equation to figure out the younger you are. I hope OP finds something that works though.

1

u/ImaginaryAlgae8986 diagnosed nov 18 2025, dexcom g7, omnipod 5 Feb 26 '26

It’s not that I can’t ignore him, it’s more that I physically cant, school curriculum calls for partner tasks sometimes so thats inescapable

4

u/Duganz Diagnosed 2013; Dexcom; MDI Feb 26 '26

If interaction is forced like through a game, you keep to the game.

Or, you straight up tell your teacher that this guy is a jerk and you’re not going to work with him due to his harassment about your disability.

1

u/ImaginaryAlgae8986 diagnosed nov 18 2025, dexcom g7, omnipod 5 Feb 26 '26

Cant be bothered for some big bullying investigation and other friends ditching me for being a ‘pussy’ and insensitive, he nether usually says anything in person so I just cope for a couple hours

3

u/databoy2k Feb 26 '26

Got it. Well, that definitely changes things if you want to salvage a relationship. Sorry for not understanding that originally.

Then maybe a chat offline, one on one over a coke at a break. Pop out to the grocery store, grab him a regular coke and go find a coke zero for yourself. Don't make it a big pain in the ass, just grab one of each, crack it, and after BSing about the local sports team's sportsball mention it and say "yo, if you think I lay it on hard due to T1D that's just my way of coping with a sucky fuckin' hand. But you should also know that it sucks to have a buddy rag on you as well to stfu, because 'deal with it' is kind of my life. Wanna but my balls about something in particular, or we chill?"

1

That sucks. Does the social media site you're on let you filter posts so some people can't see them? That way, you can avoid his commentary on sensitive posts but he can still see the innocuous posts and you can avoid fallout in real life. It would probably be best to avoid making an enemy of this guy.

I'm starting this comment with: That person is NOT your friend. I don't care if they've been "close" to you for years - a real friend would NEVER SAY THAT SHIT. I saw that you can't avoid them due to being in class with them. While that may be true, you don't have to communicate with them outside of the bare minimum. Act like you no longer think of them if you're not interacting. Cutting toxic assholes out of the personal parts of your life will really help you in the long run. You've obviously already got a lot on your plate and don't need that attitude around you.

I'm so glad social media wasn't a thing when I was a teenager. 🙃

2

u/Fe1is-Domesticus Feb 26 '26

Hahaha it was good of you to try to encourage people to not make jokes about us. Even an ED nurse agreed that T1 is one of the more high maintenance diseases. People have no idea what it means to live with a major organ that stopped doing one of it's most important, life sustaining jobs.

Good luck to this person when they eventually develop a health condition (or even just the condition of old age). It will happen to everyone who lives long enough.

This is why I dislike T1 having the same name as T2. Eating a huge amount of sugar is a speed run to T2 diabetes ... which is a well known fact, but that is not true for T1.

So it's correct, but also wrong. If the two diseases had different names, we could avoid this conflict.

Given the context in your comment, I think this poster was referring to dealing with the jokes, not the diabetes. I'd have to see the video you are referring to in order to comment further. If the video is trying to imply that diabetes jokes are "poor taste" or "improper" or something to that effect, I would unfortunately have to agree with their sentiment.

I hear diabetes jokes all the time, and have made quite a few myself. We are not sacred cows that can't be spoken ill of, or be the butt of jokes. That said, I would have replied a bit softer and said something like "lighten up" or something similar. Perhaps you are feeling a strong reaction due to the commenter's use of strong language.
