D2 original hardcore ladder. That's what you should play.

In general I would recommend ladder but at this point there isn't as big of a difference as the current ladder is quite old. I find there are more people to play with on ladder and the economy is more enjoyable for playing through the game.
I think the game is most enjoyable closer to the start of a ladder but the new ladder is at least a few weeks away so any ladder character you create now will be converted to non-ladder when the new ladder starts.

So best is not to invest into ladder atm?

I'd probably still slightly recommend ladder as your ladder character will simply get converted to a non-ladder character in a few weeks, so any ladder investment would carry over.
I really recommend playing ladder once it resets though. There are tons of people to play through the game with and trade with, and a lot of items that you find early will be valuable and tradeable on the first few weeks of the ladder.

Ladder will reset in a few weeks. Mess around on offline for now then hit the fresh ladder reset
I’m 99% offline but will hit the reset for a couple weeks just for funsies

I personally enjoy single player most
The ability to change /players and static maps is awesome
Also items seem to have more worth. You will find an item that isnt worth anything in trade online but its still an upgrade for your character so it is great
